The Kooikerhondje’s history explains its behavior
The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje originated in the Netherlands and worked in a duck-decoy system. Its movement and white-plumed tail attracted ducks toward a trap. LICG notes that similar dogs appear in seventeenth-century paintings and that the breed nearly disappeared as duck decoys declined. Recovery efforts began during World War II, and formal recognition in the Netherlands followed in 1971. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) records definitive acceptance in 1990.
This working history helps explain why Kooikerhondjes are often alert, active and responsive to their owner. They may enjoy activities that combine movement and problem-solving, but breed descriptions are general tendencies, not guarantees about an individual dog.
Appearance and size
The Kooikerhondje is a small, balanced dog, usually slightly longer than it is tall. LICG gives ideal shoulder heights of 40 cm for males and 38 cm for females and a weight of about 10 kg; individual dogs may differ from these breed-description figures.

The medium-length coat is straight or slightly wavy, with a white base and clear orange-red patches. The tail has a white plume, and the ears ideally have dark fringes, often called “earrings.” The breed standard and appearance descriptions are not a promise that every dog will have identical markings.
Temperament: alert, sensitive, and family-oriented
Breed descriptions characterize the Kooikerhondje as intelligent, lively, active and sensitive, often with a strong bond to its owner. Many are reserved around unfamiliar people and may be uncomfortable with loud sounds or unwanted handling. When insecure, an individual dog may withdraw or react defensively.
Temperament depends on the individual dog, its early experiences, health and handling. Calm, consistent guidance and respectful socialization are important. Introduce people, children, dogs and other animals gradually, and provide puppies with plenty of rest. Children and dogs should be supervised; do not leave them alone together.
Exercise and mental stimulation
Kooikerhondjes need regular activity and mental challenges. The Royal Kennel Club lists exercise needs as up to one hour per day, while LICG describes the breed as needing quite a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. These are general breed-profile recommendations, not a fixed prescription for every dog. Suitable activities, depending on the dog and safe conditioning, can include:
- Walks, play and outdoor exploration
- Retrieve games and swimming

A brief walk alone may not satisfy every healthy adult Kooikerhondje. If a dog seems restless or has difficulty settling, consider its routine, enrichment and rest, and seek qualified behavioral or veterinary advice when appropriate rather than assuming every issue needs more physical exercise.

The breed is often quick to learn, but its sensitivity makes the training approach important. Use calm, consistent, reward-based methods. Grooming and routine care
Brush the coat weekly and check longer feathering around the ears, neck, chest, tail and rear legs for tangles. Ask a breeder which tests apply to the litter under current local guidance, request the actual results for both parents, and ask how the health of relatives is considered. Depending on the applicable guidance, relevant records may include eye examinations, patella evaluations, hip results, and DNA test results for vWD3 and ENM. - Can I see the actual health-test results for both parents?
- Which tests are required or recommended by the relevant national breed club?
- What is known about the health of relatives, including concerns such as polymyositis, renal disorders and epilepsy?

- What is your written return or lifetime-placement policy?
