She told the Associated Press that she feared for her children after her son spotted the animal near their home. The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) confirmed the last missing macaque was recovered on Nov. 6; AP later reported that it was relocated to a New Jersey refuge.
What happened in Mississippi?
On Oct. 28, 2025, a truck carrying 21 rhesus macaques overturned on Interstate 59 north of Heidelberg, Mississippi. MDWFP said eight escaped and five of those animals were recovered at the crash site.
On Nov. 2, Ferguson told the Associated Press that her 16-year-old son spotted a monkey in the yard near their home. She said she went outside with a firearm and phone, saw the animal about 60 feet away, and shot it because she feared for her children. These details are her account as reported by AP.
MDWFP said on Nov. 4 that two of the three macaques then unaccounted for had been recovered deceased and one remained missing. The department confirmed on Nov. 6 that the final macaque had been recovered after a resident reported its location.

The escaped monkey was not confirmed to have attacked a person
Ferguson said she feared for her children after her son saw the macaque near their home. The available reporting does not establish that the animal physically attacked anyone. It is more accurate to describe this as a resident shooting an escaped macaque after it appeared near her home.
What did officials say about the monkeys’ health?
Early public warnings relayed claims from people involved in the transport that the macaques were aggressive and had diseases. Those claims should not be presented as confirmed facts.
Tulane National Biomedical Research Center said the macaques were not owned, transported, or in its custody at the time of the crash. Tulane also said the animals had recent checkups and were pathogen-free, and that it sent animal-care experts to assist.

Who owned and transported the monkeys?
Tulane National Biomedical Research Center said it did not own or transport the macaques and did not have them in its custody at the time of the crash. It said the animals had been provided to other research organizations and that it sent animal-care experts to help after the incident.
Mississippi Free Press reported that the state veterinarian said the animals had the documents and certificate of veterinary inspection required for legal interstate transport. The sources reviewed do not establish a final determination about the crash cause.
