An umbilical hernia is a bulge at a dog’s navel caused by an opening in the abdominal wall that did not fully close after birth. Some small hernias may close as a puppy grows, but a veterinarian should examine any new navel-area swelling to assess its contents and advise whether monitoring or surgery is appropriate. Pain or warmth around the bulge, poor appetite, vomiting, or tiredness warrants prompt veterinary attention.
Do not try to push, tape, bind, puncture, or massage the swelling. A veterinarian should assess it, especially if it is painful, warm, changing, or fixed in place.
What is an umbilical hernia in a dog?
Before birth, the umbilical opening in the abdominal wall allows blood vessels to pass through. After birth, this ring should close. If it does not close completely, abdominal lining or fat can bulge beneath the skin at the navel; sometimes an abdominal organ can protrude through the opening.
Umbilical hernias are usually painless. The exact incidence and cause are unknown, although family-line patterns suggest a genetic predisposition may play a role. An individual puppy’s cause cannot be determined from the lump alone.

What does an umbilical hernia look like?
It often appears as a soft swelling under the skin at or near the navel. It may be more noticeable when a puppy stands, barks, cries, or strains. A hernia may be reducible or non-reducible, but owners should not test this by pushing on it. A veterinarian should assess the swelling and determine whether tissue may be trapped.
When is an umbilical hernia urgent?
Pain or warmth around the bulge, not eating, vomiting, or tiredness can signal a complication. If tissue becomes trapped and its blood supply is cut off, the condition is an emergency and immediate surgery may be needed.

How a veterinarian diagnoses an umbilical hernia
A veterinary examination is the usual starting point. The veterinarian examines the abdomen and navel area and assesses the swelling. X-rays or ultrasound may be recommended when the veterinarian needs to determine whether abdominal contents are trapped. Imaging is not automatically required in every case.

Can an umbilical hernia close on its own?
Some small defects may close as a puppy grows. VCA Animal Hospitals says hernias smaller than approximately 1 cm may close spontaneously by 3 to 4 months of age. This is a possibility, not a guarantee for an individual puppy.
A veterinarian can advise whether monitoring is appropriate and when the puppy should be rechecked. Do not assume that a painless swelling will close without veterinary assessment.

When does a dog need surgery?
Persistent hernias may need surgical repair, particularly when an abdominal organ protrudes. The veterinarian determines the appropriate plan based on the examination and whether contents may be trapped. Some repairs can be done at the same time as spaying or neutering when the timing is appropriate.
In a repair, the veterinarian closes the defect with sutures; the precise procedure depends on the hernia and the dog’s condition. The veterinary team should explain the plan and provide case-specific postoperative instructions. VCA reports an excellent prognosis after surgical correction.
