How to Get Rid of Mice in Walls: 5 Safe, Effective Methods

Confirm mouse activity, trap mice only in accessible travel areas, seal entry points with durable materials, and remove food and shelter. Avoid poison in wall cavities and dry cleanup; call a professional for inaccessible contamination, HVAC involvement, or persistent activity.

The most effective way to get rid of mice in walls is not to poison the wall cavity. Instead, confirm that mice are responsible, trap them where they emerge or travel, remove food and nesting opportunities, seal the openings they use, and monitor for new signs. This approach is safer for pets and reduces the chance of a mouse dying behind drywall and creating a persistent odor.

Do not cut into a wall casually or place loose poison inside it. If mice have reached HVAC ducts, there is heavy contamination, wiring appears damaged, or activity continues after trapping and exclusion, contact a qualified pest-control or rodent-exclusion professional.

Before you start: make sure the noise is mice

Scratching or running sounds in a wall can come from mice, but they can also come from insects, birds, squirrels, rats, plumbing, or heating and cooling equipment. Look for several pieces of evidence rather than relying on sound alone.

  • Small, dark droppings near baseboards, cabinets, appliances, closets, or utility openings
  • Fresh gnaw marks on food packaging, wood, plastic, wires, or other materials
  • Shredded paper, fabric, insulation, or other nesting material
  • A stale or musky odor near a wall, ceiling, cabinet, or other enclosed area
  • Small holes or gaps around pipes, wires, vents, doors, windows, foundations, and wall-floor joints
  • New droppings appearing after an area has been cleaned

Mice can fit through a hole about 1/4 inch (6 millimeters) wide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A mouse may therefore be living in or moving through a wall without ever appearing in the room.

The five methods, in the right order

1. Monitor the evidence and identify the accessible travel route

Inspect the rooms on both sides of the suspected wall, plus nearby closets, cabinets, basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages, and utility areas. Concentrate on places where a wall meets the floor or ceiling and on penetrations for plumbing, electrical wiring, cable, heating pipes, vents, and appliances.

After safely cleaning accessible evidence, mark or photograph the locations. Check them again over the next several days. New droppings, fresh gnawing, disturbed nesting material, or continued nighttime activity indicate that mice are still active.

This monitoring step helps you place traps at a real route instead of scattering them throughout the home. It also helps distinguish an old infestation from current activity.

2. Seal the openings mice use to enter and move through the building

Exclusion is the long-term fix. Inspect the exterior first, then work inward. Check:

  • Non-toxic Super Glue: Our mouse traps use super glue that can withstand the cold weather. Once the mouse or insect is stuck, it can no longer break free, and these glues are non-toxic, harmless to your children and pets. They are safe for use inside your house.
  • Where to Place: We suggest you position sticky traps along active rodent and insects runways, such as along walls, under large kitchen appliances, in cupboards, and other areas where rodents and insects travel. Be sure to fit the glue trap flush against a wall where they will run over and stick to it.
  • Wide Application: These heavy-duty trays come out as pairs, traps can be placed in areas where the mice are most likely to run, along walls, or skirting boards where pests are active. Ideal for the basement, residences, warehouses, restaurants, houses, indoor, industrial buildings, and attic use. Effective in catching everything from snakes, mice, rats, lizards, crickets, scorpions, spiders, etc.
  • Foundation cracks and gaps where siding, masonry, or trim meets the foundation
  • Openings around plumbing, wiring, gas lines, cable, and vents
  • Door bottoms, garage doors, window frames, and damaged screens
  • Crawl-space and attic access points
  • Wall-floor junctions, cabinet penetrations, and gaps behind appliances
  • Roof, soffit, and vent openings that connect to an attic or wall cavity

For small holes, the CDC advises filling them with steel wool secured with caulk. Larger holes may need lath screen, metal, cement, hardware cloth, or metal sheeting. Spray foam, wood, plastic, and similar chewable materials should not be the only barrier where rodents can reach them. Foam may be useful as part of a repair, but it should not be treated as a complete rodent-proof solution.

For utility penetrations and small gaps, rodent-proof mesh can be combined with an appropriate sealant or structural repair. Larger openings may require hardware cloth or sheet metal. A properly fitted rodent-proof door sweep can help close gaps beneath exterior, garage, and basement doors. Sealing prevents entry; it does not remove mice already inside.

Important sequencing point: do not blindly seal every suspected opening while mice may still be inside. First place traps at accessible travel routes and determine whether activity is continuing. Then complete the exclusion work. The safest order depends on whether you can identify an active exit route and whether mice may be trapped inside a wall, attic, crawl space, or ceiling.

3. Use several snap traps outside the wall cavity

The CDC recommends traditional snap traps for household rodent control. Use a trap intended for mice, follow its instructions, and put it where there are signs of activity:

  • Along baseboards and wall edges
  • Near fresh droppings or gnaw marks
  • Behind or beside appliances and furniture
  • Near the suspected opening from the wall into the room
  • In basements, attics, garages, or crawl spaces where signs are concentrated

Place a trap with its baited end next to the wall, or orient it so the trigger crosses the mouse’s likely path. A small amount of peanut butter is a commonly recommended bait. Use multiple traps when signs indicate more than occasional activity; mice often stay close to walls and may remain near their nest. Check traps daily.

  • NO-SEE, NO-TOUCH DISPOSAL: This electronic mouse trap is designed for easy, hygienic removal. You can empty the chamber without seeing or touching the rodent, making it an ideal electric mouse trap zapper for you

Keep every trap inaccessible to pets and children. A curious dog or cat can injure its nose, paw, or mouth, and a pet may move a trap into an unsafe location. Use protective boxes or place traps inside secured areas where appropriate, while ensuring the mouse can still reach the trap. Follow local rules for disposing of captured rodents.

If you are ready to set traps at accessible wall edges or other travel routes, compare mouse snap traps. The key is placement and safety—not putting a trap deep inside an unopened wall.

The CDC advises against glue boards and live traps for household rodent control. Live traps also do not solve the problem by themselves: unless all entry points are sealed, a released mouse may return or another mouse may enter.

4. Remove food, water, and nesting opportunities

Sanitation will not usually eliminate an established infestation by itself, but it reduces the resources supporting the mice and makes new evidence easier to spot.

  • Store human food, pet food, birdseed, and animal feed in thick plastic, metal, or glass containers with tight-fitting lids.
  • Clean crumbs, spills, and food residue promptly, including beneath appliances.
  • Do not leave pet food or water out overnight if mice are active nearby.
  • Repair leaking pipes, dripping faucets, and other accessible water sources.
  • Use tightly closed garbage containers and clean food waste from outdoor areas.
  • Reduce clutter, cardboard, fabric piles, and other nesting material in basements, garages, attics, and storage areas.
  • Move brush, debris, woodpiles, deep mulch, and accessible compost away from the structure when practical.

Because this is a pet site, pay special attention to kibble bags, treat containers, bird feeders, rabbit or chicken feed, and food bowls. A mouse may be entering through a small exterior gap but staying because food is readily available indoors.

5. Use poison cautiously—or bring in a professional

Rodenticides can be hazardous to pets and children, and they create a particular problem inside walls: a poisoned mouse may die in an inaccessible cavity, causing odor and attracting insects. For that reason, indoor snap traps are usually a better first choice for mice in walls.

Consider poison or bait stations only if the infestation persists despite trapping and exclusion. If a rodenticide is used, use only a product legally sold for that purpose, follow its label exactly, and place it only where the label permits. Consumer products should be used in tamper-resistant bait stations, never as loose bait scattered through a room or pushed into a wall. Keep bait and dead rodents away from pets, children, and other animals. A pet that may have eaten bait or a poisoned rodent needs urgent veterinary advice; contact your veterinarian or a local animal poison service immediately.

Professional help is the safer and more efficient option when:

  • Mice have entered heating or cooling ducts or an HVAC ventilation system
  • There is heavy droppings, urine, or nesting-material contamination
  • You suspect a mouse has died inside a wall or ceiling
  • Wiring, insulation, ductwork, or other building components may be damaged
  • You cannot find or safely reach the entry points
  • Fresh signs continue after trapping and exclusion
  • The infestation involves an attic, crawl space, shared wall, rental property, or other difficult-to-access area

When hiring a provider, look for an appropriately licensed and insured company in your area, ask whether the work includes exclusion rather than baiting alone, and request a clear description of inspection, trapping, cleanup, repairs, and follow-up.

How to clean mouse droppings and nesting material safely

Do not sweep or vacuum dry droppings, urine, nesting material, or a dead mouse. Dry cleanup can put contaminated particles into the air. The CDC advises wearing rubber or plastic gloves, thoroughly wetting the material with disinfectant, waiting five minutes or following the disinfectant label, then wiping it up and disinfecting the surface.

  1. Ventilate first. When feasible, open doors and windows and leave the enclosed area for about 30 minutes before cleaning.
  2. Protect yourself. Wear rubber or plastic gloves. For substantial contamination, ask a professional about additional protective equipment and cleanup procedures.
  3. Wet the material thoroughly. Use an appropriate disinfectant and follow its label, including the contact time. Do not use an unsupported bleach dilution.
  4. Wipe it up. Use paper towels, place the waste in a covered container or sealed bag, and clean and disinfect the surrounding surface.
  5. Handle a dead mouse carefully. Wet the carcass and nearby material with disinfectant, place it in a plastic bag, seal the bag, place it inside a second bag, seal that bag, and dispose of it according to local requirements.
  6. Wash your hands. Wash gloved hands before removing the gloves, remove them carefully, and wash bare hands afterward.

Never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaning products. If contamination is extensive, inside an HVAC system, or in a difficult-to-access wall or ceiling cavity, stop and call a qualified professional. For routine cleanup supplies, an EPA-registered rodent cleanup disinfectant and disposable gloves can help you follow the wet-cleaning procedure safely; ordinary household cleaning is not a substitute for professional remediation after heavy contamination.

What does not reliably get rid of mice in walls?

  • Peppermint oil and other scented repellents: they are not a dependable substitute for sealing openings and trapping mice.
  • Ultrasonic repellents: do not rely on them as the primary treatment for an established infestation.
  • General insect sprays: these do not address a mouse infestation.
  • Loose poison in the wall: it creates exposure risks and can leave a decomposing mouse where you cannot retrieve it.
  • Sealing one hole and stopping: mice may use another opening or remain inside the structure.
  • Opening drywall immediately: cutting into a wall can expose you to contaminated nesting material, damage plumbing or wiring, and create an unnecessary repair. Open the cavity only when the cause and safe repair plan are clear, preferably with professional help.

A practical mouse-control checklist

Today

  • Remove access to pet food, birdseed, feed, garbage, and spilled food.
  • Inspect the room and nearby attic, basement, crawl-space, and utility areas.
  • Mark droppings, gnaw marks, and possible entry points.
  • Place several pet- and child-inaccessible snap traps along active, accessible routes.
  • Wet-disinfect any droppings or nesting material; never sweep or vacuum it dry.

Over the next few days

  • Check traps daily and inspect marked areas regularly.
  • Look outside around foundations, doors, vents, pipes, wires, garages, and crawl-space openings.
  • Repair gaps with durable rodent-resistant materials rather than relying on foam alone.
  • Continue storing food and feed in sealed containers and reduce outdoor shelter near the building.

Escalate when needed

  • Call a professional if activity persists after trapping and exclusion.
  • Arrange professional help for HVAC involvement, heavy contamination, suspected hidden carcasses, or possible wiring damage.
  • Contact a veterinarian urgently if a pet may have contacted rodenticide or eaten a poisoned rodent.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get rid of mice in a wall?

You may see fewer signs within several days after correctly placed traps are active, but the time varies with the number of mice, available food, and how many entry points are present. Continue monitoring after trapping and complete exclusion; fresh droppings or noises mean the problem is not resolved.

Should I put mouse poison inside the wall?

No. Poison inside a wall can leave a dead mouse in an inaccessible cavity, causing odor and attracting insects, and it creates risks for pets and children. Use accessible snap traps first. If chemical control is necessary after the infestation persists, use only a labeled product in a tamper-resistant bait station and consider professional assistance.

Can mice chew through spray foam?

Yes. Spray foam, wood, plastic, and similar materials may be chewed through when used alone. Use metal mesh, hardware cloth, sheet metal, mortar, or an appropriate combination of materials and sealant for reachable openings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a cat or dog get rid of mice in the walls?

A pet may catch a mouse that enters a room, but pets cannot reliably remove mice inside wall cavities or seal the entry routes. Keep traps and any bait inaccessible to pets, and never expose an animal to rodenticide unnecessarily.

When should I call an exterminator for mice in a wall?

Call a qualified professional for HVAC involvement, heavy contamination, suspected carcasses in inaccessible cavities, damaged wiring or insulation, unreachable entry points, or continuing fresh signs after trapping and exclusion. Verify local licensing, insurance, and that the service includes exclusion rather than baiting alone.

The Bottom Line

To get rid of mice in walls, trap them where they emerge, remove food and nesting resources, seal every reachable entry route with durable materials, and monitor for fresh signs. Avoid loose poison and dry cleanup, protect pets and children from traps and bait, and call a professional when the infestation involves HVAC systems, heavy contamination, hidden carcasses, damaged wiring, or persistent activity.
