A southern flannel moth caterpillar looks soft, but its hairs conceal venomous spines that can break off in skin and cause intense burning pain. Its larva is commonly called the puss caterpillar. Leave suspected caterpillars alone, and contact poison control or a medical professional for eye exposure, worsening symptoms, or a severe reaction.

The hazard is the caterpillar, not the adult moth. The University of Florida IFAS Extension warns that puss caterpillars are often mistaken as safe to handle because of their soft, furry appearance.

What is a southern flannel moth caterpillar?

The southern flannel moth is Megalopyge opercularis, and the puss caterpillar is its larval stage. The larva is stout-bodied and covered with gray or brown hairs; dense hairs can conceal its head. Venomous spines beneath the soft-looking hairs may break off and embed in skin. [c001][c004]

Why its appearance is deceptive

The fur-like covering can make the caterpillar seem harmless, but touching it may press concealed spines into the skin. Do not pick one up, brush against it, or handle it to identify it. A photograph taken from a safe distance may help an extension office or qualified entomologist identify it.

Not every fuzzy caterpillar is venomous, and a casual photograph may not be enough to distinguish similar-looking species. The safe choice is to leave unfamiliar hairy or spiny caterpillars alone.

Where people encounter them

Southern flannel moth caterpillars feed on multiple broadleaf plants. Oaks and citrus are commonly associated host plants; oaks and elms are also listed by UF/IFAS. These are examples, not an exhaustive list or a guarantee of where a caterpillar will occur. [c001][c004]

People may encounter them while working around foliage or reaching into shrubs. Avoid touching suspected caterpillars and do not brush one off with a bare hand. If one is on clothing or skin, North Carolina Poison Control advises using a stiff object rather than a hand to move it away. [c003]

What a sting can feel like

Contact can cause immediate, intense burning pain. UF/IFAS reports that a red, grid-like mark matching the venomous spines may appear, followed by swelling. [c002]

Broader symptoms are possible, but they are not inevitable. UF/IFAS lists possible systemic effects including headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, low blood pressure, and seizures. Do not assume every sting will cause these symptoms. [c002]

How to avoid contact

  1. Do not pick up or handle a suspected puss caterpillar. Do not brush it away with your bare hand.
  2. Keep children from touching caterpillars. Explain that a soft, furry appearance does not mean an animal is safe to handle.
  3. Look without touching. If identification is needed, take a photograph from a safe distance and ask a local extension office or qualified entomologist.
  4. Get local advice about recurring sightings. Contact a local extension office or qualified pest-management professional rather than handling the caterpillar yourself.

First aid after touching one

For a skin sting, North Carolina Poison Control recommends gently placing tape over the affected area and lifting it to remove hairs or spine tips. Use a fresh piece of tape for each pass, then wash the area thoroughly with warm, soapy water. [c003]

  1. Move any caterpillar away without using your hand. Use a stiff object or another barrier.
  2. Use tape gently. Place it over the affected skin and lift it away; repeat with fresh tape.
  3. Wash the area. Wash thoroughly with warm, soapy water.
  4. Consider an ice pack. UF/IFAS lists ice packs among measures that may help in some cases. Follow poison-control or medical guidance for your situation. [c002]

Adhesive tape for first aid can be useful for the tape-removal step. Tape is not protective equipment and is not a reason to handle a caterpillar.

When to get medical or poison-control advice

Contact poison control or a medical professional for eye exposure, symptoms that worsen, or a severe reaction. For eye exposure, North Carolina Poison Control advises rinsing thoroughly with room-temperature water and calling poison control. [c003]

In the United States, the cited poison-control resources provide the Poison Help number 1-800-222-1222. Follow current local instructions and contact details. [c003][c004][c005]

What not to do

  • Do not touch or brush off the caterpillar with a bare hand.
  • Do not rub the sting. Use tape gently to lift hairs or spine tips, then wash.
  • Do not assume every fuzzy caterpillar is venomous. Avoid touching unfamiliar hairy or spiny caterpillars rather than making an unsupported identification.
  • Do not treat tape as a cure. Seek poison-control or medical advice for eye exposure, worsening symptoms, or a severe reaction.

A practical rule for yards and trails

Look, but do not touch. Keep children away from suspected puss caterpillars, avoid reaching through foliage without checking, and ask a local expert for help if identification is needed. The concealed spines—not aggressive behavior—are the reason accidental contact can be painful.
