The Belgian Malinois and Dutch Shepherd are among the closest commonly discussed comparisons to a German Shepherd, but resemblance varies with the dog’s build, coat, and individual features. Other sheepdogs and a few wolfdog or large shepherd types may share an upright-eared, athletic outline. A similar appearance does not establish ancestry or predict temperament, grooming, or care needs.
This is an editorial selection, not an official ranking or a scientifically verified list of the 17 closest matches. Consider each dog’s individual needs rather than choosing by appearance alone.
What makes a dog look like a German Shepherd?
People may see a resemblance when dogs share features such as erect ears, a shepherd-like outline, a dark facial mask, a double coat, or similar size. No single feature identifies a breed, and coat color or a photograph cannot establish a dog’s ancestry.
The Belgian Malinois provides the strongest direct comparison in the sources reviewed. The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes the German Shepherd as longer-bodied with smooth curves and the Malinois as boxier. Those are general descriptions, not guarantees about individual dogs.

17 dogs that may resemble German Shepherds
1. Belgian Malinois
The Belgian Malinois is one of the closest commonly discussed comparisons. Both breeds are herding dogs, and their erect-eared, athletic appearance can be similar. AKC describes the Malinois as boxier and the German Shepherd as longer-bodied with smoother curves. AKC reports Malinois male weights of 60–80 pounds and female weights of 40–60 pounds; its German Shepherd comparison gives up to 90 pounds for males and up to 70 pounds for females. These are source-reported ranges, not predictions for an individual dog.
Appearance is only part of the comparison: AKC says Malinois need substantial physical activity and engagement. Do not assume that a Malinois will have the same needs or be interchangeable with a German Shepherd.
2. Dutch Shepherd
The Dutch Shepherd is a recognized sheepdog from the Netherlands. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) lists short-haired, long-haired, and rough-haired varieties. Its brindle coat may stand out against familiar German Shepherd patterns, although individual dogs vary and coat alone is not a breed test.
3. Belgian Tervuren
The Tervuren is one of the four Belgian Shepherd varieties. Its coat and color can give some dogs a shepherd-like impression. The Royal Kennel Club describes the varieties as differing in coat color, texture, and length; resemblance to a German Shepherd depends on the individual dog.
4. Belgian Groenendael
Groenendael is another Belgian Shepherd variety. Its black coat may remind some readers of a black German Shepherd, though that shared color does not mean the dogs are the same breed or have the same care needs.
Rank #2
5. Belgian Laekenois
The Laekenois is the fourth Belgian Shepherd variety. The Royal Kennel Club describes its color as reddish fawn with black shading. It may offer a shepherd-like outline, but its coat texture and appearance differ from other Belgian varieties.
The Malinois, Tervuren, Groenendael, and Laekenois are varieties of Belgian Shepherd—not four unrelated breeds. The FCI lists them under that breed.
6. White Swiss Shepherd
The White Swiss Shepherd is included among the FCI’s sheepdog breeds. Its shepherd-type appearance makes it a broader comparison, but the FCI’s classification does not establish how closely it resembles a German Shepherd. Do not treat a white coat as proof that a dog is a German Shepherd.

7. Australian Shepherd
An Australian Shepherd may remind someone of a German Shepherd through its herding-dog appearance. It is a broader visual comparison, not one established as a close match by the sources reviewed here. A shared working-dog look does not establish shared ancestry or care requirements.
8. Australian Cattle Dog
The Australian Cattle Dog is another possible comparison for readers looking across herding dogs. Any resemblance depends on the individual dog and the features a viewer notices; appearance alone cannot identify a breed.
Rank #3
9. Border Collie
A Border Collie may share an alert, athletic herding-dog impression with a German Shepherd. This is a broad visual comparison, not a claim that the breeds have the same outline, coat, or temperament.
10. Rough Collie
A Rough Collie may appeal to readers looking for another shepherd-like dog with a different coat presentation. It is included as a broad comparison; the sources reviewed do not establish it as a close German Shepherd look-alike.

The Smooth Collie offers another herding-dog comparison. As with the other broad comparisons in this list, shared general features do not make it equivalent to a German Shepherd.
12. Beauceron
The Beauceron is a broader comparison for someone drawn to a substantial herding-dog appearance. The research reviewed for this article does not verify a detailed side-by-side comparison, so do not use resemblance as a guide to its size, temperament, or suitability.
13. Briard
The Briard is another French sheepdog that may interest readers comparing shepherd-type dogs. It is a broad visual comparison rather than one of the closest researched matches; confirm its specific coat and care needs with a reliable breed source.
Rank #4
14. Czechoslovakian Wolfdog
The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is included as a broader wolfdog comparison. A wolf-like or shepherd-like appearance is not evidence that it will behave like a German Shepherd, and this article’s research does not establish detailed ownership guidance for the breed.

15. Saarloos Wolfdog
The Saarloos Wolfdog is another broader wolfdog comparison. Do not infer temperament, suitability, or management needs from its appearance. Research the breed and local ownership requirements before considering one.
16. King Shepherd
The King Shepherd is a large shepherd type included as a broader comparison. Recognition and standards vary by registry, so the name alone does not guarantee a particular size, appearance, or temperament. Look into the specific breeder’s standards and practices.
17. Shiloh Shepherd
The Shiloh Shepherd is another large shepherd type that may appeal to readers seeking a shepherd-like dog. Standards and recognition can vary; descriptions such as “calmer” are not guarantees about an individual dog.

How to choose a German Shepherd look-alike
- Separate appearance from care. Similar ears, coat, or outline do not predict exercise, grooming, or temperament.
- Research the specific breed and variety. For Belgian Shepherds, remember that the four names above refer to varieties of one breed.
- Check the individual dog. Meet the dog where possible and ask about its history, behavior, and needs rather than relying on a photograph or label.
- Verify registry and breeder claims. Recognition and standards vary for some shepherd types, so ask which registry and standard a breeder follows.
For a mixed-breed dog, appearance can suggest possibilities but cannot reliably establish ancestry. The sources reviewed for this article do not establish a dependable visual identification method.

FAQ
What dog looks most like a German Shepherd?
The Belgian Malinois is one of the closest commonly discussed comparisons. AKC says the two breeds can be confused and describes the Malinois as boxier than the longer-bodied German Shepherd. The exact resemblance varies by individual dog.
What dogs look like German Shepherds but are smaller?
This research pass does not establish a smaller breed as the closest match. Compare the adult dog’s actual size and needs with reliable breed information rather than assuming that a similar appearance means a smaller German Shepherd.
Are the Malinois and Belgian Shepherd different breeds?
The Malinois is one of four Belgian Shepherd varieties listed by the FCI, alongside Groenendael, Laekenois, and Tervueren.
Does a German Shepherd-like coat identify a dog’s breed?
No. Coat color and appearance may suggest possibilities, but they cannot reliably establish ancestry. Resemblance is not a breed identification test.
