Choose a magnetic aquarium cleaner by tank material and measured pane thickness first; tank volume alone is not enough. Manufacturer specifications support different Mag-Float models for glass and acrylic across a range of thicknesses, and the Tunze Care Magnet nano for 6–10 mm glass. Best glass nano options: Mag-Float Nano and Tunze Care Magnet nano
“Nano” is not a common thickness standard. Mag-Float lists its glass Nano, item 00022, for small aquariums up to 30 gallons or glass up to 3/16 inch (5 mm). Tunze lists its Care Magnet nano, model 0220.010, for 6–10 mm glass. Measure the glass and compare it with the exact model specification rather than choosing by the product name or tank volume.
Tunze says the Care Magnet nano includes a replacement plastic blade and colored end caps; its blade width is 45 mm. Tunze also warns that adhering sand or dust can scratch glass and advises checking that the cleaner’s contact surfaces and the glass are free of contaminants before use.

Best acrylic route: choose a Mag-Float acrylic model
Mag-Float publishes a separate acrylic product lineup. Its acrylic Mini is listed for aquariums up to 10 gallons and panes up to 3/16 inch. Other acrylic models have their own thickness limits, so verify the exact model rather than assuming a glass-branded cleaner is suitable for acrylic.
Tunze expressly does not recommend using the Care Magnet on acrylic. Do not choose it for an acrylic aquarium; use a cleaner that its manufacturer specifically identifies for acrylic.
Options for thick glass or acrylic
Mag-Float lists separate glass and acrylic models for thicker panels. In both lineups, the listed ranges include X-Large models through 1 1/4 inch and Professional models for 1 1/2–2 inch surfaces. These are distinct model categories, not a general rating for every large cleaner.

Match the product line to the tank material, then verify the exact model’s thickness limit on the current manufacturer page. The available research supports compatibility claims, not a claim that any one thick-pane model performs better than another.

How to choose a magnetic aquarium cleaner
1. Identify the tank material
First determine whether the aquarium panel is glass or acrylic. Mag-Float lists distinct product lines for the two materials, and the specific model’s labeling matters. Tunze says its Care Magnet is not recommended for acrylic.
2. Measure the pane
Check the aquarium manufacturer’s specifications or measure the panel. A gallon recommendation is a secondary fit detail, not a substitute for the cleaner’s stated thickness range. For example, Mag-Float Nano is listed for up to 3/16 inch (5 mm) glass, while Tunze Care Magnet nano is listed for 6–10 mm glass.

3. Check the exact model and accessories
Confirm which cleaning surfaces or blades are included and whether replacement blades or felt strips are available for that model. Do not assume an attachment or replacement part fits every cleaner in a product lineup.
How to reduce scratch risk
Tunze cautions that particles such as adhering sand or dust can scratch aquarium glass. Before use, check the aquarium surface and both cleaner contact surfaces for contaminants. If grit is present, remove it before moving the cleaner across the pane.
