Animals can look blue for different reasons: microscopic structures can reflect blue light, some species produce blue pigment, and a blue-gray body can look lighter underwater. A blue appearance does not automatically mean an animal is rare. The verified examples here show how seasonal color, island endemism, and ocean scale each shape what “elusive” means.
Why are some animals blue?
Blue appearance does not have one universal cause. Smithsonian explains that microscopic structures can reflect blue light, creating color without blue pigment. The blue mandarin fish is a notable exception: Smithsonian describes it as one of only two known vertebrate species that produce blue through pigment.
Underwater light also affects how animals appear. NOAA explains that ocean animals’ coloration patterns vary with depth, with camouflage a likely reason for those patterns. A blue whale, for example, has a mottled blue-gray body that appears light blue underwater; that is different from a bright blue marking or a structural color.

Blue whale: an ocean giant that appears light blue underwater
The blue whale is the largest animal on Earth. NOAA reports that it can reach up to 110 feet long and 330,000 pounds. Its body is mottled blue-gray and looks light blue underwater; it feeds almost exclusively on krill.

NOAA says blue whales occur in all oceans except the Arctic. A broad ocean range does not make an encounter easy: these animals inhabit an immense, changing environment. NOAA lists the species as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and protected throughout its range under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Named current threats include vessel strikes and entanglement in fishing gear.
If you encounter a blue whale while viewing wildlife, follow NOAA’s guidance: stay at least 100 yards away and limit observation to 30 minutes or less.

Grand Cayman blue iguana: an island endemic with seasonal color
The Grand Cayman blue iguana occurs only on Grand Cayman, according to the Smithsonian National Zoo. Its skin ranges from dusky blue to gray and can become brighter blue during mating season. The color also helps it blend among rocks and scrub. It is primarily herbivorous.
Smithsonian describes threats that include feral predators and habitat conversion, and records the species as endangered following a 2012 IUCN reassessment. Island endemism means the species’ natural range is limited to that island; endemism alone should not be treated as proof of a particular conservation status.

Fiji banded iguana: blue stripes on a mostly green animal
The Fiji banded iguana is found only on Fiji islands. It is primarily green: males may have blue or light-green stripes, while females are usually green and may have pale blue spots. It is a useful reminder that a “blue animal” may have blue markings rather than an entirely blue body.
The Smithsonian National Zoo reports an estimated population decline of 50% over 35–40 years. That estimate is not a current census; it should be understood as an institutional estimate with the timeframe Smithsonian provides.

Seeing blue wildlife responsibly
Admire wildlife without touching, collecting, or disturbing it. For whale encounters, follow NOAA’s minimum distance of 100 yards and maximum observation time of 30 minutes or less. For island iguanas, respect habitat and keep wildlife in the wild; restricted ranges make disturbance and habitat change especially important concerns.
