A healthy weight is individual: a scale tells you how much your dog weighs, while a body condition score (BCS) helps assess body fat and shape. Look at your dog from above and from the side, then gently feel the ribs; a dog near ideal condition generally has a visible waist, an abdominal tuck, and ribs that are easy to feel beneath a thin covering. The veterinary team can help interpret weight and BCS together and set an appropriate target.
What a healthy-weight dog should look and feel like
A dog near ideal body condition generally has a waist behind the rib cage when viewed from above, an abdomen that tucks upward toward the hind legs when viewed from the side, and ribs that are easy to feel without excess fat covering. These clues are most useful when considered together. The WSAVA dog body-condition chart describes ideal condition on its 9-point scale as 4–5/9.
Body condition score: the numbers must include the scale
A BCS is a standardized assessment of body condition, not a weight measurement. Two scoring conventions used in veterinary guidance are:

How to check your dog’s body condition at home
1. Look at your dog from above
Have your dog stand naturally and look down from above. Check for a visible waist behind the rib cage.
2. Look at your dog from the side
View your dog standing from the side. Near ideal condition, the abdomen is tucked upward behind the rib cage rather than hanging down.
3. Feel the ribs gently
Gently feel over the rib cage. Near ideal condition, the ribs are palpable without excess fat covering and should not require heavy pressure to locate. Combine this check with your dog’s shape from above and the side rather than relying on one clue alone.

4. Record the score and scale
If you use a BCS chart, note both the score and the scale, such as 4/9 or 3/5. The same number can mean something different on different scales.
5. Track weight and condition together
Record your dog’s measured weight and BCS together. A weight trend alone does not show whether your dog has an appropriate amount of body fat. Ask your veterinary team to help interpret both and establish an individual target.
Why breed weight charts can give the wrong answer
A breed-weight figure is not a complete assessment of an individual dog. A body-condition score describes body fat and shape, while a scale measures weight; both are needed to help assess an appropriate target. Track weight trends, not just today’s number
Record weight and body condition over time, and share the information with your veterinary team. A scale can help track weight, but it cannot assess body fat or replace a body-condition check. For small dogs, VCA suggests using a home scale accurate to ounces; clinic weigh-ins are another option for following weight. See VCA’s guidance on checking whether a pet is overweight.
What to do if your dog appears overweight or too thin
Ask a veterinarian to assess your dog and help set a target before starting a weight-loss plan. Do not simply reduce the amount of the current food without veterinary guidance, because doing so could lead to micronutrient deficiencies. Provide a complete account of meals, treats, snacks, and other food your dog receives. VCA advises that treats and snacks comprise no more than 10% of a dog’s daily calorie intake.
