Its short coat is straightforward to care for, but some white cats—especially blue-eyed cats—can be deaf. If you are considering one, verify its pedigree and registry records, and discuss hearing and preventive care with a veterinarian.
Also called Khaomanee and Khao Plort, the breed is associated with Thailand. Temperament descriptions are breed tendencies, not guarantees about an individual cat, and a white coat or odd-colored eyes alone do not establish pedigree.

A brief history of the Khao Manee
CFA and The International Cat Association (TICA) associate the breed with Thailand’s Tamra Maew tradition of cat poems. TICA records Registration Only status in May 2009 and Preliminary New Breed status effective May 2012. CFA says the breed remained exclusive to Thailand until 1999, when Colleen Freymuth brought cats to the United States for a breeding and conservation program. CFA accepted the breed for registration in 2018 and currently lists it in the Miscellaneous Class. These are association-specific milestones, not one shared recognition category.
Registry classifications can change. Anyone interested in showing or registering a cat should confirm current rules directly with the relevant organization. [CFA breed profile; TICA breed profile]
Khao Manee appearance
Coat and color
The standard look is a short-haired, pure white cat. The coat is described as easy to maintain, though white fur can be conspicuous on dark clothing, furniture, and bedding. A cat’s appearance alone does not prove Khao Manee ancestry.
Eyes
CFA’s standard permits blue, green, yellow, and amber-related shades, including different colors or shades between the eyes or within an eye. TICA also describes eyes that may be odd-colored or the same color. Odd eyes are characteristic, but eye color cannot establish pedigree or reliably determine hearing status.
Body and head
The breed is described as medium, muscular, flexible, and springy. CFA’s standard describes a modified wedge-shaped head with high cheekbones; TICA’s profile emphasizes a heart-shaped face and high cheekbones. For show-oriented questions, consult the applicable registry’s standard rather than treating every description as a universal rule. [CFA Khao Manee standard; TICA breed profile]
Khao Manee personality and activity level
CFA and TICA describe Khao Manee cats as intelligent, curious, active, playful, social, and strongly interested in people. They may enjoy fetching toys, exploring, vocalizing, sitting on laps, and joining household activity. TICA says they appreciate company and may be suitable with children and other pets. These are breed descriptions, not a promise about every cat; an individual’s temperament and socialization matter.

Plan for:
- Daily interactive play and opportunities to explore.
- Climbing and elevated resting opportunities.
- Sturdy scratching outlets.
- Puzzle feeders, fetch, or other enrichment suited to the individual cat.
- Gradual introductions to children and other pets.
Grooming and routine care
The short coat is straightforward to maintain. TICA recommends brushing once a week; CFA recommends regular brushing with a rubber brush to help control shedding. A soft rubber cat grooming brush is an optional, ordinary grooming tool—not a breed-specific requirement.
CFA notes that an occasional bath may help keep the white coat clean, but frequent bathing is not necessary. Ask a breeder about bathing technique and product choice if a bath is needed, and never use human shampoo on a cat.
Routine care also matters:
- Trim nails regularly and provide appropriate scratching surfaces.
- Check ears during normal handling; follow veterinary advice on ear cleaning.
- Brush teeth with veterinarian-approved pet toothpaste if your cat will tolerate it.
- Keep vaccinations and parasite treatments current according to veterinary advice.
- Provide fresh, clean water and good-quality cat food.
- Arrange routine veterinary care.
The breed’s easy-care coat does not replace ordinary preventive care.

Health: what prospective owners should know
CFA says Khao Manee cats are not known for specific breed health problems, and TICA describes the breed as generally healthy. These statements are not a guarantee that an individual cat will be free from illness. Discuss the cat’s health and preventive care with a veterinarian.
White coat, blue eyes, and deafness
CFA and TICA note that some white cats can be deaf. CFA particularly flags blue-eyed white cats and says odd-eyed cats may be deaf in one ear; TICA says some pure-white cats can be deaf in one or both ears. These are cautions, not a diagnosis. Eye color alone cannot establish whether an individual cat hears normally, and the reviewed breed materials do not provide a Khao Manee-specific deafness prevalence figure.
Ask the breeder about the cat’s hearing and any available evaluation, then discuss concerns with a veterinarian. A deaf cat can still be a good companion; ask your veterinarian for advice on safe, suitable care.
Food, exercise, and weight management
TICA says Khao Manee cats have no particular nutritional requirements beyond good-quality food. Provide fresh, clean water, and ask a veterinarian about food and portions suited to your cat’s age and condition.

Khao Manee versus an ordinary white domestic shorthair
A white domestic shorthair may have a short white coat, blue eyes, or mismatched eyes. Those traits do not prove Khao Manee ancestry. Someone seeking a pedigreed cat should verify documentation with the breeder and relevant registry.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Pedigree and registry records | Appearance alone cannot establish breed ancestry. |
| Breeder’s health and hearing information | Ask what is known about the individual cat and its family. |
| Individual temperament and socialization | Breed descriptions do not guarantee an individual cat’s behavior. |
| Household fit | Consider whether you can provide interaction, play, and companionship. |
How to find a Khao Manee kitten
Use the breeder resources offered by CFA and TICA, and verify current registration requirements directly with the relevant organization. Before committing, ask for:
- Pedigree and registration information, including the specific registry.
- Veterinary and routine-care records.
- Information about both parents and any known family health concerns.
- Available hearing information and an explanation of how it was assessed.
- A written contract covering ownership and any health or return provisions.
Be cautious of sellers who treat eye color as proof of breed or will not discuss health and hearing. A responsible breeder should explain the registry and provide the documentation available for the cat.

Pros and cons of living with a Khao Manee
| Potential advantages | Possible challenges |
|---|---|
| Distinctive white coat and vivid eyes | White hair can be conspicuous on fabrics and furniture |
| Short coat with straightforward grooming | Some white cats can be deaf, so hearing should be discussed rather than guessed from appearance |
| Often described as social, clever, and playful | A cat that values company may not suit a household unable to provide regular interaction |
| Strong Thai cultural and historical associations | Visual resemblance alone cannot verify pedigree |
Is the Khao Manee right for you?
A Khao Manee may suit you if you want a social, active companion and can provide daily interaction, play, routine grooming, and veterinary care. Consider the individual cat’s temperament and needs, and verify its documentation and hearing information rather than relying on appearance alone.
FAQ
Are Khao Manee cats friendly?
CFA and TICA describe the breed as social and strongly interested in people. Individual temperament and socialization vary, so spend time learning about the cat you are considering.
Are Khao Manee cats deaf?
Not necessarily. CFA and TICA note that some white cats can be deaf, particularly some blue-eyed cats; odd-eyed cats may have hearing loss in one ear. Eye color alone cannot determine an individual cat’s hearing. Ask about the cat’s hearing and consult a veterinarian with concerns.
How do you groom a Khao Manee?
TICA recommends weekly brushing, while CFA recommends regular brushing with a rubber brush to help control shedding. CFA says occasional bathing may help keep the white coat clean; human shampoo should not be used on cats.
How can I tell if a white cat is a Khao Manee?
A white coat or odd-colored eyes cannot establish breed ancestry. If you are seeking a pedigreed Khao Manee, verify pedigree and registry records with the breeder and relevant organization.
What is the difference between Khao Manee and Khao Plort?
CFA translates Khao Manee as “White Gem.” TICA says Khao Plort means “all white” and is the term used in the Thai cat poems it discusses. Khaomanee is also a spelling used by TICA.
The Bottom Line
The Khao Manee is a natural Thai breed known for a short white coat, vivid eyes, and a social, active temperament. Its coat is straightforward to care for, but some white cats can be deaf. If you are considering one, prioritize verifiable pedigree and registry records, the individual cat’s temperament, and an honest discussion of health and hearing.
