Research sources do not establish vinegar as a reliable way to repel skunks from a yard or garden, so there is no supported recipe or spraying schedule to recommend. Colorado State University Extension describes diluted vinegar for removing skunk odor from pets, clothing, and possessions—not for preventing skunks from visiting. Focus instead on reducing food and shelter attractants and using physical exclusion where appropriate.
What vinegar can—and cannot—do
Vinegar is not a proven outdoor skunk repellent. Iowa State University Extension says scent repellents typically are not very effective, while UC IPM says commercial skunk repellents are unfortunately not very effective. Odor removal after a skunk sprays is a separate use: Colorado State University Extension gives a mixture of 2% vinegar and 98% water for odor treatment. That mixture is not a yard-repellent recipe.
Do not apply vinegar around a yard or garden expecting it to keep skunks away. Strong-smelling repellents should not be placed beneath occupied buildings where fumes could enter living spaces, according to UC IPM.

| Approach | What it does | Evidence and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Vinegar or other scent products | Relies on odor rather than blocking access or removing food. | Sources do not establish vinegar as a yard repellent; scent repellents are typically not very effective and may need frequent reapplication, especially after rain, according to Iowa State Extension. |
| Attractant reduction | Makes food and shelter less accessible. | Recommended by Colorado State University Extension and UC IPM; address garbage, pet food, compost, rubbish, and accessible openings. |
| Physical exclusion | Blocks access to a lawn area or structure. | Iowa State Extension calls exclusion often the most effective management option for skunk and raccoon lawn damage. Suitability depends on the location and problem. |
| Professional help | Assesses a den or removal problem and applicable local requirements. | Appropriate when you lack trapping experience or the situation requires removal. Rules and options vary by location. |
Reduce food and shelter attractants
- Secure garbage and pet food. Keep food sources inaccessible to wildlife.
- Manage compost and other food sources. Reduce easy access to potential food around the property.
- Remove rubbish and address openings. Check accessible gaps around structures that could offer shelter.
These steps address reasons a skunk may visit rather than relying on a scent that may fade or wash away.

Use physical exclusion where appropriate
For skunk damage to lawns, exclusion may be more useful than scent products. Iowa State University Extension describes sturdy wire fencing and mesh secured to the ground. The right approach depends on whether the issue is foraging, food attractants, or denning beneath a structure.
Do not block an opening if an animal may be inside. If you suspect a skunk is denning under a building or are unsure how to address an opening safely, contact a wildlife-control professional or local wildlife authorities. Local rules and removal options vary.

Do not disturb or try to trap a skunk unless you have appropriate experience. UC IPM advises people without trapping experience to hire a professional wildlife control operator, and Mississippi State Extension advises against trying to trap a skunk yourself. Ask local wildlife authorities or a qualified local professional about the rules and options where you live.
If a dog is sprayed directly in the eyes or mouth, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine advises seeking immediate veterinary care.
