Why does my dog beg for food?
Begging can persist when it has paid off before. If scraps sometimes arrive after a dog begs, the dog can learn that asking at the table is worth trying. A consistent rule across the household—and with guests—is therefore important. The American Kennel Club’s guidance on table begging recommends managing the behavior and teaching the dog what to do instead.
Begging should not automatically be treated as a training problem, however. If your dog’s eating pattern changes or it persistently ignores its regular food, consult a veterinarian.
How do I teach my dog to go to its bed while we eat?
Teach a “place,” “bed,” or “mat” cue outside mealtimes, when the table is not competing for your dog’s attention. Choose a comfortable spot at a manageable distance from the table. Build the behavior gradually, rewarding your dog for going to the spot and settling there before asking for longer stays or more distance.

- Set up the spot. Use a bed, blanket, or mat in a comfortable area. Start close enough that your dog can succeed.
- Reward the first steps. Cue your dog toward the spot and reward approaching it, then settling on it.
- Increase the challenge gradually. Ask for a little more time settled before rewarding. Add distance or distractions only as your dog manages the current step.
- Keep the place positive. Make it a comfortable, rewarding destination; don’t send your dog there as punishment. VCA’s place-training guidance recommends making the spot a happy place.
What should I do during meals?
While your dog is learning, prevent access to table food in whichever way your household can use consistently. You can use a gate, have your dog relax in another room, or cue the practiced “place” away from the table. A comfortable barrier or separate room is management—not punishment—when the dog has a safe, suitable place to settle.
If your dog stays on its bed or mat, reward calm settling there rather than handing food over at the table. A suitable toy can also help occupy the dog; VCA suggests a special toy or one containing part of the dog’s dinner. Keep any food used for the activity within the dog’s normal daily food allowance.

Should I ignore my dog when it begs?
Don’t feed your dog in response to begging. Avoid scolding, too: attention can still make the behavior worthwhile. When practical, cue or reward the alternative you have taught, such as settling on the mat. Ask everyone who feeds or visits the dog to follow the same no-table-food rule, so begging does not pay off intermittently.
Is it okay to give my dog treats while training?
Yes, but treats are optional, and training rewards should fit into your dog’s daily food plan. For simple practice, try using part of the dog’s regular ration. If you use treats or snacks, VCA Animal Hospitals, with Canadian Academy of Veterinary Nutrition contributors, says a maximum of 10% of a dog’s daily calories should come from treats and snacks, with 90% from its main food. When does begging require professional help?
Growling, snapping, or other aggression around food is a safety concern, not a reason to try a bowl-related training procedure on your own. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) advises against carrying out its food-bowl procedure without professional coaching and supervision when aggression is present. Contact a qualified behavior professional; AVSAB names a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist or a board-certified veterinary behaviorist as options in its guidance on preventing food guarding.
For training more broadly, AVSAB’s 2021 position statement says there is no evidence that aversive training is necessary for dog training or behavior modification. Its humane dog-training position statement supports choosing reward-based methods rather than punishment.
