The safest way to deal with ground bees is to keep people and pets away, identify the insect from a distance, and usually wait for the active period to end. Many ground-nesting bees are solitary pollinators, not a communal colony; a ground-nesting yellowjacket nest can look similar and may be hazardous. Do not directly spray bee nests with pesticides. If identification is uncertain or the nest poses a serious safety risk, ask your local Cooperative Extension office or a licensed pest professional for advice.

These eight steps help you manage immediate access safely and, if needed, discourage future nesting without promising to remove active bees immediately.

1. Pause and watch from a distance

Do not approach, handle insects, probe holes, or disturb the soil. From a safe distance, note whether activity is spread among several small entrances or concentrated at one entrance. The number of holes or the insects’ appearance alone cannot confirm that a site is safe.

2. Check the identification

Many ground-nesting bees use individual holes in exposed, loose, well-drained soil. They may nest near one another, so an aggregation can look like a colony even though the bees do not share one. A ground-nesting yellowjacket nest can look similar; activity concentrated at one entrance may be a warning sign. If you are unsure, take a photo from a safe distance and ask your local Cooperative Extension office or a qualified professional to identify it.

3. Keep people and pets away

Reroute foot traffic and keep children and pets away from the active patch. If it is near a walkway or play area, use a temporary barrier or rope to redirect people while the insects are active. Do not mow over the entrance, kick soil into it, dig around it, flood it, or try to catch an insect.

4. Consider waiting

Ground-nesting bees are often beneficial and present for a limited period. The active season varies by species and local conditions. N.C. Cooperative Extension describes a typical active period of about four to six weeks in its local guidance; that duration is not universal. If the area can be avoided safely, monitor it from a distance and let the active period pass.

5. Change the habitat after activity ends

If you want to discourage nesting in that spot, wait until activity has ended before changing the ground. Denser vegetation, suitable ground cover, or mulch in appropriate beds and paths can reduce exposed soil access. Do not till or dig an active nesting patch as a casual fix; disturbing it can harm nesting insects and expose you to stings. Planting choices and timing vary by region, so consult local extension guidance.

6. Consider watering only when it suits the site

Oregon State University Extension suggests heavy sprinkler watering as one option because ground-nesting bees often favor dry soil. This is not a guaranteed remedy or a suitable choice for every lawn. Consider drainage, water restrictions, and local conditions before changing watering practices.

7. Avoid direct pesticide treatment of bee nests

UC Statewide IPM Program guidance says, “Do not directly spray bees, beehives, or bee nesting sites with any pesticide.” Do not use older pesticide recommendations as a current default: product labels and rules can change, and direct treatment can harm pollinators. If you suspect yellowjackets or face a serious safety risk, keep everyone away and seek advice from a local expert or licensed pest professional. Any pesticide use must comply with the current product label and local requirements.

8. Check the site next season

After activity ends, maintain denser vegetation or appropriate ground cover where you want to discourage future nesting. If you also want to support native pollinators, consider retaining a separate patch of suitable bare soil. Soil, planting windows, and suitable ground-cover choices vary by location; ask your local Cooperative Extension office for regional advice.

FAQ

Will ground bees leave on their own?

Many ground-nesting bees are active for a limited seasonal period and may become inactive without treatment. The timing varies by species and location. Monitor from a distance rather than disturbing the soil.

Should I fill in ground-bee holes?

Not while insects are actively using them. Filling, digging, or tilling active holes can disturb nesting insects and may expose you to stings. If you want to change the site, wait until activity has ended.

Observe activity from a safe distance. Individual insects using separate holes may indicate solitary bees, while concentrated activity at one entrance may indicate a yellowjacket nest. These clues are not a definitive identification; ask a local expert if you are uncertain.
