Freshwater fish live in inland waters such as rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds. Examples include bass, perch, bluegill, catfish, trout, and carp, as well as aquarium-associated fish such as bettas, guppies, and goldfish. “Freshwater” describes habitat, not aquarium suitability: each species has its own needs, and some fish migrate between fresh and salt water.

What counts as freshwater?

Freshwater fish inhabit inland waters, including rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds. Conditions and fish communities vary from place to place: NOAA, for example, describes trout in highland streams and catfish near the bottom of slower waters.

Not every freshwater-associated fish stays in freshwater for its whole life. NOAA describes salmon and sturgeon that begin life in freshwater, grow in the ocean, and return to freshwater to spawn.

Examples of freshwater fish

These examples illustrate the variety of fish associated with freshwater habitats. They are not an exhaustive list, and inclusion here does not mean a fish is suitable for a home aquarium.

River and stream fish

  • Trout—A familiar example associated with highland streams, according to NOAA.
  • Catfish—NOAA notes that catfish may be found near the bottom of slower waters.
  • Bass—A familiar freshwater fish named by NOAA in its river habitat discussion.
  • Perch—Another example NOAA names in its discussion of river habitats.
  • Bluegill—A freshwater fish NOAA includes among its examples.
  • Salmon—Some salmon begin life in freshwater, grow in the ocean, and return to freshwater to spawn.

Lake and pond fish

  • Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides)—FishBase reports it from lakes, ponds, swamps, creeks, and rivers.
  • Common carp (Cyprinus carpio)—USGS reports it from lakes, ponds, and lower sections of rivers.
  • Goldfish (Carassius auratus)—A freshwater fish also kept in aquariums.
  • Guppy (Poecilia reticulata)—A freshwater fish often associated with home aquariums.
  • Betta (Betta splendens)—A freshwater fish kept in aquariums.

FishBase reported 36,535 fish species in its February 2026 statistics. That is the database’s total for fish species, not a count of freshwater species.

Freshwater fish for home aquariums

Bettas, guppies, and goldfish are examples of freshwater fish kept in home aquariums. A freshwater habitat label alone does not establish whether a fish is appropriate for a particular aquarium or compatible with other fish. Research the species’ setup, food, care, and environmental needs before choosing it.

  • COMPACT CANISTER FILTER WITH LARGE FILTER SURFACE – Designed with a small footprint, allowing it to be discreetly placed in tight spaces. Provides effective multi-stage filtration using mechanical and biological media, including 10 ppi coarse filter foams, 20 ppi fine filter foam, and ceramic media for improved water clarity.
  • BUILT-IN HEATER – Integrated heater minimizes in-tank equipment, while also protecting inhabitants from direct contact. Temperature controlled via bi-metal technology with a thermal shutoff for safety.
  • ADJUSTABLE FLOW & QUIET OPERATION – Flow rate can be customized at both inlet and outlet. Rubber feet help minimize vibration and noise for quieter, more stable operation.
  • NO-MESS MAINTENANCE – Integrated aquastop locking mechanisms on the inlet and outlet connections prevent water leaks during maintenance. The aquastop is detachable for easy movement of the filter without affecting the tubing setup.
  • RELIABLE & BACKED BY WARRANTY – Ideal for freshwater and saltwater aquariums up to 30 gallons (100L). Italian-made, German-engineered, UL certified, and includes a 3-year warranty.

CDC advises asking a veterinarian about proper aquarium setup, fish selection, food, care, and environmental requirements. Compatibility matters too: CDC notes that male bettas may fight if kept together. Do not assume that fish sold as aquarium species can share a tank or that one care setup fits every species.

Freshwater fish and their habitats

Freshwater habitats support a wide range of fish and other life. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) says freshwater ecosystems cover about 1 percent of Earth’s surface and provide habitat for over 40 percent (13,000) of the world’s freshwater fish species.

Fish communities differ among habitats, and some species use both freshwater and saltwater during their life cycle. Examples such as salmon and sturgeon show why it is important not to describe every freshwater-associated fish as confined to freshwater.

Do all freshwater fish stay in freshwater?

No. Some fish move between freshwater and saltwater as part of their life cycle. NOAA describes salmon and sturgeon that begin life in freshwater, grow in the ocean, and return to freshwater to spawn.
