The owner of the famous Doge dog, Kabosu, was Atsuko Sato, who adopted her from an animal welfare organization. Another well-known Shiba Inu, Maru (Marutaro), was owned by Shinjiro Ono. There is no verified ranking of the “top” Shiba Inu owners, and the available research does not establish ten owners to the same standard.
Here are the best-documented owner-and-dog stories, along with what the available sources do—and do not—confirm about other famous Shiba Inu profiles.
Who owned the Doge dog?
Atsuko Sato adopted Kabosu after the breeder went out of business and the dog was taken to an animal welfare center. Sato told Know Your Meme in 2020 that she adopted Kabosu 16 days after she arrived at the center; Kabosu already had the name given to her by a rescue volunteer.
Sato shared a photograph of Kabosu in 2010. The image became the Doge meme in 2013, and Kabosu’s image became the emblem of Dogecoin that year. These are parts of the dog’s cultural history, not investment advice. The Associated Press and ABC News reported that Kabosu died in May 2024, aged 18.

Who owned Maru (Marutaro)?
Shinjiro Ono owned Maru, also known as Marutaro, and shared photos documenting the dog’s life. In a 2019 profile, Yle reported Ono’s explanation that Maru’s cheerful images were intended to make people smile after Japan’s March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Later reporting says Maru died in January 2024, aged 16.
Maru’s account is a long-running record of a particular dog, rather than a single image that became a meme. TIME reported a follower count in 2015; treat that as historical, not as a current measure of the account’s reach.

What is known about Bodhi and Suki?
Bodhi, known as Menswear Dog, is described in a 2026 Shiba roundup as a Shiba mix whose fashion-focused account led to modeling work and a coffee-table book. The research reviewed for this article did not adequately corroborate the owners’ names, so they are not named here.
The same roundup describes Suki as a Canadian Shiba known for outdoor travel imagery. It did not establish Suki’s owner’s name to the standard needed to identify that person as a fact. The roundup is a discovery source, and finer biographical details should be confirmed before publication.

Why isn’t this a top 10 ranking?
The sources reviewed identify notable dogs and some owners, but they do not provide a consistent measure of fame or enough verified owner identities for a reliable ten-person ranking. Cultural reach, ongoing documentation, and strength of owner identification are different criteria; ordering people by them would suggest a precision the evidence does not support.
For the strongest documented examples, the distinction is clear: Sato adopted and photographed Kabosu, whose image became Doge; Ono documented Maru’s life and shared cheerful images with an audience. Other famous-dog stories may be worth exploring, but an owner’s name should not be presented as fact without reliable confirmation.
