A 2024 UK study estimated life expectancy at birth for companion cats under primary veterinary care at 11.74 years. That is a population benchmark, not a prediction for an individual cat or a universal average. Estimates depend on the population studied and on whether researchers measure life expectancy from birth or ages at death in a selected group.
What is the average lifespan of a domestic cat?
The Royal Veterinary College’s VetCompass study estimated life expectancy at birth at 11.74 years for UK companion cats under primary veterinary care, using practice data from 2019. The study reported a 95% confidence interval of 11.61–11.87 years.
In that same study, estimated life expectancy at birth was 12.51 years for female cats and 11.18 years for male cats. These are group estimates, not rules for individual cats. A cat’s health history, body condition, and circumstances matter; a population average cannot tell an owner how long a particular cat will live.
Why do cat lifespan estimates vary?
“Average lifespan” can refer to different measurements:

#1 Best Overall
- Life expectancy: an estimate of how long cats in a defined population are expected to live, often measured from birth.
- Median age at death: the midpoint of observed deaths in a particular sample; half of the cats died younger and half older.
- Study-population results: figures from a defined group, such as cats under primary veterinary care or cats examined after death.
These measures are not interchangeable. The UK VetCompass life-table estimate is based on primary veterinary care records. By contrast, a 2022 UC Davis-associated study examined 3,108 cat necropsy cases from 1989 through 2019. A necropsy sample is selected and should not be substituted for a broad-population life expectancy estimate.
The necropsy study reported observed median ages at death of 7.25 years for outdoor cats, 9.43 for indoor-only cats, and 9.82 for indoor/outdoor cats. However, the study’s multivariable analysis did not find environmental status significant. These raw group comparisons do not establish that one housing category causes a particular lifespan.
What factors are associated with lifespan?
The UK VetCompass study found that being entire, purebred, or at non-ideal body weight was significantly associated with decreased lifespan. These are associations in a study population, not proof that any one factor determines an individual cat’s lifespan.
The UC Davis necropsy study’s regression analysis associated intact status and FeLV positivity with decreased survival time. It did not find environmental status, FIV status, or breed status significant in that model. Differences in study design and population mean these findings should not be treated as universal rules.

Among 12 breeds or breed groups analyzed in the UK study, reported estimates included 14.42 years for Burmese cats, 14.39 years for Birman cats, and 6.68 years for Sphynx cats. These are study-specific estimates, with substantial uncertainty possible for smaller breed subgroups—not guaranteed breed rankings or predictions for an individual cat.
When is a cat considered senior?
Life-stage labels are care frameworks, not predictions of remaining life. The 2021 AAHA/AAFP guidelines define kitten as birth to under 1 year, young adult as 1 through 6 years, mature adult as 7 through 10 years, and senior as over 10 years. Cornell’s Feline Health Center says cats are commonly considered older at 12 to 14 years.
| Reference | Senior or older-cat guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| AAHA/AAFP, 2021 | Senior: over 10 years | Age cutoffs are approximate; care should be individualized. |
| Cornell Feline Health Center | Cats are commonly considered older at 12–14 years | Changing health or behavior should not automatically be dismissed as old age. |
AAHA/AAFP recommends at least annual examinations for all cats and visits at least every six months for senior cats. Ask your veterinarian what schedule and monitoring are appropriate for your cat.
Senior does not mean “near the end”
As Cornell’s Richard Goldstein, DVM, puts it, “Growing older is not a disease.” A life-stage label alone cannot determine a cat’s health or quality of life. Discuss new or changing signs with a veterinarian rather than assuming they are simply part of aging.

How can I support my cat’s health as it ages?
Keep up with veterinary care
Routine examinations can help you and your veterinarian assess changes and decide whether further evaluation is needed. AAHA/AAFP recommends at least annual examinations for all cats and at least six-month intervals for senior cats. Your veterinarian can tailor care to age, health, and history.
Monitor body condition and changes
The UK VetCompass study found an association between non-ideal body weight and decreased lifespan. Ask your veterinarian to assess your cat’s body condition and discuss appropriate nutrition and any weight change.
Changes in appetite, weight, behavior, or general health warrant attention, especially in older cats. Cornell advises that such changes should not automatically be dismissed as old age.
Discuss sterilization and infectious-disease risks
The UK study associated entire status with decreased lifespan, and the UC Davis necropsy study associated intact status with decreased survival time in its regression analysis. These findings do not determine the right decision for every cat; discuss your cat’s circumstances with a veterinarian.
Rank #4
The UC Davis study also associated FeLV positivity with decreased survival time. Its analysis did not find FIV status significant. Ask a veterinarian about testing and appropriate care based on your cat’s exposure history and health.
How old is a cat in human years?
Human-age comparisons are rough explanations of life stages, not a formula for calculating a cat’s remaining lifespan. The sources in this research do not establish a single precise conversion, so avoid treating a chart as a measure of an individual cat’s biological age.

Arrange a veterinary appointment for a persistent or unexplained change in your cat’s health or behavior. Cornell’s Feline Health Center cautions against automatically attributing changes to age. Your veterinarian can assess the signs and advise on next steps.
This article provides general information and cannot predict an individual cat’s lifespan or replace veterinary care. A veterinarian who knows your cat’s history can give advice tailored to that cat.

Safe, comfortable surroundings and access to the things a cat needs are practical parts of care. Cornell veterinarian Emily Levine emphasizes that owners should remember food, water, and litter-box needs as well as medications. Adjust access and the home environment to your cat’s needs, especially as they change with age.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do cats usually live?
The 2024 UK VetCompass study estimated life expectancy at birth at 11.74 years for companion cats under primary veterinary care, based on 2019 practice data. It is a study-specific benchmark, not a prediction for every cat.
Do female cats live longer than male cats?
In the UK VetCompass study, estimated life expectancy at birth was 12.51 years for females and 11.18 years for males. These group estimates do not predict the lifespan of an individual cat.
Does indoor or outdoor status determine a cat’s lifespan?
No single housing category determines an individual cat’s lifespan. In the UC Davis necropsy study, observed median ages at death differed across housing groups, but environmental status was not significant in the study’s multivariable analysis.

AAHA/AAFP classifies cats over 10 years as senior, while Cornell says cats are commonly considered older at 12 to 14 years. These are approximate care-stage conventions, not estimates of remaining life.
The Bottom Line
The best current benchmark in this research is 11.74 years of life expectancy at birth for UK companion cats under primary veterinary care. It is not a universal average or a forecast for an individual cat. Study population, measurement, and a cat’s own health and circumstances all matter; regular veterinary care can help owners respond to their cat’s needs as they change.
