The verified dental options here are Purina DentaLife and Canine Greenies Dental Chews. The available research does not verify current training or soft-treat products, so this guide explains how to choose those rather than making unsupported product recommendations.

How to choose training treats
Training rewards may be given repeatedly, so compare current product labels for calories per piece, piece size, texture, ingredients, and feeding directions. The research available for this guide does not verify named training treats or support claims that any particular product is small, soft, or low-calorie.

How to choose soft rewards
Do not infer texture, calorie content, or suitability from a product name or marketing category. Check the package or current manufacturer page for those details. A soft reward is not automatically appropriate for a dog with painful teeth, swallowing difficulty, or a prescribed diet.
How to choose a dental chew
VOHC acceptance is specific to the product and its stated plaque or tartar claim. The council reviews data submitted by manufacturers; it says it does not test products itself. Acceptance does not establish that a product is superior in flavor or nutrition, safe for every dog, or a substitute for brushing and veterinary care.
- Find the exact product name and claim on the current VOHC accepted-products list.
- Choose the size specified for your dog’s body weight and check age or weight exclusions on the package.
- Observe your dog while chewing and follow the manufacturer’s directions.
- Arrange periodic veterinary examinations of your dog’s mouth and teeth. VOHC describes brushing as the gold standard for oral hygiene.
Purina DentaLife: check size and calories
Purina’s product pages specify different directions for its large and small/medium DentaLife chews. The large product is intended for adult dogs 40 pounds and over and lists 100 kcal per piece. The small/medium product is intended for adult dogs 20–40 pounds, lists 63 kcal per piece, and is not for puppies under one year or adult dogs under 15 pounds. These are manufacturer-reported details; confirm the current package before feeding.

- Highly Palatable with natural pork liver base
- 500 treats per bag!
- Only 1.5 calories per treat
- Clean ingredients with no corn, soy or artificial flavors
- Made with natural bacon
Purina says its DentaLife products should not exceed 10% of a dog’s daily calorie requirement, with food reduced accordingly. Treat that as manufacturer guidance, and follow your dog’s individual feeding plan.
Canine Greenies Dental Chews
The VOHC accepted-products list identifies Canine Greenies Dental Chews with plaque and tartar claims and lists five sizes. Check the current list and package to ensure the exact product and size are appropriate; do not assume a similarly named product has the same listing or claim.
What VOHC acceptance means
VOHC’s seal relates to a stated plaque and/or tartar claim when a product is used as directed. The council reviews submitted evidence against its standards and says it does not test products itself. Its listing is not a general endorsement of a product’s nutrition, taste, or suitability for every dog.
Rank #3

Keeping treats within the feeding plan
Purina advises that treats should not exceed 10% of a dog’s total daily calorie requirement. Include dental chews, training rewards, and other extras in the same total, and adjust the main food as appropriate. Ask your veterinarian for help setting an individual calorie target, especially if your dog has a medical condition or a prescribed diet.
