The Exotic Shorthair is a Persian-type companion cat with a round head, large eyes, compact build, and dense, plush short coat. Its coat generally takes less grooming than a Persian’s long coat, but the breed is not maintenance-free: plan for regular combing, eye care, weight monitoring, and attention to breathing and heat tolerance.

What is an Exotic Shorthair?
The Exotic Shorthair was developed to retain the Persian’s rounded structure and companionable qualities while having a shorter, dense coat. TICA groups Exotics with Persians and Himalayans; CFA currently calls the breed “Exotic.”
CFA says West Coast Persian breeders crossed Persians with American Shorthairs in the 1950s, and that CFA established the breed in 1966. TICA describes additional early outcrosses, including Burmese and Russian Blue. The aim became a Persian-like cat with a short, dense coat.
TICA uses the informal nickname “the lazy man’s Persian.” It should not be taken as a care guarantee: the coat still sheds and needs regular combing, and the cat may need attention to its eyes, weight, and facial structure.

Appearance and physical characteristics
Registry descriptions emphasize a broad, round head, large round eyes, short nose, small ears, short substantial body, thick legs, and short tail. Dense plush fur over a muscular, heavily boned build gives the breed its rounded appearance. CFA’s standard calls for good muscle tone without evidence of obesity.
The short facial profile is a defining feature, but prospective owners should consider breathing and eye comfort. GCCF cautions that brachycephalic features should not be taken to extremes.
Exotic Shorthairs come in many colors and patterns, including:
- Solid colors
- Tabby patterns
- Bicolor
- Calico and tortoiseshell
- Shaded and smoke patterns
- Pointed or Himalayan patterns
Eye color is partly associated with color and pattern division. Appearance alone cannot confirm health, temperament, pedigree quality, or responsible breeding.

Breed descriptions characterize the Exotic Shorthair as gentle, quiet, affectionate, and people-oriented. Many are also described as playful and inquisitive, sometimes more so than Persians. These are breed tendencies, not guarantees about an individual cat.
An Exotic may enjoy toys, watching birds from a window, or settling near family members. Some individuals are independent or dislike being picked up. If choosing an adult cat, ask about its handling tolerance, activity level, and experience with children and other animals.
Living with children, cats, and dogs
An Exotic Shorthair may fit well into a family home when children handle cats gently and give them space. Some live successfully with other cats or dogs; introductions should be gradual:

- Give the new cat a separate room with food, water, a litter box, hiding places, and scratching surfaces.
- Let the animals become familiar with one another’s scent before direct contact.
- Use short, supervised meetings and provide escape routes or elevated resting places.
- Separate them if either shows escalating fear, aggression, or stress.
Do not make a cat tolerate chasing, rough handling, forced cuddling, or persistent attention from a dog. Compatibility depends on the individuals and how they are introduced.

Offer daily opportunities for movement, even if your cat prefers lounging. Wand toys, lightweight chase toys, food puzzles, scratching posts, and window perches can provide exercise and mental stimulation. Several short play sessions may work better than one prolonged session.
Let the cat set the pace. A short face, excess weight, hot weather, or an underlying respiratory problem may reduce exercise and heat tolerance. Avoid strenuous activity in hot or poorly ventilated conditions.
Open-mouth breathing is a medical emergency in cats. Seek emergency veterinary care if your cat is breathing with its mouth open, struggling to breathe, collapsing, or showing blue- or gray-tinged gums.
Grooming an Exotic Shorthair
The coat is shorter than a Persian’s but dense enough to shed and retain loose hair. CFA says weekly combing is sufficient for most of the year, with additional care during shedding season. A steel or Teflon-coated comb is one option; adjust the routine to your cat’s coat and shedding. Neglected coats may mat.

Keep sessions brief at first, reward cooperation, and stop if the cat becomes distressed. While grooming, check for skin changes, wounds, parasites, painful tangles, or unusual lumps.
Face and eye care
Short-faced cats may experience tear overflow or eye irritation. For superficial debris, gently wipe around the eyes with a clean, warm-water-rinsed cloth, using a clean area for each eye. Do not rub the eyeball or use medicated products unless a veterinarian instructs you to.

Contact a veterinarian for redness, cloudiness, swelling, persistent discharge, squinting, a closed eye, obvious discomfort, or pawing at the eye. Do not assume persistent irritation is merely cosmetic.
Ears and nails
Check the ears periodically for odor, discharge, redness, swelling, or unusually heavy debris. Ask a veterinary professional before putting cleaner into an irritated or painful ear.
Trim only the sharp nail tip and avoid the quick, the pink area containing blood vessels and nerves. If your cat struggles or you cannot see the quick clearly, ask a veterinarian or qualified groomer for help.
Dental care
Introduce a cat-formulated toothbrush and toothpaste gradually; never use human toothpaste. Home brushing supports but does not replace professional dental examinations.
Strong mouth odor, inflamed gums, loose teeth, drooling, dropping food, or difficulty chewing warrants veterinary assessment.
Exotic Shorthair health concerns
These are considerations to discuss and monitor, not predictions that every Exotic Shorthair will develop disease. Ask a veterinarian about your individual cat and review its health history.

Brachycephalic airway concerns
The short facial structure can be associated with narrowed nostrils, an elongated soft palate, or a small trachea. These features can restrict breathing and reduce exercise and heat tolerance. Overweight, older, or allergic cats may be more affected.

Discuss noisy breathing, frequent gagging, exercise intolerance, heat distress, or unusually slow recovery after activity with a veterinarian. Do not dismiss persistent breathing noise as automatically normal for a flat-faced cat.
Polycystic kidney disease and breeder screening
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is associated with Persian lines and related breeds. GCCF recommends testing breeding cats for PKD and advises buyers to obtain clear PKD certificates for a kitten’s parents. Ask to see documentation rather than relying on a verbal assurance. GCCF also recommends testing breeding cats for PRA(pd). These tests do not guarantee that a cat will have no health problems.
Eyes, weight, and general monitoring
Facial anatomy may contribute to tear overflow or eye irritation. Excess weight can compound breathing, heat-tolerance, and mobility concerns. Ask your veterinarian to assess body condition rather than relying on a scale number alone.
Arrange veterinary care for changes in appetite, drinking, urination, stool, activity, breathing, eye appearance, or grooming behavior. Do not automatically attribute a sudden change to a cat being naturally quiet.

Feed a complete and balanced cat food appropriate for the cat’s life stage, and provide fresh water. Discuss calorie needs and portions with a veterinarian, particularly if weight gain is a concern. Weight gain can worsen breathing concerns in flat-faced cats; do not start a weight-loss program, therapeutic diet, or supplements without veterinary guidance.
A practical daily-care checklist includes:
- Fresh water and appropriately portioned food
- A clean, accessible litter box
- Scratching surfaces and safe places to rest or hide
- Interactive play and opportunities to move
- Observation of breathing, eyes, appetite, urination, stool, and activity
- Regular combing and periodic nail, ear, and dental checks
Is an Exotic Shorthair right for you?
This breed may suit someone who wants a people-oriented cat with a Persian-like appearance but a shorter coat. It may fit a quieter home or apartment if the household can provide respectful handling, enrichment, and routine health monitoring.
It may be a poor fit if you want a maintenance-free cat, dislike shedding, expect a cat to tolerate constant carrying, or cannot provide a comfortable environment during hot weather. A short coat does not remove the need to consider facial structure, weight, and heat tolerance.

Choosing or adopting an Exotic Shorthair
TICA offers breed information, breeder-finding resources, regional clubs, and rescue pathways. A directory is a starting point, not a guarantee about an individual breeder. Whether adopting or buying, ask questions and verify the answers:
- Can you review veterinary records and vaccination history?
- What health testing was performed on the parents, and can you see documented results, including clear PKD certificates?
- Have the parents or relatives had breathing, eye, kidney, or dental problems?
- Can you visit the home or facility, or receive a meaningful live video tour?
- How are kittens socialized and adults treated?
- What does the contract say about registration, health guarantees, returns, and rehoming?
- Will the breeder take the cat back or help rehome it if circumstances change?
Be cautious of anyone who refuses reasonable questions, will not provide records, pressures you to pay quickly, or presents extreme facial features as more important than functional health. Verify claims about testing with documentation.

Are Exotic Shorthairs low-maintenance cats?
