In summer 2024, researchers at Briones Regional Park in California observed California ground squirrels hunting, killing, and eating California voles. The study recorded 74 vole-related observations, and a University of California account says 42 percent of the observed interactions involved active hunting.
The finding documents flexible, opportunistic feeding in one study population—not a permanent change to carnivory or evidence that all California ground squirrels hunt mammals.
What the researchers saw
The observations came from the 12th year of a long-term behavioral ecology study of California ground squirrels (Otospermophilus beecheyi) at Briones Regional Park in Contra Costa County, California. Over about two months in 2024, researchers recorded 74 vole-related observations involving juvenile and adult squirrels of both sexes. The observations included squirrels depredating, consuming, and/or competing over vole prey.
The University of California reported that 42 percent of the 74 observed vole interactions involved active hunting. These figures describe one population at one study site during a short period; they are not estimates of how commonly squirrels hunt across California.

They were hunting—not merely scavenging
Squirrels can eat a range of foods, and meat-eating or isolated predation has been reported before. The unusual finding here was widespread active hunting of mammalian prey in this study population. Researchers observed squirrels pursuing and killing live voles, behavior that is distinct from scavenging an animal that was already dead.
The paper also describes squirrels consuming and competing over vole prey. Its findings support dietary flexibility and opportunistic omnivory, not a claim that California ground squirrels have permanently become carnivores.
Why would a mostly plant-eating squirrel hunt?
The researchers associate the observations with an unusual increase in local California vole abundance. The paper notes that vole reports in 2024 reached a decadal peak, and the University of California account says the hunting coincided with an increase reported by citizen scientists on iNaturalist.

This is a proposed ecological context, not proof that abundant voles caused the hunting. The observations do not establish that the squirrels were starving or that they hunted because of a nutritional deficiency.
Are all squirrels now meat-eaters?
No. The study does not show that all California ground squirrels routinely hunt voles, and it does not establish how prevalent the behavior is at other sites or across the species’ range.
The findings show that squirrels in one study population hunted and consumed voles during a particular period. Researchers do not yet know whether the behavior will continue after local vole numbers change. This observed feeding flexibility is not evidence of a permanent shift from omnivory to carnivory.

What the study still cannot answer
The observations leave several questions open:
- How widespread is the behavior? The study does not establish how common vole hunting is at other sites.
- Will it continue? The observations do not show whether hunting will persist as local vole abundance changes.
- Does it affect reproduction or survival? The supplied research does not establish an effect on squirrel reproduction or survival.
- Does it affect local ecology? The findings do not establish the behavior’s effects on vole populations or other ecological processes.
A reminder that familiar animals still hold surprises
Long-term observation at Briones Regional Park revealed California ground squirrels hunting and eating mammalian prey. The broader lesson is not that squirrels have become carnivores, but that familiar animals can show flexible behavior when circumstances provide an opportunity.
