The Standard Poodle is the largest Poodle variety: the breed standard sets its height at over 15 inches at the shoulder. It is an active, intelligent dog with a low-shedding coat that requires regular brushing and clipping. This guide covers its size, temperament, activity, grooming, health screening, and what to consider before choosing one.

What is a Standard Poodle?

The Standard Poodle is the largest variety of Poodle, an active and intelligent breed. Poodles were developed as working dogs, and Standards often enjoy retrieving, swimming, training, and other activities with their people. Their curly coat tends to shed relatively little, but it requires substantial, ongoing care.

A Standard Poodle may suit an owner who enjoys training and can provide regular activity and coat care. It may be a poor fit for someone seeking a low-maintenance dog or one that can be left without engagement for long periods. Breed descriptions are not guarantees: individual temperament, health, socialization, and breeding history all matter.

Size, appearance, and coat

The Poodle Club of America standard describes the breed as active, intelligent, elegant, squarely built, and well proportioned. The elaborate styles seen in the show ring can make Poodles look ornamental, but the Standard is an athletic dog. Companion dogs may be kept in shorter trims, which can make coat care more manageable without eliminating brushing or clipping.

The coat is curly or corded and relatively non-shedding, according to the AKC. Loose hair may remain caught in the coat, where mats can form close to the skin if brushing does not reach the roots. Low shedding does not mean hypoallergenic or allergy-safe: people’s reactions vary, and no breed is guaranteed to be allergen-free. Anyone with allergies should spend time with Poodles before bringing one home.

Temperament and personality

The AKC describes Poodles as eager, athletic, highly trainable, and versatile. Many enjoy learning, retrieving, swimming, scent games, and structured activities. Intelligence and trainability do not mean that every dog will obey automatically or be content without guidance.

A dog without enough activity, training, rest, or environmental management may develop unwanted behaviors such as barking, chewing, or demanding attention. These behaviors should be considered in context rather than assumed to be inevitable breed traits.

Genetics, early socialization, training, health, and environment all affect temperament. Do not assume every Standard Poodle will be uniformly outgoing, quiet, or easy with children and other animals. Supervise interactions with toddlers, unfamiliar children, small pets, and unfamiliar dogs; a large, enthusiastic dog may accidentally knock over a child.

Exercise and enrichment

AKC guidance says Poodles of every size need daily exercise. The amount and type that suit an individual dog depend on factors such as age, fitness, growth, weather, orthopedic health, and veterinary advice.

Useful activities may include:

  • Walks with time to explore and sniff
  • Retrieving games, with attention to safe play and breaks
  • Swimming in suitable, secure water with supervision
  • Training, obedience, rally, agility, scent work, or other dog sports
  • Food puzzles, scent games, and short training sessions

A yard may be useful, but it does not replace interaction and exercise. Housing size alone does not determine whether a Standard Poodle can fit a household; consistent activity, training, enrichment, and care matter. Avoid pushing puppies through repetitive, high-impact exercise before they mature, and ask a veterinarian how to adjust activity during growth.

Training and socialization

Use reward-based training, clear expectations, and repetition. Early priorities include leash walking, recall foundations, polite greetings, settling, and calm exposure to household sounds, visitors, surfaces, and appropriate animals. Introduce handling and grooming gradually so brushing, bathing, nail care, and clippers are familiar rather than frightening.

Keep sessions short and adjust the difficulty to the dog. If a dog shows serious fear, reactivity, aggression, separation-related distress, or panic during handling, consult a qualified trainer or veterinary behavior professional.

Grooming: a major recurring commitment

Low shedding does not mean low maintenance. Mats can form near the skin, and severe matting may require shaving to allow new growth. A shorter trim can reduce coat-management work, but it does not remove the need for regular brushing and clipping.

A practical grooming routine

  1. Brush thoroughly. Part the coat and work in sections down to the skin. The AKC recommends daily brushing for Poodles kept in longer coats and identifies a slicker brush as a useful tool. Take care not to scratch the skin.
  2. Check with a comb. Use a comb to check for tangles close to the skin, including behind the ears, at the armpits, around the collar, and between the legs.
  3. Plan bathing and clipping. AKC grooming guidance gives bathing every four to eight weeks on average, depending on coat and brushing needs. It says clipping is commonly done on a similar interval according to the desired coat length. A shorter pet trim and an active or muddy lifestyle can affect the routine.
  4. Dry the coat. Dry thoroughly after bathing and introduce any dryer gradually, stopping if the dog is distressed.
  5. Maintain nails and teeth. A dog nail trimmer or grinder may be used; regular tooth brushing with dog toothpaste and veterinary dental care are also part of care.
  6. Ask about ears. Seek individual guidance from a veterinarian or groomer rather than assuming hair removal or a particular cleaning method is right for every dog.

A slicker brush and comb are relevant basic tools for working through curls and checking for tangles. Clippers, blades, heat, mats, and skin folds require care; owners who are inexperienced may prefer a qualified groomer while learning. Professional grooming commonly recurs every four to six weeks for many pet owners, though the dog’s coat, lifestyle, desired trim, and groomer’s advice can change the schedule.

At-home grooming versus a professional groomer

At-home grooming Professional grooming
Can build handling skills and reduce service fees Offers trained technique and specialized equipment
Requires time, practice, drying space, and safe equipment Requires recurring appointments and availability
Matting or inexperience can increase risk Still requires brushing and handling between appointments

If you do not want to learn clipping, check the availability and cost of professional grooming before choosing the breed. Costs vary by location, coat condition, trim, dog size, and behavior.

Health concerns and responsible screening

The AKC lists hip dysplasia, eye disorders, idiopathic epilepsy, sebaceous adenitis, von Willebrand disease, and immune-mediated disorders among possible Poodle health concerns. It notes that Standard Poodles are more at risk for gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), commonly called bloat, and sebaceous adenitis. These are breed-level considerations, not predictions or diagnoses for an individual dog.

The Poodle Club of America recommends screening Standard Poodle breeding dogs for:

  • Hip dysplasia through OFA evaluation or PennHIP
  • Eye conditions through an examination by a board-certified ACVO veterinary ophthalmologist
  • Autoimmune thyroiditis
  • Neonatal encephalopathy with seizures (NEwS), through DNA testing or clear-by-parentage status
  • von Willebrand disease I (vWD I), through DNA testing or clear-by-parentage status

These are parent-club recommendations for breeder screening, not a substitute for veterinary care. Ask to see actual results for both parents and discuss them with a veterinarian. A screening protocol can inform breeding decisions, but cannot guarantee a puppy will never become ill.

A responsible breeder should discuss test results, family health and longevity, temperament, and known health problems, and provide veterinary records, a written contract, and a clear return or rehoming policy. If you are concerned about possible signs of illness, consult a veterinarian rather than attempting to diagnose or treat the dog yourself.

Bloat: recognize an emergency

Discuss GDV risk and any preventive options with your veterinarian; what is appropriate depends on the individual dog. Seek emergency veterinary care immediately for sudden abdominal enlargement or painful distension, repeated unproductive retching, collapse, severe weakness, restlessness, or rapid deterioration. Do not wait to see whether severe symptoms resolve. Identify an after-hours emergency clinic before you need one.

Is a Standard Poodle good for families?

A Standard Poodle may suit an active family, couple, single owner, or experienced first-time owner prepared to provide activity, training, supervision, and regular grooming. Its size and enthusiasm require thought around toddlers, small pets, visitors, vehicles, fencing, and housing rules. Teach children respectful behavior and supervise all interactions; never leave a young child alone with any dog.

Questions for a breeder

  • May I see the parents’ actual hip, eye, thyroid, and DNA screening results?
  • What do those results show?
  • What are the health, longevity, and temperament histories of close relatives?
  • How are puppies introduced to handling, grooming, household sounds, and new surfaces?
  • What veterinary records, contract, and return policy are provided?

Meet adult dogs from the line when possible. Be cautious if a seller refuses to show records, dismisses testing, pressures you to pay immediately, or promises guaranteed temperament or lifelong health.

Questions for a rescue organization

Ask about known medical history, behavior around children and dogs, grooming condition, age, training, separation behavior, and any known bite or reactivity history. Family-history information may be unavailable, so plan around the individual dog and the information the organization can provide.

First-year preparation and cost planning

Costs depend on location, veterinary and grooming prices, how you obtain the dog, and whether it arrives as a puppy or adult. Build a budget that accounts for acquisition or adoption, veterinary care, food, grooming supplies or appointments, training, equipment, and an emergency reserve. Consider insurance only after reviewing coverage terms, exclusions, waiting periods, and deductibles.

Before the dog arrives, identify a primary veterinarian and emergency clinic, plan for coat care, prepare a safe rest area, and arrange early training and socialization. Include recurring grooming and possible emergency veterinary costs, not only the purchase price and food.

Bottom line

The Standard Poodle is an active, intelligent companion that may thrive with owners who provide daily exercise, training, and engagement. Its relatively low-shedding coat comes with substantial grooming needs. If you are prepared for ongoing coat care and thoughtful health planning, it may be a good fit; if you want a low-maintenance or minimally interactive pet, consider another breed.
