When choosing natural dog food, first check the package’s nutritional adequacy statement and make sure it covers your dog’s life stage. “Natural” is a labeling term, not proof that a food is safer or nutritionally better. Compare the exact recipe, feeding directions, and calories, and ask your veterinarian about a diet for a medical condition.
What “natural” means on a dog food label
The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) describes “natural” as a broad labeling term. AAFCO cautions that it does not establish greater safety: “There is no requirement or statement that natural feeds or ingredients are safer than those produced by a chemically synthetic process.”
Some labels say “natural with added vitamins, minerals and trace nutrients.” That wording indicates synthetic ingredients in an otherwise natural product. In either case, the natural claim does not tell you whether the food is complete and balanced for your dog.
Start with the nutritional adequacy statement
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says a complete-and-balanced food is intended to be fed as a pet’s sole diet. The claim must be supported by an AAFCO nutrient profile or an AAFCO feeding trial. FDA explains: “If this statement includes the phrase ‘complete and balanced,’ then the product is intended to be fed as a pet’s sole diet and should be nutritionally balanced.”

Read the statement on the package for the exact food you are considering. Match it to your dog’s life stage: growth and reproduction and adult maintenance have different nutritional requirements. Do not assume that an adult-maintenance food is suitable for a puppy, or that a treat, topper, or supplement can serve as the sole diet.
Compare foods using the label
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact recipe and format | Confirm the product and recipe on the package rather than relying on a general brand description. |
| Adequacy statement and life stage | Check whether the food is complete and balanced for the life stage it claims to cover. |
| Calories and feeding directions | Use these to assess portions. AAFCO says feeding directions are guidelines and may need adjustment for an individual dog. |
| Ingredients and natural wording | Read the full label. Ingredient preferences do not replace the adequacy statement. |
| Moisture and guaranteed analysis | Do not compare wet and dry guaranteed-analysis percentages as though they use the same moisture basis. FDA explains that dry-matter conversion is needed when products differ substantially in moisture. |
| Your dog’s condition | A medical condition may affect which food is appropriate; seek veterinary advice rather than relying on a natural claim. |
How to choose a food
- Identify your dog’s life stage. Look for a package statement that covers the dog’s needs, including growth or reproduction where relevant.
- Confirm the food is meant to be a complete diet. Treats and supplements generally are not intended to be fed as the sole diet. Check whether a product is a complete food or a supplemental item.
- Review calories and feeding directions. Use the package guidance as a starting point and adjust for your individual dog as appropriate.
- Compare the exact products. Check recipe, format, adequacy statement, ingredient list, and moisture before drawing conclusions from label claims.
- Ask your veterinarian when health needs are involved. Do not use “natural” as a substitute for advice about a dog with a medical condition.
Product examples and what remains to verify
Available research identifies a small number of product leads, not a verified or ranked list of eight foods. Purina’s label document for Beneful Originals with Farm-Raised Beef Natural Dog Food with Added Vitamins, Minerals & Nutrients says it is formulated for adult maintenance. A manufacturer label document for Beyond Wild Prey-Inspired Beef, Liver & Lamb Recipe Natural with Added Vitamins & Minerals also says it is formulated for adult maintenance, but that document is older.

- Wide, Stable Shape: Designed to sit steadily during everyday meals
- Easy to Clean: Smooth stainless steel surface rinses clean and is dishwasher safe

These label documents do not establish that either recipe is currently available or that its current package wording is unchanged. Verify the current product page and package before relying on a product name, recipe, or life-stage claim. Purina’s natural-food overview describes its own brands and nutritional-standards position; that is a company claim, not an independent endorsement.
