They can hover and fly backward, feed on both nectar and insects, and enter torpor when conditions demand it. The facts below distinguish general traits from examples specific to the ruby-throated hummingbird.
Here are 14 remarkable facts about hummingbirds, with species-specific examples where the numbers differ.
1. Hummingbirds live only in the Western Hemisphere
All hummingbirds belong to the bird family Trochilidae and live naturally only in the Americas. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo describes nearly 340 species, ranging from southern Alaska to Tierra del Fuego and inhabiting environments from deserts to tropical forests and high elevations in the Andes.
North American examples include the ruby-throated, rufous, and broad-tailed hummingbirds. Central and South America are home to many more species.

2. The world’s smallest bird is a hummingbird
The bee hummingbird of Cuba weighs about 1.95 grams, according to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, making it the smallest living bird. Hummingbird size varies considerably: the Smithsonian gives a broad body-weight range of about 2 to 20 grams.
The bee hummingbird is an extreme example, not a typical size for every hummingbird.
3. Hummingbirds are the only vertebrates capable of sustained hovering
The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute describes hummingbirds as the only vertebrates capable of sustained hovering. Their wings generate lift on both the downstroke and the upstroke, as Smithsonian Gardens explains.
This wing action lets a hummingbird stay nearly stationary in front of a flower while feeding.

Hummingbirds can move backward and sideways as well as hover. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo also reports that they can fly upside down, though this is not their usual mode of travel.
These movements reflect the birds’ unusually precise control of their wings and body position.
5. Their wings beat dozens of times per second
Wingbeat rates vary by species and activity. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo reports these examples for ruby-throated hummingbirds:

| Activity | Approximate wingbeat rate | What it illustrates |
|---|---|---|
| Direct flight | About 70 beats per second | A reported rate during flight |
| Courtship dive | More than 200 beats per second | A much faster rate during a display maneuver |
These are ruby-throated hummingbird figures, not a universal rate for every species or type of flight. The rapid movement of the wings produces the familiar humming sound.

6. A ruby-throated hummingbird’s heart can beat more than 1,200 times per minute
The Smithsonian’s National Zoo reports that a ruby-throated hummingbird’s heart beats about 225 times per minute at rest and more than 1,200 times per minute in flight. These figures describe that species in different activity states, not all hummingbirds.
Such high energy demands help explain why hummingbirds feed frequently and conserve energy when conditions call for it.
7. Their jewel-like throat colors come from light
Many male hummingbirds have a specialized throat patch called a gorget. Its reflective feathers can appear dull or dark from one angle and flash bright colors when they catch the light.
This effect, called iridescence, depends on the structure of the feathers and the angle of illumination. A bird can appear to change color as it moves.
8. Their tongues collect nectar by wicking
A hummingbird’s long, tube-like tongue helps it collect nectar. The Smithsonian describes the process as wicking: the bird’s tongue draws nectar inward rather than acting only as a rigid straw that depends on suction.
Many flowers visited by hummingbirds are tubular, with nectar and long stamens that can deposit pollen on a visiting bird. Although some tropical relationships are tightly matched, the Smithsonian notes that most hummingbirds are not highly specialized to particular flowers.

9. Nectar is only part of the diet
Nectar supplies energy, but hummingbirds also eat small insects and spiders. The Smithsonian notes that they catch small flying insects during breeding season and feed insects to nestlings; National Geographic’s ruby-throated hummingbird overview also describes insects and spiders in the diet.
Insects are part of a hummingbird’s food supply, so a feeder is not a substitute for healthy habitat.

Hummingbirds can enter torpor, a deep, sleep-like state that slows metabolic functions and maintains a much lower body temperature. According to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, torpor can occur on any night when temperature and food conditions demand it.
Torpor is an energy-saving state, not long-term hibernation or ordinary nightly sleep.
11. Some ruby-throated hummingbirds cross the Gulf of Mexico nonstop
The Smithsonian reports that migratory ruby-throated hummingbirds can fly across the Gulf of Mexico for 18 to 20 straight hours. Stored fat fuels the flight, and winds can help.
This is a species-specific example, not a migration pattern shared by every hummingbird. Some hummingbirds migrate, while others remain in the same general area or make shorter movements.
12. Hummingbirds vary in size and range
Hummingbird species differ greatly in body size and geographic range. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo gives a broad weight range of about 2 to 20 grams and describes the family’s range as extending from southern Alaska to Tierra del Fuego.

That variety is one reason a measurement or migration example from one species should not be treated as typical of all hummingbirds.
13. Female hummingbirds care for eggs and chicks
The Smithsonian describes hummingbirds as mostly unsociable and notes that males and females do not form a pair bond after mating. Females care for the eggs and chicks alone.
A female seen tending a nest should not be expected to have a mate nearby. Observe nests from a distance and avoid disturbing the birds.

14. Hummingbirds pollinate flowers—and defend feeding areas
As hummingbirds visit flowers for nectar, pollen can be deposited on their bodies and transferred between blooms. Many flowers they use have features such as tubular shapes, nectar, and long stamens that help bring bird and pollen into contact.
Hummingbirds may also chase one another around valuable nectar resources. Smithsonian describes them as mostly unsociable and notes repeated chases around feeding areas.
How to watch hummingbirds responsibly
Grow flowering plants suited to your region and avoid unnecessary pesticide use to support both nectar sources and insect prey. A feeder can be a way to observe hummingbirds in a garden, but it is not required and does not replace habitat.
If you use a feeder, follow reliable local guidance for preparing nectar and cleaning it. Keep feeders clean and remove one if its contents appear spoiled or contaminated.
