No ten specific raw dog foods can be named as verified best picks from the available research: current package labels, life-stage statements, formulas, and recall status were not checked. To choose a complete-and-balanced raw food, inspect the exact product’s nutritional adequacy statement and match it to your dog’s life stage; that claim does not mean the food is pathogen-free. Frozen and freeze-dried raw food still require careful handling and sanitation.
Use this guide to assess candidate products rather than treating brand names or marketing claims as endorsements. Before buying, verify the current label and lot-specific notices, and ask your veterinarian whether a raw diet is appropriate for your dog and household.
What “complete and balanced” means
FDA says a product labeled “complete and balanced” is intended as the pet’s sole diet. Check the exact product’s nutritional adequacy statement for whether it meets an applicable AAFCO nutrient profile or was substantiated through an AAFCO-procedure feeding trial. FDA guidance says that seeing one of these references on a label provides better assurance that the claim is valid.
Match the statement to your dog’s life stage. FDA describes separate nutrient profiles for growth and reproduction and for adult maintenance; an adult-maintenance food should not be assumed appropriate for growth or reproduction. A nutritional adequacy statement addresses nutritional suitability, not pathogen safety or suitability for every individual dog.

How to compare raw dog foods
- Read the exact product label. Find the full nutritional adequacy statement and check whether it identifies an AAFCO nutrient profile or feeding-trial substantiation.
- Match the life stage. Confirm that the statement covers your dog’s needs, especially for growth or reproduction. Do not infer suitability from a brand name or a different recipe.
- Review label transparency. Check the ingredient list, guaranteed analysis, calorie information, feeding directions, manufacturer identity, and formula or lot identification.
- Compare nutrients fairly. Guaranteed-analysis values are generally stated as-fed, while AAFCO nutrient profiles use a dry-matter basis. FDA provides a conversion method for comparing foods with different moisture levels; do not rank raw foods by protein percentages alone.
- Check current safety notices. Search FDA notices and the manufacturer’s notices for the specific product and lot. Verify the formula and lot information rather than relying on an old product page or a broad brand-level claim.
- Consider practical fit. Once label and life-stage suitability are established, consider format, storage capacity, feeding directions, and verified availability. This research did not check current prices or listings.
Raw food safety and evidence
A complete-and-balanced claim is not evidence that a food is free of pathogens. FDA reports that raw foods can transfer pathogens through contaminated food, hands, surfaces, pets, and household environments. Freezing does not eliminate Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, or Campylobacter jejuni, according to FDA.
In an FDA CVM and FERN study of 196 raw dog and cat food samples purchased from online stores, 15 samples (7.7%) tested positive for Salmonella, 32 (16.3%) for Listeria monocytogenes, none for E. coli O157:H7, and 10 for non-O157 STEC. These results describe that sample set, not current prevalence across every product or the whole market.
FDA’s 2026 notice concerned a voluntary recall of one Albright’s chicken-recipe lot, C001730, for potential Salmonella contamination. FDA’s 2026 Raw Bistro warning letter described findings and manufacturing-control concerns involving a sampled lot. These are product- or company-specific records, not evidence that all products from either brand are affected.

FDA states that animal food generally does not undergo premarket review, but it must be safe, produced under sanitary conditions, free of harmful substances, and truthfully labeled. Covered facilities must follow applicable food-safety requirements, including food-safety planning and preventive controls where required. AAFCO develops model definitions and language, but FDA says AAFCO itself has no regulatory authority.

Treat both formats as raw food, not as sterile products. Follow the package’s storage and thawing directions and prevent cross-contamination with human food and household surfaces.
- Wash hands after handling food, packaging, bowls, utensils, and storage containers.
- Clean bowls, utensils, and preparation surfaces after each meal.
- Keep raw pet food separate from human food and food-preparation areas.
- Keep frozen food frozen until ready to thaw, and follow package directions for thawing and storage.
- Keep product and lot information so you can identify the food if a safety notice is issued.
FDA surveillance has identified pathogen concerns in raw pet food, and FDA’s safety guidance emphasizes that freezing does not eliminate certain pathogens. These cautions apply whether food is frozen or freeze-dried.

What this research can and cannot establish
This research did not verify current package labels, life-stage statements, formulas, availability, prices, or handling and testing claims for ten individual products. It therefore does not support ranking ten named products as current winners. For any candidate, confirm its exact label, feeding directions, formula and lot details, and current safety notices before relying on it as a sole diet.

Does “complete and balanced” mean raw food is safe from pathogens?
No. Nutritional adequacy and microbiological safety are different issues. FDA reports pathogen findings in raw pet food and warns that contamination can spread through food, hands, surfaces, pets, and household environments.
