Indiana Dunes National Park combines 15 miles of Lake Michigan coast with more than 50 miles of trails through dunes, woodlands, prairies, and wetlands. Plan around one or two destinations rather than expecting a single central park loop: beaches, trailheads, and facilities are spread across the area. Check current access, lake conditions, fees, closures, and pet rules before you go.
The park’s dispersed layout matters especially if you are bringing a dog, traveling with children, need accessible facilities, or have only a few hours. Choose a destination for the outing you want, and allow time for travel between sites.
This guide covers park orientation, beaches, trails, dogs, camping, safety, and trip planning. Start with the official park map, then check current fee information and site-specific alerts.

- Indiana Dunes National Park is managed by the National Park Service.
- Indiana Dunes State Park is managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
They are adjacent, but their entrance fees, facilities, and rules are separate. A national-park pass does not cover the state-park entrance fee. Confirm which destination a beach, trailhead, campground, or event belongs to before you navigate there.
The National Park Service’s places-to-go page and official map help with planning because the park is divided by public roads and developed areas.

Best places to start
Indiana Dunes Visitor Center

Choose a beach or shoreline area by activity
There is no universally best beach in the national park. Parking, facilities, lifeguard service, routes to the water, and conditions vary. The NPS identifies shoreline areas including West Beach, Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, Porter Beach, Kemil Beach, Dunbar Beach, Lake View Beach, Central Avenue Beach, and Mount Baldy Beach. Check current beach conditions before swimming: waves, rip currents, and water quality change.
West Beach: beach, dunes, and forest trails
West Beach is a choice for combining Lake Michigan shoreline time with dune and forest trails. Lifeguards are offered only at West Beach and Indiana Dunes State Park during the Memorial Day-to-Labor Day season; check current dates, hours, and conditions before traveling. Dogs are prohibited from the lifeguarded swimming area during the seasonal restriction described below.
Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk: paved shoreline access
Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk offers paved shoreline access and a shorter outing that does not depend entirely on soft sand. Check the park accessibility information for current facilities and seasonal equipment.

Porter, Kemil, Dunbar, Lake View, and Central Avenue beaches

Use the official map and check current conditions rather than assuming that every beach has the same services. The NPS beach page notes that beach parking hours and fees may vary; verify current details before your visit.
Mount Baldy: check access before you go
Do not assume that Mount Baldy is freely open for climbing. Check the latest NPS map, alerts, and tour information before planning a visit or expecting summit access.
Trail systems and the best first choices
The park has more than 50 miles of trails across dunes, woods, prairies, and wetlands. Routes differ in distance, surface, difficulty, accessibility, and dog access. Review the official trail map and current alerts before setting out.
Good choices for a first visit
- West Beach: a beach and dune-trail combination.
- Paul H. Douglas Center and Miller Woods: an education and nature outing.
- Great Marsh: a birding destination with an overlook.
- Bailly-Chellberg: a combination of natural scenery and cultural resources.
- Cowles Bog: a more demanding, habitat-focused hike. The NPS describes a five-mile round-trip route from Cowles Bog to the beach.
These are planning suggestions, not an official NPS ranking. Trail conditions and suitability can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOther named trail systems
The official map identifies trail systems at Tolleston Dunes, Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, Little Calumet River-Mnoké Prairie, Glenwood and Calumet Dunes, Dune Ridge, Mount Baldy, Heron Rookery, Pinhook Bog, Hobart Prairie Grove, and Hoosier Prairie. Use current NPS trail information to compare routes, surfaces, dog rules, and whether a trail reaches the lakeshore.
Do not judge a trail’s difficulty solely by its distance. Sand, heat, elevation changes, mud, and weather can make a route demanding.
Activities beyond hiking
Birding and wildlife observation
The park’s varied habitats make it a destination for wildlife observation. The NPS highlights the Little Calumet River area for spring wildflowers and migrating birds, especially in April and May. Stay on designated trails and keep dogs leashed so wildlife and other visitors are not disturbed.
Fishing, kayaking, and boating
Fishing and kayaking are available in designated locations. Check applicable Indiana fishing requirements, park rules, launch access, and current conditions before you go.

Winter activities
When conditions permit, visitors may enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, wildlife tracking, and winter walks. Prepare for cold, limited daylight, snow-covered hazards, and shelf ice. Never walk on Lake Michigan shelf ice.
Visiting Indiana Dunes National Park with dogs
Dogs are welcome on most park beaches and many outdoor areas, but rules vary by location and season.
- Keep pets leashed no longer than six feet, including on beaches and while swimming.
- Carry out pet waste and prevent pets from harassing wildlife.
- Pets are prohibited in the lifeguarded swimming area at West Beach from the Friday of Memorial Day weekend through the Monday of Labor Day weekend. Dogs may walk through that section to reach beaches on either side.
- Pets are restricted from Glenwood Dune Trail and Pinhook Bog Trail. At Pinhook Bog, ranger-led tours only are permitted; the Upland Trail permits leashed pets.
- Pets are not allowed in the Nature Play areas at the Douglas Center or within the Mather and Douglas loops of Dunewood.
- Temporary event restrictions may apply. Check signs and the NPS pets and service animals guidance.
Plan water, shade, and rest breaks, and never leave a pet unattended in a vehicle. Check current rules and terrain before choosing a route.
Recommended Free Tools
What to pack
For a dog day trip, pack a six-foot leash, waste bags, drinking water, a bowl, identification, and a towel. Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, suitable footwear, and clothing for both exposed beach and shaded trails. The NPS recommends plenty of water, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
Check product labels carefully, and do not apply human insect repellent to a pet unless the label specifically permits it or a veterinarian advises it.
Beach and trail safety
Take Lake Michigan rip currents seriously
Waves, rip currents, and water quality can change. Follow posted warnings, do not enter the water when high-bacteria signs are posted, and check current conditions on the day of your visit. If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore until clear rather than fighting directly against it. Review the official safety page before a swimming-focused visit.
Prepare for heat, sun, plants, and insects
Sand and exposed shorelines can feel much hotter than a wooded trail. Bring water, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Stay on trails and inspect people and pets after hiking.

Never walk on Lake Michigan shelf ice
The NPS warns visitors never to walk on shelf ice. Treat the frozen shoreline as a viewing area, not a walking surface, and keep dogs away from unstable ice.
Accessibility: plan for the specific destination
Accessibility varies across paved paths, beaches, steep dunes, soft sand, wetlands, and uneven forest trails. The NPS identifies accessible parking lots at West Beach, Lake View, and Dunbar; check current details for the particular route, facility, or beach access you need.
For accessibility questions or equipment needs, consult the NPS accessibility page and contact the park before arrival.
Fees, passes, and hours
The NPS fee page lists a $25 private-vehicle pass for 1–7 days and a $45 Indiana Dunes National Park annual pass. The annual pass applies to the national park only, not Indiana Dunes State Park. An America the Beautiful pass also covers qualifying federal lands under its terms. Verify current prices and pass conditions on the official fee page before traveling.
The NPS says visitors, including permit holders, need a valid entrance pass or receipt. Fee and access details can change, so check current park guidance before departure.
