A three-year-old in Charlotte, North Carolina, told her parents she heard “monsters” in her bedroom and pointed toward the wall. The family later discovered a honeybee colony inside it; a beekeeper used a thermal camera to help locate the hive.
Saylor Class’s mother, Ashley Massis Class, said the family initially thought the child’s reports might be imagination. She also described sleep disruption and an incoming sibling as part of what the family was considering at the time. Those were the family’s interpretations, not an independent clinical assessment.
The “monsters” were behind the wall
The family lived in a more-than-100-year-old home in Charlotte. Ashley said bees had entered through a small opening near the attic above Saylor’s bedroom. After early inspections did not locate the colony, beekeeper Curtis Collins used a thermal camera to identify a large hive area in the wall.
The camera helped locate the hive; it did not provide an exact bee count. Collins opened the wall and removed bees over successive visits.

Published reports gave differing estimates as extraction continued. The Washington Post reported Ashley’s estimate that the beekeeper had caught between 50,000 and 65,000 bees by the time she spoke with the paper, along with about 100 pounds of honeycomb. CBS News and LAist/NPR reported about 50,000 bees, while Sky News later relayed a figure of 60,000 from Ashley. These are family-reported estimates at different stages, not an independently verified final census.
A difficult removal—and extensive damage
Reports said the bees were removed in successive visits and taken for relocation. The Washington Post reported that the beekeeper was still returning to check for bees in the weeks after the discovery. Contemporary coverage described relocation plans or relocation to a sanctuary; the available reporting does not establish the colony’s current status.

The family described honey affecting the wall and electrical wiring, among other repair work. Ashley estimated the damage and repairs at about $20,000 and told The Washington Post that her family’s insurance would not cover the loss. These are her account and estimate of her own situation, not a general statement about homeowners’ insurance.

How the beekeeper found the hive
After early inspections did not find the colony, beekeeper Curtis Collins used a thermal camera to identify a large hive area in the wall. The camera served as an aid to locating the hive before the wall was opened; the reports do not describe it as a way to count every bee.
What to do if you find bees in a wall
This story is not a do-it-yourself removal guide. If you suspect a colony in a wall, keep children and others away from the area and contact a qualified local professional experienced with colonies inside structures. Ask what the removal involves, including how the provider will check the area after extraction and address comb left inside the wall.

The practical lesson behind the story
