Choose a birdhouse for the species you hope to attract, then check that its entrance, placement, construction, and clean-out access suit that bird. A well-built, species-appropriate nest box is more useful than a decorative house, but no product can guarantee that birds will use it.

The research supports two product examples—a cedar bluebird house and a wren cedar birdhouse listed by Audubon—but does not establish six current “best” models. Verify each seller’s current dimensions, availability, and installation instructions before buying.

Audubon Cedar Bluebird House Bluebird habitat Audubon describes it as a cedar nest box supporting bluebird habitat. Current entrance size, interior dimensions, mounting method, cleaning access, and availability.
Audubon Wren Cedar Birdhouse Wrens Audubon describes a wren-specific entrance, screwed construction, a top ventilation gap, and drainage slots. Current dimensions, exact target species, mounting method, cleaning access, and availability.
Other species-specific nest box The species present in your yard Species, habitat, and construction criteria can guide selection even when a particular model has not been verified. All dimensions, materials, weather protection, clean-out access, and compatible protection hardware.

Start with the bird, not the house

Entrance size, box dimensions, mounting height, and habitat differ by species. New Jersey Audubon Society gives regional examples: a 1 1/8-inch entrance and 5–15-foot mounting height for Black-capped Chickadees, compared with a 1 1/2-inch entrance and 3–6-foot height for Eastern Bluebirds. These are regional recommendations, not universal rules; check local plans and the habitat around your home.

Mass Audubon associates bluebirds with open fields; chickadees, titmice, and nuthatches with open woods and edges; and woodpeckers with forest openings and edges. A box that fits a species on paper may still be unsuitable if the surrounding habitat does not meet its needs.

  • Weather and moisture management: Look for a roof that sheds rain, drainage, and ventilation.
  • Safe construction: Prefer natural, untreated wood and sturdy construction.
  • Inspection and cleaning access: Choose a design with a panel or hinge that opens.
  • Predator protection: Consider a compatible entrance guard or pole baffle for the installation.

Where and when to install a birdhouse

Choose a location based on the target species, habitat, sun and weather exposure, pesticide use, and predator risks. Predator guards and pole baffles can help protect nest boxes, according to Mass Audubon. Choose hardware that fits the box and mounting system. A guard at the entrance and a baffle on a pole serve different parts of the installation, so check which protection is appropriate for your setup.

Do not open or handle an active nest casually. New Jersey Audubon describes monitoring nest boxes during the nesting season in its regional guidance; follow local rules and avoid disturbing birds. Mass Audubon recommends cleaning after the breeding season, usually by mid-August, then rinsing and drying the box fully. Timing can vary by location and species, so consult local guidance.

What are the correct dimensions for each species?

There is no single set of dimensions for all birds. Check local plans and the current product specifications for your target species.

What should I look for in a birdhouse?

Prioritize an entrance and box dimensions suited to the target species, natural untreated wood, weather protection, ventilation, drainage, secure mounting, and access for inspection and cleaning. Southern Maryland Audubon and Mass Audubon also advise against an outside perch.
