Many cats become less able to digest lactose after weaning. Cow’s milk can cause diarrhea, vomiting, bloating, or abdominal discomfort, though cats do not all respond the same way. Adult cats do not need milk; water should be their everyday drink.
Many adult cats are less able to digest lactose after weaning
Many cats become less able to digest lactose as they mature. Kittens produce lactase, the enzyme that breaks down milk sugar, but this ability commonly declines after weaning. VCA Animal Hospitals says most kittens lose the ability to digest lactose by about 12 weeks of age; the timing and degree of tolerance vary.
That is why a cat may eagerly lap up milk and still develop digestive upset afterward. Cats may like milk, but enthusiasm is not proof that it agrees with their digestive system. Ordinary cow’s milk is unnecessary for adult cats and is generally not recommended as a treat. Cornell University’s Feline Health Center notes that many cats are lactose-intolerant and can develop gastrointestinal problems from milk.
Why milk can upset a cat’s stomach
Lactose is the natural sugar in mammalian milk. Lactase is the enzyme that breaks lactose down. The ASPCA explains that cats do not possess significant amounts of lactase.

When a cat cannot digest the lactose in milk, digestive signs may follow. The response varies from cat to cat; a cat’s interest in milk does not show whether it can digest it.
What happens if a cat drinks milk?
After a cat drinks cow’s or goat’s milk, watch for digestive signs such as:
- loose stool or diarrhea;
- vomiting;
- bloating; and
- abdominal discomfort.
These signs can occur with lactose intolerance, but they do not prove that lactose caused them. VCA Animal Hospitals advises providing a veterinarian with a detailed food history, including what the cat ate and the timing and severity of symptoms.

Follow veterinary guidance for the kitten’s care.
As kittens mature and are weaned, their ability to digest lactose commonly declines. Do not use cow’s milk as a routine substitute for nursing or kitten milk replacer.
