Giardia infection in cats may cause no illness, but symptomatic cats can have persistent or recurring diarrhea and weight loss. A veterinarian must interpret test results and decide whether treatment is appropriate. Prompt feces removal, cleaning, and—when advised—bathing can help reduce reinfection.

In the United States, no drug is approved specifically to treat giardiasis in cats. Do not give a cat human or dog medication, albendazole, or an internet-suggested dose; ask a veterinarian about diagnosis, treatment, and safe cleaning.

What is Giardia in cats?

Giardia is a microscopic intestinal parasite. The infection is called giardiasis. Veterinary sources may refer to the organism as Giardia duodenalis, Giardia intestinalis, or Giardia lamblia.

Giardia has two important forms:

  • The active form lives in the intestine.
  • The cyst form passes in feces and can infect a cat that swallows it. Cysts persist better in cool, damp conditions than in warm, dry conditions.

Cats become infected by swallowing cysts from fecal contamination, including on paws, fur, objects, or in contaminated water. Medication may be needed, but reducing environmental contamination is also important.

Which cats are most likely to become ill?

Any cat can carry Giardia or develop giardiasis. Clinical illness is more likely in kittens and debilitated cats. Cats in crowded or multi-cat settings may have greater exposure to contaminated feces and shared items.

Some healthy adult cats have no symptoms. In a multi-cat home, ask a veterinarian whether other pets should be tested or treated rather than making that decision based only on symptoms.

Giardia symptoms in cats

Some cats never show signs. When illness occurs, symptoms may include:

  • Acute, chronic, or intermittent diarrhea
  • Soft or poorly formed, pale, foul-smelling stool
  • Mucus or a fatty appearance in the stool
  • Weight loss
  • Vomiting, which is possible but not typical

These signs are not specific to Giardia. Other gastrointestinal conditions can look similar, so diarrhea alone does not confirm infection and a positive test must be interpreted in context.

When diarrhea needs prompt veterinary attention

Contact a veterinarian promptly if diarrhea is persistent or recurring. Seek prompt advice if your cat is a kitten, appears dehydrated or in poor condition, is losing weight, or has severe or worsening signs. A veterinarian can assess the cat and investigate other causes.

How cats catch Giardia

The principal route is fecal-oral transmission: a cat swallows cysts that originated in feces. This can happen through contaminated paws, fur, litter, water, surfaces, or shared pet items. Promptly removing feces helps reduce exposure. Soil, grass, and standing water are difficult to decontaminate.

How Giardia is diagnosed in cats

A veterinarian may choose among fecal tests based on the cat’s signs and the clinical situation. These methods detect different evidence of infection; sample quality and intermittent cyst shedding affect interpretation.

Method What it detects Important limitation
Fecal microscopy or flotation Giardia cysts in a stool sample Intermittent shedding means a single sample may miss infection.
Antigen testing Giardia antigen in feces Results require veterinary interpretation alongside symptoms and other findings.
Molecular testing Giardia genetic material A veterinarian or diagnostic laboratory interprets the result in context.

Why one negative stool test may not rule out Giardia

Giardia cysts are shed intermittently, so a single sample can miss infection. If suspicion remains, a veterinarian may recommend multiple samples or repeat testing. The veterinarian and diagnostic laboratory should advise how to collect samples.

After treatment, a positive antigen or molecular test may persist for a variable period and does not by itself prove reinfection or treatment failure. When follow-up is indicated, CAPC describes fecal flotation 24–48 hours after therapy, especially if signs have not resolved. Your veterinarian should decide which test and timing are appropriate.

Should an asymptomatic cat with Giardia be treated?

There is no single rule for every positive cat. CAPC’s majority opinion is that some cats with infection but no clinical signs may not need treatment. The decision should account for the individual cat and household.

Consider with your veterinarian whether Giardia fits the cat’s signs, whether another cause is more likely, and whether other pets or household circumstances affect the plan. A positive test does not mean every asymptomatic cat automatically needs medication, but the result should be interpreted rather than ignored.

Giardia treatment for cats

Treatment should be prescribed and supervised by a veterinarian. In the United States, no drug is approved specifically for treating giardiasis in cats. CAPC lists fenbendazole and metronidazole as possible veterinarian-directed protocols, while noting limitations in feline treatment data. A veterinarian must assess the medication, formulation, duration, interactions, and the cat’s health. Do not copy a dose from an online post.

Important medication warnings

  • Do not give leftover human or dog medication unless a veterinarian specifically directs it for your cat.
  • Do not give albendazole. CAPC states that it is not safe in cats.
  • Do not treat a cat with an over-the-counter product or internet dose. Ask a veterinarian about any proposed medication and its risks.

A veterinarian may also assess hydration, nutrition, concurrent parasites, other causes of diarrhea, or underlying disease. Supportive measures do not replace diagnosis, veterinary-directed treatment, or hygiene.

What if the diarrhea does not improve?

Persistent signs can have more than one explanation, including reinfection, another gastrointestinal condition, concurrent parasites, or an underlying illness. A positive antigen or molecular test alone does not establish treatment failure. Do not repeat, combine, or increase medication on your own; ask the veterinarian to reassess the cat and decide whether further testing or a different plan is appropriate.

Cleaning the home to reduce reinfection

Cysts in feces can contribute to reinfection. Remove feces promptly and at least daily, clean contaminated items and surfaces, and allow them to dry thoroughly. Ask your veterinarian for a household plan, including whether and how to bathe the cat.

A practical Giardia-cleaning checklist

  1. Remove feces promptly and daily. CAPC advises disposing of fecal material with municipal waste. Follow your veterinarian’s guidance for litter and litter-box cleaning.
  2. Wash your hands after cleanup. Use careful hygiene when handling feces, litter, bedding, or contaminated items.
  3. Clean contaminated items and surfaces. Wash suitable bowls, litter boxes, bedding, and other items regularly. Follow item and product instructions, then allow items and surfaces to dry thoroughly.
  4. Ask about bathing. Veterinary references recommend bathing infected cats to remove cysts from the coat. Discuss whether bathing is appropriate and which shampoo to use with your veterinarian; bathing is not treatment for intestinal infection.
  5. Address outdoor contamination realistically. Soil, grass, and standing water are difficult to decontaminate. Remove feces and ask your veterinarian how to limit exposure.
  6. Discuss other pets. Ask your veterinarian whether other cats or dogs should be evaluated. Do not medicate them without veterinary advice.

Choosing and using cleaning products safely

Use cleaning products only as directed for the intended surface. Follow label instructions and veterinary advice, keep the cat away from wet products, and allow cleaned surfaces to dry thoroughly. Never apply household disinfectants to the cat, soil, or grass.

Can cats give Giardia to people?

Cat-to-human transmission is considered uncertain or uncommon in the cited North American guidance. CAPC says human infection from a dog or cat source has not been conclusively demonstrated in North America; a shared infection in a household does not establish that a pet infected a person.

Handwashing and prudent feces handling remain appropriate. Wash hands after handling feces or litter, and take extra care when someone in the household is more susceptible to infection. People with persistent symptoms should contact a healthcare professional.

Can one negative stool test rule out Giardia in a cat?

Not always. Cysts may be shed intermittently, and a veterinarian may recommend multiple samples or repeat testing if suspicion remains.

Is there an approved Giardia medicine for cats?

In the United States, no drug is approved specifically for giardiasis in cats. A veterinarian may consider a treatment protocol and must determine whether it is appropriate and safe for the individual cat.

Can Giardia spread from my cat to me?

Cat-to-human transmission is considered uncertain or uncommon in the cited North American guidance. Handwashing and careful handling of feces are still sensible precautions.

Why might diarrhea continue after treatment?

Persistent diarrhea can have causes other than Giardia, and follow-up test results need veterinary interpretation. Contact your veterinarian rather than repeating or changing medication yourself.
