The CDC advises that wildlife should not be kept as pets, and prairie dogs are wild animals with welfare, health, and legal considerations that require careful attention. Before acquiring one—or if you already care for one—consult a veterinarian experienced with prairie dogs and check current requirements with wildlife and local authorities.
Why the CDC advises against keeping wildlife as pets
The CDC says wildlife should never be kept as pets. Close contact with wildlife can injure people or animals, and wild animals can carry diseases that may affect people and pets. These general concerns apply to prairie dogs as wildlife; they do not establish that every individual animal is infected or dangerous.
Keeping a prairie dog also raises questions about whether its needs can be met in a home. The sources available here do not establish a prairie-dog-specific care plan for enclosure size, diet, companionship, or handling. General small-mammal guidance is not a substitute for advice from a qualified veterinarian.
Health risks: what is documented
A CDC-published investigation reported the first evidence of prairie-dog-to-human tularemia transmission in Texas in 2002. This documents a transmission event; it does not tell us how likely infection is from any particular prairie dog or provide a current prevalence estimate.

The CDC also warns more generally that wildlife can carry diseases harmful to people and pets. Avoid treating an animal’s appearance or behavior as proof that it is healthy. If you have concerns about an animal or a possible exposure, contact a veterinarian and an appropriate medical professional.
Is it legal to own a prairie dog?
There is no single answer that applies everywhere. Federal rules address importation, while state and local rules may separately govern possession, sale, transport, and other activities. Check current rules for your location and the activity you plan before acquiring or moving an animal.
| Rules to check | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Federal import rules | Whether the animal or its origin is subject to import restrictions. The CDC says a ban on importing African rodents remains in effect. |
| State or territory rules | Whether possession, sale, import, or transport is allowed and whether permits or other conditions apply. |
| Local rules | Whether county, municipal, or other local requirements apply to keeping or moving the animal. |
The history of federal restrictions should not be mistaken for a nationwide ownership rule. The CDC recounts that restrictions imposed in 2003 were rescinded by the FDA in 2008 for capture, sale, and interstate movement of prairie dogs or domestically bred African rodents. That history does not mean prairie dogs are legal to keep in every state or locality.

Before taking action:
- Identify the animal and its origin as clearly as possible.
- Contact the relevant state or territory wildlife agency to ask about current requirements for your planned activity.
- Check with local authorities about applicable animal-control or other local rules.
- If importing an animal into the United States, review the CDC’s current import guidance and restrictions.
- Ask a veterinarian experienced with prairie dogs about appropriate care and whether the animal can be examined.
General care considerations for someone already caring for a prairie dog
The CDC’s small-mammal guidance describes general considerations such as secure, lockable housing, fresh food and water, enrichment, and routine veterinary care. Those points are not a complete or prairie-dog-specific husbandry plan. Confirm any housing, diet, handling, or enrichment choices with a veterinarian experienced with prairie dogs.
If you already care for one, arrange veterinary advice rather than relying on generic small-pet guidance. You can also ask state wildlife or animal-control authorities about applicable legal requirements and responsible options if you can no longer provide care.
Never release a prairie dog outdoors
Do not release an unwanted pet into the wild. The CDC says pets should not be released outdoors. If you cannot continue caring for the animal, contact a veterinarian experienced with prairie dogs and ask appropriate wildlife or animal-control authorities about lawful, responsible options.
