Tilapia is a common and market name for multiple fishes in the cichlid family, Cichlidae—not one scientific species. Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is one species in this broader group.
Tilapia is a cichlid, not one species
ITIS and the FAO identify Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, as a species in the family Cichlidae. But “cichlid” is a broader family designation; it does not mean every cichlid is a tilapia.

The FDA Seafood List associates the acceptable market name “Tilapia” with several scientific names, including Oreochromis niloticus, O. aureus (Blue tilapia), O. mossambicus (Mozambique tilapia), and species in other genera. The list also includes hybrids. These are examples from the FDA list, not a complete worldwide count of fish called tilapia.
Nile tilapia is one example
Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a specific species within the broader group called tilapia. FAO’s 2009 species profile reports that several tilapia species are cultured commercially and describes Nile tilapia as the predominant cultured tilapia species worldwide. That is historical context from the 2009 profile, not a current production ranking.

Why the name matters
“Tilapia” is useful as a common or food-market name, but by itself it may not identify the exact species. The FDA Seafood List includes multiple scientific names and hybrids under market names that include “Tilapia” or “Tilapia or Red Tilapia.” When precision matters, use the scientific name—for example, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).
For fishkeeping, identify the exact species rather than relying on the broad label “tilapia.” The name alone does not tell you which fish a particular source or product means.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is tilapia one species?
No. Tilapia is a common and market name used for multiple fish taxa in the cichlid family. Nile tilapia is one species among them.
Is Nile tilapia the same as tilapia?
Nile tilapia is one particular tilapia species, Oreochromis niloticus. The broader name “tilapia” can refer to other species and hybrids as well.

Are all cichlids tilapia?
No. Tilapia are cichlids, but Cichlidae is a broader fish family; the family name does not make every cichlid a tilapia.
How can I tell which tilapia species a product is?
Look for a scientific name or a more specific common name, such as Nile tilapia or Blue tilapia. The broad market name alone may not identify the species.
