Zoo officials identified her as albino, and her unusual appearance drew wide attention. She was introduced to visitors on November 10, 2023; a count attributed to National Geographic at the time said four albino pumas had been recorded worldwide, but it was not a comprehensive census.
Who was Itzae?
Itzae was one of three female puma cubs born at Thomas Belt Zoo. Her sisters were named Itzel and Itziar. They had the species’ usual coloring, while Itzae was described as white and identified by the zoo as albino. Contemporary coverage described her as the first captive-born albino puma in Nicaragua.
The contrast within the litter helps explain the attention her birth attracted: one cub looked strikingly different from her two sisters. She was still a puma, Puma concolor, not a separate species or a “white panther.”
Why was Itzae white?
Zoo officials and contemporaneous news reports called Itzae albino. Albinism is a pigmentation condition associated with reduced or absent melanin. A white coat alone, however, is not enough to establish a diagnosis; leucism can also cause pale or white coloring.

The available reporting identifies Itzae as albino but does not establish that a published genetic or laboratory test confirmed the condition. The careful description is that she was a white puma cub identified by the zoo as albino.
Why was her birth considered so rare?
EFE’s 2023 report attributed to National Geographic a count of four albino pumas recorded worldwide. The reviewed reporting provides no registry or methodology showing that this was a complete global count, so it should be treated as a reported figure from that time—not as a current, verified census or proof that Itzae was definitively the fourth.

When did Itzae meet visitors?
After keeping the litter in isolation for a little more than three months, the zoo presented Itzae to visitors on November 10, 2023. EFE reported that the zoo’s board president, Marlon Vargas, said she was in good condition at that time. That statement describes her condition at the 2023 presentation, not an independent veterinary assessment or a report of her current health.

What has been reported about Itzae’s care more recently?
In June 2026, photos of Itzae prompted online discussion about her apparent body condition. Infobae reported that the zoo responded that technical and veterinary staff oversee her care and diet, with supplements or medication as needed. This is the zoo’s reported position; the coverage reviewed does not provide an independent veterinary examination. Images alone do not establish a diagnosis, so claims of a confirmed health crisis would go beyond the available evidence.
