Where Is the Caudal Fin on a Fish?

The caudal fin is the tail fin at the rear of a fish, attached behind the narrower caudal peduncle. Its shape varies among species, but it helps propel the fish and contributes to maneuvering.

The caudal fin is a fish’s tail fin, located at the posterior, or rear, end of the body. It sits behind the narrower caudal peduncle and helps propel the fish forward as it sweeps from side to side.

How to find the caudal fin

You can identify it without knowing the fish’s species:

  1. Start at the head and locate the eyes, mouth, and gill cover.
  2. Follow the body toward the rear.
  3. Look for the body to narrow into a short connecting region.
  4. The fin attached to the end of that narrow region is the caudal fin, commonly called the tail fin.

The narrow connecting region is the caudal peduncle. It is part of the fish’s body, not the fin itself. Muscles in and around the caudal peduncle move the tail from side to side, while the caudal fin pushes against the water.

See it on a diagram: A fish anatomy poster or labeled fish anatomy chart can make the caudal fin, caudal peduncle, dorsal fin, and anal fin easier to distinguish. A single chart may not represent every fish species or tail shape.

What does the caudal fin do?

The caudal fin is one of the fish’s main propulsive structures. Side-to-side movement of the body and tail pushes water backward and helps move the fish forward. The tail also contributes to turning and maneuvering.

It does not work alone. Depending on the species and the movement required, the pectoral, pelvic, dorsal, and anal fins may help with steering, braking, balance, and stability. In many fish, the caudal peduncle supplies much of the muscular force that swings the caudal fin.

Caudal fin versus other fins

Fin or structure Where it is What to remember
Caudal fin At the rear end of the fish The tail fin; helps provide forward thrust and maneuverability
Dorsal fin Along the top or back Not the tail; often helps with balance and stability
Anal fin Along the underside near the rear Located below the body, in front of the caudal fin
Caudal peduncle Between the main body and caudal fin The narrowed body section connecting the fish to its tail fin

The caudal fin, dorsal fin, and anal fin are all median fins, meaning they lie along the fish’s central midline and are not present as left-and-right pairs. Pectoral and pelvic fins, by contrast, are paired fins.

Do all fish have the same-shaped caudal fin?

No. Tail shape varies considerably among fish. Common forms include rounded, truncated, forked, and lunate, or crescent-shaped, tails. Tail shape is associated with different combinations of acceleration, maneuverability, speed, and sustained swimming.

  • Rounded tails are common in fish that need controlled movement and maneuverability.
  • Truncated tails have a relatively straight or squared-off rear edge.
  • Forked tails are divided at the rear and occur in many active swimmers.
  • Lunate tails are crescent-shaped and are characteristic of powerful, sustained open-water swimmers such as tunas.

These are general relationships rather than rules for identifying every species. A tail’s performance also depends on the fish’s body shape, muscles, fins, and swimming behavior.

What about sharks and sturgeons?

Sharks and sturgeons still have a caudal fin at the rear of the body, but its upper and lower lobes may be different sizes. A caudal fin with unequal lobes is called heterocercal.

This is one reason it is more precise to say that the caudal fin is the fin attached to the caudal peduncle at the posterior end of the body—not simply that it is a symmetrical “tail.” Fish species differ in tail symmetry, supporting structures, and swimming mechanics.

What is the caudal fin made of?

In many bony fish, the visible caudal fin is supported by fin rays. Internally, the base of the tail connects with the end of the vertebral column and related supporting skeletal structures. The thin, visible fin is distinct from the muscular caudal peduncle immediately in front of it.

For ordinary identification, you do not need to inspect these internal structures. If you can locate the fish’s head and follow the body to the narrowed peduncle, the fin beyond it is the caudal fin.

How to identify it on a pet fish

In an aquarium, watch the fish from the side as it swims:

  1. The fin at the very back, behind the narrowed tail base, is the caudal fin.
  2. The fin on top is the dorsal fin.
  3. The fin underneath near the rear is the anal fin.
  4. The paired fins near the sides of the body are pectoral fins; paired fins farther underneath are pelvic fins.

A fish may hold its fins close to the body, fan them out, or move them rapidly, so the outline can change while it swims. The location of the caudal fin remains the same: it is attached at the rear of the caudal peduncle.

Why the word “caudal” is used

Caudal means relating to the tail or rear region. In fish anatomy, the term therefore describes the fin at the back of the body. “Caudal fin” is the technical term; “tail fin” is the everyday term.

FAQ

Is the caudal fin the same as the tail?

In everyday fish descriptions, yes: the caudal fin is usually called the tail fin. Anatomically, however, the caudal peduncle is the narrowed body section before the fin, so the peduncle and the visible caudal fin are distinct structures.

Is the caudal fin on top of a fish?

No. The caudal fin is at the rear end. The fin on top is the dorsal fin, while the anal fin is on the underside near the rear.

Do fish use the caudal fin to swim forward?

Generally, yes. Side-to-side movement of the body and caudal fin pushes water backward and helps propel the fish forward. Other fins contribute to steering, balance, braking, and maneuvering.

Are shark tails caudal fins?

Yes. A shark’s rear tail fin is a caudal fin, although its upper and lower lobes are often unequal. This type of tail is called heterocercal.

The Bottom Line

The caudal fin is the tail fin at the rear of a fish. It is attached behind the caudal peduncle and helps the fish move forward, turn, and maneuver.
