Wildlife trips can bring you close to animals through guided safaris, forest treks, boat outings, and birdwatching—but “close” should mean a good view, not touching or disturbing wildlife. Choose a destination by the animals and habitat you hope to see, and treat every sighting as a possibility rather than a promise.

The destinations below are independently sourced examples, not a definitive ranking or a confirmed original list of 14. Trip offerings, seasons, access, and permits can change, so verify current details with the destination or operator before booking.

Choose the kind of wildlife encounter you want

Safari drives and open landscapes

For large mammals, consider a safari format in South Africa, Kenya, or Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Falstaff describes Shambala Private Game Reserve in South Africa as a place to look for lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo. Africa Inscribed describes guided itineraries that can include game drives and mokoro outings in the Okavango. These are descriptions of potential experiences, not guarantees of seeing particular animals.

Rainforest wildlife and birdwatching

The Peruvian Amazon offers a different trip style: rainforest habitat, boat outings, and birdwatching. Falstaff highlights Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica on the Madre de Dios River and reports more than 500 bird species recorded on the hotel grounds in 2022. That is the publication’s reported figure, not an independently checked inventory.

Bird colonies and native birds

Inagua in the Bahamas is highlighted for flamingos and native birds. Falstaff’s 2022 feature reported 80,000 West Indian flamingos and described the island as home to their largest breeding colony. Treat that number as the feature’s historical report, not a current population estimate, and look for current local conservation information before relying on it.

How to plan a responsible wildlife trip

  1. Choose the experience first: a game drive, guided trek, boat outing, or birdwatching trip.
  2. Identify the exact reserve, preserve, lodge, or visitor site rather than relying on a country or region name alone.
  3. Ask the destination or operator about current dates, availability, permits, fees, access, and any health or safety requirements.
  4. Ask how the trip handles animal distance, group behavior, and cancellations when conditions are unsuitable.
  5. Do not expect to touch, feed, bait, chase, or call wild animals. Follow the guide’s instructions and leave wildlife room to behave naturally.
  6. Bring binoculars if useful for the activity; they can improve a distant view without requiring you to approach.
