There is no single ruling across all Islamic legal interpretations: the answer depends on the school or authority you follow. Some authorities permit seafood broadly, Hanafi guidance distinguishes fish from other sea animals, and the cited Ja’fari authority conditions fish permissibility on scales. Because fish and seafood are not interchangeable categories in every ruling, check disputed species with the authority you follow.

Fish and seafood are not always the same category

In everyday language, seafood can mean fish as well as shrimp, prawns, crab, and other sea animals. The cited Hanafi guidance permits fish but excludes other sea animals, while MUIS summarizes Shafi’i, Maliki, and Hanbali views as permitting seafood broadly.

That difference matters when a menu or package uses a broad label such as “seafood” or “shellfish.” Identify the actual animal and apply the guidance of the school or authority you follow; a ruling about one species does not establish a ruling for every sea animal.

What the cited authorities say

Broad seafood permissibility

Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta states that seafood is permissible except what is specifically prohibited by a text or proved harmful. It presents this as its ruling, not as a single position shared by every Islamic legal authority. MUIS likewise summarizes Shafi’i, Maliki, and Hanbali views as permitting all kinds of seafood, including when dead, and notes that some Hanafi scholars consider only fish halal.

Hanafi guidance

The cited Hanafi sources distinguish fish from other sea animals. Darul Uloom Deoband says fish are lawful and that shark or stingray is lawful if it is classified as fish; it says crab is not lawful under its answer. Its response describes disagreement among Hanafi scholars about prawns depending on whether they classify them as fish, and recommends leaving them while saying a person who eats them should not be objected to.

A separate Hanafi fatwa from Darulifta Ahlesunnat says fish are halal except fish that die naturally in the water without an apparent cause and float upside down to the surface. These are specific answers from the cited authorities; do not treat one response as a universal ruling for every Hanafi scholar.

The cited Ja’fari ruling on scales

The official site of Grand Ayatollah Muhammad Hussain Najafi states that fish with scales are halal and fish without scales are haram. This is the ruling of the authority cited here; it should not be presented as a universal Ja’fari consensus.

Examples where classification matters

Animal or category What the cited sources say Important limit
Fish The cited Hanafi sources permit fish, with a naturally dead, floating exception in the Darulifta Ahlesunnat fatwa. The cited Ja’fari authority requires scales. Apply the specific authority’s definition and conditions.
Shark or stingray The cited Deoband answer says each is halal if it is fish. The classification as fish is central to that answer.
Prawn The cited Deoband answer records Hanafi disagreement based on whether it counts as fish. Do not flatten this disputed classification into a universal Hanafi ruling.
Crab The cited Deoband answer says crab is not lawful under its Hanafi ruling. Other authorities may use a different approach to seafood.
Other sea animals MUIS summarizes Shafi’i, Maliki, and Hanbali views as permitting seafood broadly; the cited Hanafi summaries distinguish fish from other sea animals. The sources do not give an exhaustive cross-school ruling for every species.

How to decide what guidance applies

  1. Identify the animal. Find the actual species rather than relying on a broad menu or packaging term.
  2. Follow the authority relevant to you. The cited sources describe different approaches, not one universal list.
  3. Check classification and stated conditions. The cited answers make fish classification, scales, and—under one Hanafi fatwa—the circumstances of a fish’s death relevant.
  4. Ask about disputed cases. Give a qualified scholar or the authority you follow the species name and the details relevant to its ruling.

Are prawns halal?

The cited Deoband Hanafi answer records disagreement over whether prawns count as fish. It recommends leaving them, while saying a person who eats them should not be objected to. Consult the authority you follow for your own practice.

Are shark and stingray halal?

The cited Deoband answer says shark and stingray are halal if they are fish. The classification is part of the answer, so do not infer a ruling for every authority or species.

Are all seafood items halal?

No single answer applies across the cited sources. Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta and MUIS describe broad seafood permissibility in their respective guidance, while the cited Hanafi sources distinguish fish from other sea animals.

Does a ruling about one fish settle the status of every seafood product?

No. The cited authorities address religious classifications, not species identification, health testing, or product certification. For a packaged or prepared product, ask about its ingredients and any relevant preparation details as well as the species.
