Short answer: For a small, localized reaction, stop your dog from licking or scratching, apply a wrapped cold pack for about 10 minutes, and monitor closely. Ask a veterinarian before giving medication. Severe swelling, widespread hives, breathing trouble, drooling, vomiting or diarrhea, disorientation, or seizures need urgent veterinary care. Separately, protect against heartworm disease with a veterinarian-directed prevention plan.
A small, stable, localized bump on a dog can often be cooled and monitored, but its appearance cannot confirm that a mosquito caused it. Prevent licking or scratching, use a wrapped cold pack briefly, and contact your veterinarian before giving medication. Seek urgent care for severe or worsening reactions or whole-body symptoms.

What a mosquito bite on a dog may look like
Dogs can react to an insect bite or sting by suddenly pawing at the face, chewing at a foot, scratching, or developing a small area of swelling. The reaction depends on the dog’s immune response and on the insect involved.
There is no reliably unique appearance that lets an owner identify a mosquito bite at home. A red bump or itchy patch could also result from fleas, ticks, allergic skin disease, infection, or another insect. Treat initial irritation conservatively, but do not assume every bump is harmless or mosquito-related.

A mild, localized reaction that is not getting worse can usually be watched initially. Contact your veterinarian if the skin change remains, spreads, becomes painful, drains, repeatedly returns, or is accompanied by significant itching. Persistent self-trauma can damage the skin and create an opening for infection.
How to treat a mild, localized reaction at home
- Stop licking, chewing, and scratching. Supervise your dog. If necessary, use an Elizabethan collar that prevents access to the area.
- Cool the area briefly. Place a cold pack inside a cloth and apply it for about 10 minutes. Do not put ice directly on the skin, and stop if the area becomes unusually pale, painful, or uncomfortable.
- Observe your dog. Watch the swelling and overall behavior, including breathing, energy, and any development of hives, drooling, vomiting, or diarrhea.
- Ask your veterinarian before giving any medication. Do not give human medication or guess a dose. A veterinarian can advise whether an antihistamine is appropriate and what dose to use.
- Do not apply human insect repellent. Products intended for people and animals are not interchangeable. Use only products labeled for dogs and follow the current label.
A cool compress may reduce local discomfort; it cannot treat a severe allergic reaction or prevent heartworm disease. Do not let home care delay veterinary attention if the reaction is worsening.
When a mosquito bite is an emergency
Seek urgent veterinary care for severe swelling around the head or neck, hives over the body, noisy or difficult breathing, excessive drooling, vomiting or diarrhea, dizziness or disorientation, or seizures. Allergic reactions can progress to respiratory distress or shock. If your dog has trouble breathing, collapses, or has a seizure, go to an emergency veterinary clinic immediately.
A bite or sting in the mouth or throat deserves particular caution because swelling can interfere with eating or breathing. Do not wait to see whether it improves if the airway may be involved. For uncertain or persistent skin changes without urgent signs, contact your regular veterinarian.

The bigger concern: mosquitoes can transmit heartworm
A visible bump is usually not the most important mosquito-related risk for a dog. Mosquitoes can transmit Dirofilaria immitis, the parasite that causes canine heartworm disease. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine explains that mosquito transmission makes prevention an important part of heartworm protection.
A mosquito repellent may reduce exposure, but it is not a heartworm preventive. Any dog a mosquito can reach may be exposed, so indoor living does not eliminate risk. The appropriate preventive and testing schedule should be set with your veterinarian.

Year-round heartworm prevention is the foundation
The central preventive measure is a veterinarian-selected heartworm preventive plan, together with the testing schedule your veterinarian advises. The American Veterinary Medical Association describes continuous year-round heartworm protection. Ask your veterinarian which product and schedule fit your dog’s health and circumstances.
A mosquito-repellent product is an additional layer, not a replacement for heartworm medication. Repellents may reduce exposure, but they do not prevent heartworm disease in place of a veterinary-selected preventive plan.

Reducing bites is worthwhile, but no home measure can guarantee that a dog will never encounter a mosquito. Combine practical steps recommended by the Merck Veterinary Manual:
- Remove standing water. Empty, cover, or turn over containers that collect water.
- Keep gutters clear. Clear blocked gutters where practical so they do not hold water.
- Adjust outdoor activity when practical. Avoid early morning and early evening mosquito activity when feasible.
- Use screened or enclosed areas when feasible. Screened housing can reduce exposure.
Merck reports that topical imidacloprid can repel adult female mosquitoes from dogs for up to four weeks. This duration is specific to the product discussed by Merck, not a universal claim for all products. Check current label directions, regional authorization, species restrictions, and your dog’s suitability with your veterinarian.
How to choose a dog mosquito repellent
If you are considering a dog mosquito repellent, evaluate the product by its current label rather than a general claim that it is natural, pet-safe, or effective for all animals. Check that it is labeled for dogs, meets your dog’s age and weight requirements, and clearly states its active ingredient, application directions, and duration. Ask your veterinarian about safety around other household pets and whether the product suits your dog.
Repellents reduce exposure; they do not replace a veterinarian-selected heartworm preventive and testing plan. Product availability, authorization, restrictions, and label wording can vary by location and change over time. Follow the current package label.

Do not put human DEET directly on a dog
Do not apply a human DEET product directly to your dog. VCA Animal Hospitals warns that DEET exposure can cause vomiting, diarrhea, disorientation, tremors, and seizures in dogs and cats. Contact a veterinarian promptly if your dog has been exposed and develops signs of illness.
Be cautious with natural remedies
A natural label does not establish that a product is safe for every dog or effective against mosquito-borne heartworm. Removing standing water and using screens can reduce exposure, but these steps are not equivalent to a veterinary heartworm preventive. Do not stop a prescribed preventive in favor of an unproven home remedy.

Yes. A mosquito can reach an indoor dog, so indoor living does not eliminate exposure. Follow your veterinarian’s heartworm prevention and testing recommendations.
When should I call the vet about a suspected mosquito bite?
Seek urgent veterinary care for severe head or neck swelling, widespread hives, breathing difficulty, excessive drooling, vomiting or diarrhea, disorientation, or seizures. Contact your regular veterinarian for a skin change that persists, spreads, becomes painful, or keeps returning.
The Bottom Line
A suspected mosquito bite may need only brief cooling and protection from scratching, but a bump cannot be confidently diagnosed at home by appearance. Seek veterinary care for severe or whole-body symptoms, and follow a veterinarian-selected heartworm prevention and testing plan. Repellents and yard measures can reduce exposure, but they are not substitutes for heartworm prevention.
