The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) and The International Cat Association (TICA) describe the breed as typically adaptable and interested in human company, but a breed profile cannot guarantee an individual cat’s temperament or health. This guide covers the breed’s appearance, care, household fit, and what to consider when choosing a cat.
An American Shorthair is a recognized pedigreed breed, not simply any short-haired cat in the United States. A domestic shorthair is generally a random-bred cat; a similar coat or tabby pattern alone does not establish American Shorthair pedigree.

What is the history of the American Shorthair?
CFA traces the breed’s roots to short-haired cats kept on ships and farms to control rodents. These working cats were valued for their usefulness and ability to adapt. CFA says the breed’s current name was adopted in 1965. It also identifies American Shorthairs among the first five breeds recognized when CFA was founded in 1906.
The name distinguishes the standardized breed from random-bred short-haired cats. The breed comes in many colors and patterns; silver and brown classic tabbies are popular, but coat color alone does not establish pedigree.

American Shorthair appearance and physical characteristics
CFA’s 2024 show standard describes the American Shorthair as medium to large, strongly built, muscular, balanced, and symmetrical. TICA likewise emphasizes a muscular, well-proportioned body. Both describe a short coat; CFA’s standard calls it thick and dense. The shared picture is a sturdy, balanced cat rather than one with exaggerated features.
American Shorthairs come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. The silver tabby is especially associated with the breed, but it is only one of many possibilities. If pedigree matters to you, ask for documentation rather than relying on appearance.
American Shorthair temperament and personality
CFA describes the breed as even-tempered, comfortable with human company, and interested in interactive play while retaining some independence. TICA describes it as calm, devoted, playful, and adaptable, including to apartment living. These are general registry descriptions, not promises about any individual cat. Meet the cat and consider its observed behavior and needs.

Are American Shorthair cats good family pets?
CFA describes patience with children and tolerance of other animals as general breed characteristics. Still, compatibility depends on the particular cat, the other household members, and how introductions are handled. Teach children to treat cats gently, provide the cat with places to retreat, and supervise interactions.

Can an American Shorthair be left alone?
The breed’s reported independence does not mean a cat can be left without care or stimulation. Plan for regular social interaction, play, food, water, a clean litter area, and a safe environment. Consider the individual cat’s age, health, and behavior when deciding how much company and supervision it needs.
Grooming and shedding
American Shorthairs have modest grooming needs, but they shed. CFA says the breed sheds its undercoat in spring, with lighter shedding in fall, and recommends daily brushing. TICA says weekly combing can remove dead hair. Adjust brushing to your cat’s coat and shedding, and stop if grooming causes distress. A bath is generally unnecessary for an ordinary pet unless there is a specific need.

A wire-toothed slicker brush or grooming mitt is an option CFA names for this coat. Brushing helps remove loose hair and gives you a chance to notice coat or skin changes; it does not replace veterinary care.
Exercise, play, and enrichment
CFA notes the breed’s strong hunting instinct and recommends interactive play, including feather and wand games. Regular play gives a cat an appropriate outlet to stalk, chase, and pounce. Supervise wand toys and store them safely after use.
For an indoor cat, offer choices such as interactive play, scratching surfaces, a secure climbing or observation spot, toys, and quiet resting places. Watch how the individual cat responds and adjust activities to suit its abilities and interests.

Feeding and weight management
The dossier does not identify a special breed-specific diet. Ask your veterinarian to help choose an appropriate complete diet and feeding plan for your cat’s life stage, health, and body condition. Keep an eye on body condition and discuss weight changes with a veterinarian rather than starting a restrictive diet without guidance.

CFA says the breed is not currently known for breed-specific health problems. CFA also notes that HCM cases were seen in some American Shorthairs in the 1980s and 1990s and says those cases largely disappeared through preventive testing and selective breeding. This is CFA’s account of the breed, not a guarantee that an individual cat cannot develop heart disease.
PetMD describes the breed as generally healthy and reports a lifespan estimate of 15–20 years. That estimate is not a promise. A veterinarian can advise on health concerns and appropriate preventive care for an individual cat.

When choosing a cat, ask about its health history and available testing, and review relevant records. CFA suggests attending a cat show, asking for breeder recommendations, considering a retired adult, or using its Find-A-Breeder resource. Meet the cat where possible and assess its behavior and fit with your home. The research does not establish particular breeders, prices, or current availability.
Is an American Shorthair right for you?
The breed’s registry-described adaptability may suit a range of households, but the individual cat matters more than a general reputation. Consider the cat’s observed energy level, grooming tolerance, health records, play needs, and response to children or other animals.
