Jennie is a realistic robotic puppy developed by Tombot to offer comfort and companionship, especially to people who cannot safely or practically keep a live pet. Tombot describes touch, voice-command, movement, and light sensors; a CES 2026 report also described puppy sounds, tail movement, and a detectable heartbeat in a demonstration.

Jennie is intended as a companion, not a proven treatment, service animal, or replacement for professional care. Product features and health-related benefits should be treated as company descriptions or reported demonstration details unless independently established.

What is Jennie?

Jennie is a robotic puppy being developed by Tombot. The company says its founder, Tom Stevens, was inspired by his mother Nancy’s dementia and the difficulty of keeping her dog safely as her condition progressed.

Tombot describes Jennie as a companion for people facing dementia-related symptoms and other circumstances that make live-pet care difficult. The company’s 2021 blog recounts the origin story; its account is a company-published description, not independent evidence of health benefits.

Tombot says Jim Henson’s Creature Shop contributed artistic design services to Jennie’s realistic appearance and texture. The company’s 2022 SEC filing describes a soft, lifelike appearance and behaviors intended to emulate a live puppy.

These descriptions explain the product’s design goals. They do not establish that Jennie treats a medical condition or has regulatory clearance as a medical device.

How Jennie responds to people

Tombot’s 2022 SEC filing lists sensors for touch, voice commands, movement, and light. WTOP’s January 2026 CES report described voice, touch, and movement responses, puppy sounds, tail movement, and a detectable heartbeat in the Jennies demonstrated there. Treat the latter details as reported demonstration features, not a guarantee about every production unit.

WTOP described Jennie as intended for lap-based interaction rather than roaming the floor. The report said this design choice was intended to avoid trip hazards and support interaction while seated; it is not an independent safety certification.

Tombot’s filing also describes monitoring and feedback related to Sundowning Syndrome as a product feature claim. That description does not show that the feature is effective or that Jennie is approved to diagnose or treat a condition.

Can a robotic puppy help with dementia or loneliness?

Tombot presents Jennie as a companion intended for people facing dementia-related symptoms and other health adversities. An animal-like presence may appeal to someone who enjoys holding or interacting with a pet, but the research reviewed here does not establish that Jennie reduces dementia symptoms, anxiety, depression, loneliness, or pain.

Tombot’s 2021 blog recounts founder Tom Stevens’s memory that his mother said, “Jennie is helping me relax.” This is a company-published personal anecdote, not a measured clinical outcome. The reviewed sources do not establish an independent clinical trial demonstrating Jennie’s efficacy or FDA clearance.

It is most accurate to describe Jennie as a companion robot, not a proven therapy. It should not replace psychotherapy, medication, crisis care, a service animal, or professional caregiving.

Who is Jennie intended for?

People facing dementia-related symptoms

Tombot identifies dementia-related symptoms among Jennie’s intended use cases. A robotic companion may be worth considering for someone who enjoys animal-like interaction but cannot safely care for a live pet. Individual preferences vary, and the available sources do not establish a clinical benefit.

People who cannot keep a live pet

Jennie may interest people whose living arrangements, health, or other circumstances make a live pet impractical. Consider the person’s preferences and care needs rather than assuming a robotic animal will suit everyone.

People seeking an animal-like companion

Someone experiencing loneliness or another health challenge may be drawn to a responsive robotic animal. The reviewed sources do not establish that Jennie will produce a particular mental-health outcome.

What Jennie does not do

The reviewed materials do not establish Jennie as:

  • a service dog, guide dog, or mobility-assistance animal;
  • a robot that walks around the home or navigates independently;
  • a diagnostic device or FDA-cleared medical treatment;
  • a proven treatment for dementia, anxiety, depression, loneliness, or pain;
  • a substitute for therapy, medication, crisis support, or professional care.

WTOP reported that Jennie is designed for lap-based interaction rather than roaming the floor. A robotic puppy also does not provide the full experience or responsibilities of a living dog.

Confirm those details and follow Tombot’s current manufacturer instructions before buying or using the product.

Jennie compared with a real dog

Consideration Jennie Live dog
Interaction Tombot describes a robotic puppy with touch, voice-command, movement, and light sensors; CES reporting described additional demonstration features. Natural interaction with an animal, which varies by dog.
Mobility WTOP described Jennie as designed for lap-based interaction, not roaming the floor. Can move around and may need walks and exercise.
Daily care Not a live animal, but current care, charging, and maintenance requirements should be confirmed with Tombot. Needs food, water, exercise, grooming, and veterinary care.
Assistance tasks Not established as a service animal or task-assistance device. A specially trained service dog may perform trained tasks.
Health-related benefit Independent clinical efficacy is not established in the sources reviewed. Benefits and suitability depend on the individual and the dog; no particular outcome is guaranteed.

Jennie is designed to offer animal-like companionship without being a live pet. It cannot reproduce the full relationship, activity, or care responsibilities involved in living with a dog.

Is Jennie available to buy?

WTOP reported at CES in January 2026 that Tombot expected to ship Jennie later in 2026 to more than 18,000 preorder customers. That was a dated company expectation reported by WTOP, not confirmation of current shipments or general retail availability.

WTOP reported a $1,500 price point at CES 2026. The research reviewed here did not establish a current retail checkout page, confirmed shipping date, geographic terms, or current Amazon listing. Check directly with Tombot for current price, availability, reservation conditions, and support before paying or making care plans around the product.

Questions to ask before choosing Jennie

Before considering Jennie for someone else, ask:

  1. Will the person enjoy a robotic animal? Preferences differ, so consider the person’s response to robotic pets or other animal-like companions.
  2. Is the product suitable for their care setting? Ask the care team or facility about the person’s needs and the setting’s requirements.
  3. Who will handle setup and maintenance? Confirm current manufacturer guidance for setup, charging, cleaning, and support.
  4. What are the current price and availability? Verify them directly with Tombot rather than relying on a dated report or third-party listing.
  5. What is the person’s health-related need? Involve a qualified professional when the concern requires clinical assessment or care.

Could Jennie replace anxiety care?

No. The sources reviewed do not establish Jennie as an anxiety treatment or clinically proven therapy. Anxiety can require assessment and care from a doctor or mental-health professional.

A companion robot may be considered as one part of a broader support plan, but it should not delay professional help when someone is experiencing severe distress, self-harm thoughts, confusion, or a sudden change in behavior.
