For most Silken Windhounds, start with a gentle weekly brush-through and check the feathering and friction areas for knots. Brush more often if your dog’s coat tangles readily. Work out small tangles and burrs before bathing, and get professional help rather than pulling at a tight or painful mat.
What makes a Silken Windhound’s coat prone to tangles?
The breed standard describes the coat as soft and silky, and allows it to be straight, slightly wavy, or curly. Longer feathering grows along the backs of the forelegs, brisket, hindquarters, neck, and tail. Those longer areas deserve a close check during grooming, though individual coats vary. The breed standard calls for a natural coat with minimal trimming. Silken Windhound Club Europe reproduces the International Silken Windhound Society standard’s description: “The coat is soft, and silky in texture.” The United Kennel Club standard says the breed is shown in a natural coat with minimal trimming.
How often should you brush a Silken Windhound?
Use a weekly brush-through as a practical baseline, then adjust to what you find. The Royal Kennel Club breed profile lists grooming once a week. Vetstreet’s breed-care profile, published in 2011, recommends brushing a few times a week. These are compatible starting points, not a single required schedule: a coat that stays clear may need less frequent brushing than one that knots between sessions.
Where to check for knots and what brush to use
Before brushing, look through the feathering and areas where hair rubs or catches debris. Check behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar or harness, and around the tail, as well as the longer coat on the brisket and hindquarters. Not every Silken Windhound will tangle in the same spots.

Vetstreet names a slicker brush for routine brushing. Use light, patient strokes and pause if you meet resistance; yanking can hurt your dog or worsen a knot. VCA Animal Hospitals advises: “Whatever brush you choose, it is important to be gentle when using it and to avoid excessive pulling on tangles.” If you are unsure which tool suits your dog’s coat, ask a veterinarian, breeder, or groomer for advice.
How to brush out tangles and burrs safely
- Inspect first. Part the coat with your fingers and find small knots or burrs before starting a brush-through.
- Work gently. Use a slicker brush or an appropriate comb with light strokes. Do not yank or force a tool through a knot.
- Stop when a mat resists. If it is tight, extensive, painful, or the skin beneath it looks irritated, do not keep pulling; contact a professional groomer or veterinarian.
- Brush before bathing. Remove tangles and burrs you can safely work out before the coat gets wet. Vetstreet suggests bathing every eight to twelve weeks, but that is one source’s general breed-care recommendation, not a universal schedule for every dog.
When a mat needs professional help
A small, loose tangle may come out with careful brushing or combing. A stubborn or extensive mat is different: pulling can cause pain, and the skin may be caught within it. If the mat is close to the skin, your dog reacts painfully, or you see redness or irritation, stop and consult a groomer or veterinarian.
