Protein in canned tuna depends on the tuna type and how much drained fish you eat. USDA-linked reference data lists 19.44 g per 100 g of drained light tuna in water and 23.62 g per 100 g of drained white tuna in water; a USDA SR Legacy example lists 17 g per 3 oz (85 g) of drained light tuna. A can’s printed size alone is not enough to determine its protein.
For a specific product, use its Nutrition Facts label and drained edible weight. The figures below are reference values, not guarantees for every brand or can.
Protein in canned tuna at a glance
| Tuna and portion | Protein reference | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Light tuna in water, 100 g drained | 19.44 g | USDA-linked reference value presented by WhatYouEat. |
| White tuna in water, 100 g drained | 23.62 g | USDA-linked reference value presented by WhatYouEat. |
| Light tuna in water, 3 oz (85 g) drained | 17 g | USDA SR Legacy example. |
| Chunk light tuna, 1 oz (28 g) drained | 7 g | Representative USDA Foods in Schools sheet value; not a universal retail label. |
These values refer to drained tuna. Do not apply them directly to a can’s net weight, which may include packing liquid, or assume that a particular can size always contains a fixed amount of drained fish.
How much protein is in a serving of canned tuna?
For drained light tuna in water, the USDA SR Legacy example lists 17 g of protein per 3 oz (85 g). A USDA-linked reference lists 19.44 g per 100 g of drained light tuna in water. These are reference-food values, so a specific product’s label may differ.

For drained white tuna in water, the USDA-linked reference lists 23.62 g per 100 g. Keep the tuna type and portion clear when comparing protein figures; a value per 100 g cannot be compared directly with one per 3 oz without converting the serving sizes.
Protein by can size and type
There is no reliable universal protein total for a “small,” “standard,” or other nominal can size in the available references. The fish’s drained edible weight and type matter. Use the product label when available, or estimate from the drained weight and an appropriate reference value.

| Tuna type | Reference amount | Protein |
|---|---|---|
| Light tuna in water | 100 g drained | 19.44 g |
| White tuna in water | 100 g drained | 23.62 g |
| Light tuna in water | 3 oz (85 g) drained | 17 g |
The USDA-linked per-100-g figures are presented by WhatYouEat from USDA FoodData Central records. The 3 oz figure is from a USDA SR Legacy record. The USDA Foods in Schools representative product sheet gives 7 g per 1 oz (28 g) drained chunk light tuna; it is a food-service example, not a promise about retail cans.
How to calculate protein in your can
- Check the Nutrition Facts label. Note the protein per serving and the serving size.
- Check servings per container. Multiply protein per serving by the number of servings for the whole container, if the label provides that information.
- Use drained edible weight for a reference estimate. Do not substitute the can’s net weight if it includes liquid.
- Match the reference to the tuna type. For an estimate from the USDA-linked values, multiply 19.44 g per 100 g by the drained grams of light tuna, then divide by 100. For white tuna, use 23.62 g per 100 g in the same calculation.
For example, applying the light-tuna reference of 19.44 g per 100 g to 85 g gives about 16.5 g of protein. That calculation is close to the separate USDA SR Legacy example of 17 g per 85 g; neither figure guarantees the amount in every product.

Why protein amounts differ between cans
Tuna type
The cited USDA-linked references list different protein values for drained light and white tuna in water: 19.44 g and 23.62 g per 100 g, respectively. Compare like with like and use the type shown on the product.
Drained edible weight
A can’s net weight does not necessarily equal the weight of the drained fish. Packing liquid can contribute to the packaged weight, so do not multiply a drained-tuna value by the can’s net weight unless those weights refer to the same edible portion.
