To stop a dog’s bleeding nail, keep your dog still, wrap the paw in clean gauze or a small clean towel, and hold steady pressure. For bleeding from a broken nail, use a styptic pencil, silver nitrate stick, or cauterizing powder if available. Keep your dog from licking or disturbing the injury. A badly torn nail, heavy or ongoing bleeding, or significant pain needs veterinary advice.
Most bleeding caused by trimming into the quick is minor. A nail that is badly torn or broken may need veterinary treatment; do not assume damaged nail should be removed at home.
What to do when your dog’s nail is bleeding
Follow these steps for a small bleed caused by nail trimming or a minor nail injury:
- Stay calm and keep both of you safe. A painful, frightened dog may bite, even if normally friendly. Get help gently restraining your dog if possible, and keep your hands away from the dog’s mouth.
- Apply steady pressure. Wrap the paw in clean gauze or a small clean towel and hold constant pressure. Avoid lifting it repeatedly to check. VCA says paw bleeding should stop in 5–10 minutes.
- Use a styptic product for a broken nail. If the source is a broken nail, VCA advises applying a styptic pencil, silver nitrate stick, or cauterizing powder. Follow the product directions.
- Use a temporary alternative if needed. If you have no styptic product, VCA lists baking powder, cornstarch, flour, or pressing the nail tip into a bar of soap as alternatives for a minor bleed.
- Prevent licking and disturbance. Keep your dog from licking or chewing the paw while you monitor the injury or arrange veterinary care.
If bleeding is significant, recurs, or does not stop with pressure and appropriate styptic treatment, contact a veterinary professional.

How long should you apply pressure?
Hold steady, continuous pressure. VCA says bleeding from a paw should stop in 5–10 minutes. For a broken nail, VCA advises applying a styptic product if bleeding has not stopped after 5–10 minutes of pressure. These instructions concern their stated contexts; they are not a single guaranteed cutoff for every nail injury.
Do not repeatedly lift the gauze to check. If bleeding continues, seek veterinary advice rather than repeatedly disturbing the injury.
What can you use if you do not have styptic powder?
For a minor bleed, VCA lists baking powder, cornstarch, flour, or the tip of the nail pressed into a bar of soap as alternatives when a styptic product is unavailable. These are temporary measures, not a substitute for veterinary care if bleeding is heavy or persistent, or the nail is badly damaged. See VCA’s first-aid guidance.
For a broken nail, VCA recommends a styptic pencil, silver nitrate stick, or cauterizing powder. Follow the product directions and keep your dog from licking or disturbing the injury.

When a bleeding nail needs veterinary care
Contact a veterinarian if bleeding does not stop after pressure and appropriate styptic treatment, or if it recurs. The time guidance depends on the injury: VCA advises pressure for a broken nail and styptic treatment if bleeding has not stopped after 5–10 minutes; its 10–15-minute emergency threshold applies to bleeding from a foot-pad injury, not all nail injuries.
Seek urgent veterinary care for heavy or rapidly continuing bleeding. VCA identifies spurting blood, blood that quickly pools, or a bandage soaked within minutes as causes for alarm. Pale or white gums and rapid breathing after substantial blood loss can be signs of shock and need urgent help.
Seek veterinary advice for a badly torn nail, significant pain or lameness, a nail that may need removal, or ongoing or recurrent bleeding. When unsure about the injury, call your veterinarian.
What to do about a broken or torn nail
A clipped quick and a torn nail are not the same problem. A torn or broken nail may expose painful tissue and continue to catch on surfaces.

Why a dog’s nail bleeds
The inner portion of a dog’s nail is called the quick. It contains blood vessels and nerves. Cutting into it causes bleeding. A nail can also bleed when it breaks or tears.
If you are unsure how to trim your dog’s nails safely, ask your veterinarian or veterinary technician for a lesson. The American Kennel Club’s FAQ addresses what to do if you accidentally cut the quick.

What not to do
- Do not repeatedly lift the gauze to check the nail.
- Do not assume a damaged nail should be removed at home. Most damaged nail removal is best left to a veterinarian.
- Do not let your dog lick or disturb the injury.
- Do not wait if bleeding is heavy, persistent, or recurring or your dog has significant pain or lameness.
This is general first aid, not a diagnosis. A veterinarian should assess heavy or persistent bleeding, a badly torn nail, significant pain, or other concerning signs.
