What Is a Therapy Cat and What Do They Do?

A therapy cat visits people with a handler through an animal-assisted program, offering possible companionship and social interaction. Visits depend on the cat's welfare and the host facility's rules; therapy status does not grant general public access.

A therapy cat visits people with a handler as part of an animal-assisted activity or service. Visits may offer companionship and social interaction in settings such as care facilities, schools, and community programs. Clinical animal-assisted therapy is different: it is a goal-directed treatment process led by a credentialed therapist, and the cat does not provide treatment independently.

What does a therapy cat do?

During an organized visit, people may spend time near or gently pet a cat. The interaction can offer companionship, social interaction, or a calmer opportunity to connect. These are possible benefits, not guaranteed clinical effects.

Therapy cats may visit hospitals and other healthcare facilities, assisted-living communities, and schools. Whether a cat can visit a particular room, unit, resident, or patient depends on the program, facility policy, and individual circumstances.

Animal-assisted activities versus animal-assisted therapy

The CDC distinguishes animal-assisted activities (AAA) from animal-assisted therapy (AAT). Activities are programs intended to enhance quality of life and may involve group or individual visits. AAT is a goal-directed intervention incorporated into a credentialed therapist’s treatment process. Not every therapy-animal visit is clinical therapy.

Therapy cat versus service animal

Role Purpose Access
Therapy cat Visits people with a handler through a program or animal-assisted service. Depends on program and facility permission; registration or evaluation does not grant general public-access rights.
Animal-assisted therapy A goal-directed treatment process led by a credentialed therapist, with an animal incorporated into the plan. Depends on the treatment setting and facility policy.
Service animal An individually trained animal that performs work or tasks for a person with a disability. Has a distinct access framework. A therapy cat does not acquire service-animal access rights through registration.

Rules vary by jurisdiction. Do not assume that a therapy cat may enter a public place simply because it has been evaluated or registered by a therapy-animal organization.

What makes a suitable therapy cat?

Temperament and individual suitability matter more than breed or appearance. Pet Partners describes a potential therapy cat as sociable, easygoing, and interested in new experiences. A friendly cat at home may still find travel, unfamiliar people, or a busy setting stressful.

IAHAIO recommends veterinary health assessment, relevant screening and preventive care, and behavior assessment and monitoring. Its guidance recommends cats be at least 12 months old; this is guidance, not a universal legal requirement. Program requirements can differ.

The cat should willingly engage, not merely tolerate contact. IAHAIO recommends that interactions not be forced, that cats be able to retreat, and that interaction time suit the animal’s capacity. Handlers should watch for signs of stress and adjust or end a visit when needed.

How to prepare for therapy-cat visits

  1. Check suitability with a veterinarian. Ask whether the cat is healthy enough for visits and what screening or preventive care is appropriate. Follow the program and facility’s health requirements.
  2. Prepare for transport and unfamiliar settings. Use gradual, reward-based practice with travel and new environments. A cat carrier may help with transport, but it is not a requirement or proof that a cat is suitable. Do not proceed if the cat remains stressed after arrival.
  3. Learn to read the cat’s behavior. The handler should recognize when the cat wants distance or a retreat, rather than interpreting quietness as comfort.
  4. Complete training and evaluation appropriate to the role. Requirements depend on the program. IAHAIO recommends handler training that matches the handler’s role; its guidance describes a minimum of 70 hours for volunteers delivering animal-assisted activities. This is a guideline recommendation, not a universal legal requirement.
  5. Confirm the visit with the host facility. Ask about its rules, orientation, health screening, infection-control measures, and any restrictions for particular people or rooms.

Pet Partners is one example of an organization that evaluates and registers cats for therapy-animal work. Check its current requirements and whether the intended facility accepts the program. Registration does not provide general public access.

Health, hygiene, and facility rules

Healthcare visits require infection-control planning and attention to the needs of individual patients. The CDC recommends that facilities involve infection-control staff in program planning, consider animal health and behavior, and use hand hygiene after contact. Allergies, asthma, immunosuppression, hygiene, and facility policy can affect whether a visit is suitable.

The CDC reports an American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology estimate that approximately 15% of the population has dog or cat allergies. This is not a therapy-cat-specific figure. Facility policy and an individual’s care situation should guide decisions about visits.

FAQ

Where can a therapy cat visit?

Examples include healthcare facilities, assisted-living communities, and schools. The program and facility determine whether visits are allowed in a specific room or for a particular person.

Can therapy cats go anywhere?

No. Therapy-animal registration or evaluation does not grant general public-access rights. A facility or event host must permit the visit.

Can any friendly cat become a therapy cat?

No. Suitability depends on the individual cat’s health, behavior, comfort with new experiences, and willingness to interact. Affection at home alone does not establish that a cat will enjoy visits.
