These are optional supports, not guaranteed treatments; severe or persistent fear calls for veterinary advice.
This is a category-based guide, not a firsthand review or a tested ranking. Veterinary sources support considering these aids as adjuncts, but do not establish that one works for every dog or is better than the others.
How to choose a calming aid
Start with the trigger and your dog’s comfort. A home diffuser may suit a consistent indoor space; a spray may suit a carrier or bedding; and sound masking or a food toy may help during a noise event if the dog can relax enough to use it.
| Aid | Situation it may suit | Format | Evidence and cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anxiety wrap or pressure vest, such as ThunderShirt | Situational stress when the dog accepts clothing | Wearable wrap | VCA says supporting efficacy data are limited. Acclimate during pleasant times and monitor comfort. |
| Dog-appeasing pheromone diffuser, such as Adaptil | Stress in a familiar indoor area | Room diffuser | An optional home adjunct, not an established cure. Place near the dog’s safe area as directed. |
| Pheromone spray | A carrier, bedding, or a particular resting area | Spray for surfaces | Follow label or veterinary directions; do not spray directly on the dog. |
| Lick mat or food-dispensing toy | Noise events or other situations when the dog remains able to eat | Food enrichment | May support enrichment or counterconditioning; do not force food if fear suppresses appetite. |
| White noise or music | Fireworks, storms, or other loud sounds | Speaker or sound device | Cornell recommends sound masking, but does not evaluate particular devices. |
| Wearable hearing protection, such as Mutt Muffs | Noise events, only if the dog comfortably tolerates the fit | Wearable ear protection | Veterinary guidance lists this option but does not establish efficacy for every dog. Introduce gradually and supervise. |
| L-theanine supplement, including products such as Composure | Mild fear, as an option to discuss with a veterinarian | Supplement | Not a guaranteed treatment. Ask a veterinarian about product choice, dose, health conditions, and interactions. |
| Alpha-casozepine supplement, such as Zylkene | Situational anxiety, as an option to discuss with a veterinarian | Supplement | Veterinary sources identify it as a possible adjunct; do not assume reliable efficacy or use without appropriate advice. |
What to know about each option
1. Anxiety wraps and pressure vests
VCA describes wraps such as ThunderShirt and Anxiety Wrap as garments that distribute pressure across the back and sides of the chest. Evidence confirming their effectiveness is limited, despite owner anecdotes. A wrap may be worth considering if your dog tolerates clothing, but stillness does not necessarily mean the dog feels better; it may be uncomfortable or inhibited.

Introduce the wrap during pleasant, calm periods, before a stressful event, and remove it afterward. Stop if your dog seems distressed or cannot move comfortably.
2. Dog-appeasing pheromone diffusers
A pheromone diffuser may be an optional adjunct when a dog’s stress occurs mainly in a familiar indoor area. VCA describes Adaptil as a common diffuser that can be placed near a dog’s safe area. Pheromone products are behavior modifiers, not established cures, so use one as part of a broader plan rather than expecting it to resolve anxiety on its own.
3. Pheromone sprays
A spray may fit a specific resting spot or travel setup better than a room diffuser. VCA identifies sprays as one pheromone format and advises applying them to surfaces such as blankets, towels, or carriers as directed—not directly to the pet. Check product directions and ask your veterinarian if you are unsure how to use it.

4. Lick mats and food-dispensing toys
A stuffed toy, lick mat, or long-lasting treat can provide enrichment during a storm or fireworks when the dog is still willing and able to eat. Cornell recommends these options for noise events. Food is not appropriate for every frightened dog: fear can suppress appetite, so do not force a toy or treat.
5. White noise and music
White noise or music may help mask loud sounds. Cornell recommends setting up a familiar room farthest from the noise, ideally with few or no windows. The sources do not evaluate specific machines or speakers, so choose a sound setup your dog tolerates and combine it with a freely accessible safe space.
6. Wearable hearing protection
VCA lists wearable hearing protection, including Mutt Muffs, among options for storms and fireworks. The available guidance does not show that it is effective or suitable for every dog. Introduce it gradually, supervise your dog, and do not force it if the fit or sensation causes distress.

7. L-theanine supplements
VCA names Composure, which contains L-theanine, as a product that may promote calm in mildly fearful dogs. This is not a guarantee and should not be treated as a substitute for care when fear is severe or persistent. Ask your veterinarian about the product, dose, your dog’s health conditions, and possible interactions.
8. Alpha-casozepine supplements
VCA names Zylkene, which contains alpha-casozepine, as a product that may help relax dogs with situational anxiety. This supports discussing the ingredient or product with a veterinarian, not assuming it will work reliably or using a dose without appropriate guidance.
How to prepare for storms or fireworks
- Set up a safe room. Choose a familiar space away from the noise. Use a crate only if your dog is already accustomed to it and treats it as a safe place.
- Mask sound and reduce exposure. Close windows and try white noise or music. Let your dog choose whether to use the space.
- Offer food enrichment only if appropriate. A lick mat or food toy may help if your dog is willing and able to eat. Do not force food.
- Introduce wearables ahead of time. Acclimate a wrap or hearing protection gradually in calm, pleasant circumstances and monitor your dog’s comfort.
- Ask for veterinary help if fear is unmanageable. A veterinarian can assess whether medication, behavior modification, or referral to a veterinary behaviorist is needed.
Are calming supplements and natural products safe?
“Natural” does not automatically mean safe. VCA notes that non-drug health products are not reviewed by the FDA for safety or effectiveness before sale and advises veterinary input. Therapeutic products may have side effects or interact with medication, so consult your veterinarian before giving a supplement and follow product directions.

When should you contact a veterinarian?
Contact a veterinarian if fear is severe, persistent, worsening, or unmanageable, or if your dog may be suffering. Cornell advises that extensive fear treatment may include medication and behavior modification; internet supplements should not replace a veterinary visit when your dog or household is suffering.
- Escalating or unmanageable fear: Ask about a treatment plan and whether referral to a veterinary behaviorist is appropriate.
- Distress during noise events: Sound masking and a safe room may not be enough for intense fear.
- Supplement questions: Get veterinary advice about product choice, dose, health conditions, and interactions.
FAQ
Do calming aids cure anxiety in dogs?
No. These products and setups are possible adjuncts, not guaranteed treatments. Persistent or severe fear may need veterinary evaluation, behavior modification, or medication.
Should I spray pheromone product directly on my dog?
No. VCA advises using pheromone sprays on surfaces such as bedding, towels, or carriers as directed, not directly on the pet.

Only if your dog is willing and able to eat. Fear can suppress appetite, so do not force food; a food toy is an optional enrichment aid, not a stand-alone treatment.
How do I introduce an anxiety wrap or hearing protection?
Introduce it gradually during calm, pleasant periods and supervise your dog. Stop if your dog seems uncomfortable, distressed, or restricted in movement.
When does noise fear need veterinary care?
Seek veterinary advice if the fear is unmanageable, severe, or persistent. A veterinarian can assess whether medication, behavior modification, or referral to a veterinary behaviorist is needed.
Bottom line: Match the aid to the situation and your dog’s comfort: consider a wrap, pheromone format, food enrichment, or sound management as appropriate. Use supplements only with veterinary guidance, and do not let any calming aid delay care for severe or persistent fear.
