Bird Flu Continues to Spread Through Michigan: What the 2026 Data Show

MDARD reported three Michigan domestic flock detections in spring 2026 and no domestic-animal detections since March in its September update. Wildlife records show later detections, but separate surveillance dates and categories should not be combined into one statewide total.

Bird flu has continued to be detected in Michigan wildlife, but Michigan’s domestic-animal detections were quiet after March, according to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s (MDARD) September 14, 2026 update. MDARD reported three domestic flock detections in spring 2026—two commercial and one backyard—and no domestic-animal detections since March as of that update. A later federal wild-bird record documents a mallard in Macomb County detected on September 29, so wildlife detections continued on a different timeline.

These figures come from separate surveillance systems and dates; they are not a single count of all infected animals in Michigan. Backyard flock owners can reduce risk by keeping domestic birds away from wild birds, cleaning and disinfecting equipment, limiting visitors, and reporting unusual illness or deaths.

What “continues to spread” means in Michigan

Michigan is not experiencing one outbreak rising at the same rate in every species and county. The clearest current state snapshot is MDARD’s September 14, 2026 update: it reported no HPAI detections in Michigan domestic animals since March, after three spring flock detections. Wildlife surveillance records show detections on a separate timeline.

Surveillance totals are not a census of every infected animal. Michigan DNR notes that it may test only a subset of animals in a mortality event. USDA APHIS explains that its detection date is the date of confirmatory testing and that sample processing can lag collection. Keep the animal category, location, date basis, and source in mind when comparing figures.

Michigan’s 2026 wildlife and domestic-animal picture

Domestic flocks

MDARD reported a backyard flock in Ottawa County on January 28, 2026, and a commercial flock in Kent County on March 16. Its September 14 update summarized the three spring detections as two commercial flocks and one backyard flock, and said there had been no domestic-animal detections since March as of that release. This is a dated status report, not a guarantee against later detections.

For context, MDARD reported 22 Michigan domestic poultry detections in 2025: 10 commercial and 12 backyard. Thirteen of those 22 detections occurred in fall. MDARD has noted that migration periods are associated with renewed risk, but said the impact of the coming fall was difficult to predict. The 2025 total is historical context, not a projection for 2026.

Wildlife surveillance

The Michigan DNR listed eight confirmed positive wildlife samples through March 22, 2026, with additional samples pending. Those are confirmed samples, not eight outbreaks or a count of all infected wild birds in the state.

USDA APHIS’s wild-bird detection table includes a Macomb County mallard collected September 17 and detected September 29, 2026. APHIS detection dates reflect confirmatory testing, so collection and detection dates are not interchangeable. The sources reviewed do not establish a complete Michigan wildlife total through October 2026.

Dairy cattle

MDARD reported no Michigan dairy herd detections in 2025 and said the state reached Stage 4 / Unaffected Status in July 2025 while monitoring continued. This historical dairy status is separate from the 2026 poultry and wildlife records; it should not be read as a claim that dairy monitoring ended.

How HPAI moves between animals

Wild birds, including migratory birds, can carry HPAI into new areas. Domestic animals may be exposed through direct contact or through contamination of feed, water, equipment, clothing, or footwear. MDARD identifies contaminated equipment, feed, clothing, and shoes as potential routes of spread.

  • Wild-bird movement: migratory birds may carry the virus into new areas.
  • Direct animal contact: domestic animals may encounter infected wild birds or other animals.
  • Contaminated gear: footwear, tools, cages, clothing, and vehicles can move contamination.
  • People and shared supplies: visitors, workers, and equipment can connect otherwise separate flocks or farms.

Keeping birds in a yard does not eliminate risk if wild birds can reach their run or feed, or if people and equipment move between poultry areas.

What backyard flock owners should do

MDARD’s September 2026 recommendations focus on preventing contact between domestic animals and wild birds and avoiding the movement of contamination between animal areas. Make these steps part of a routine:

  1. Separate domestic birds from wild birds. Enclose outdoor areas where practical and secure feed from wild birds and rodents.
  2. Limit visitors. Restrict nonessential access to poultry areas and ask necessary visitors to follow your biosecurity routine.
  3. Use dedicated clothing and footwear. Keep poultry-area shoes and clothing separate, and do not wear contaminated items into another animal area, a vehicle, or your home.
  4. Clean and disinfect equipment. Clean footwear, clothing, tools, and shared equipment using an EPA-registered disinfectant effective against avian influenza. Follow the product label, including its directions for use.
  5. Do not share supplies without cleaning them. Clean and disinfect equipment before it moves between coops or farms.
  6. Wash your hands. Wash before and after handling birds or poultry materials.
  7. Watch the flock and report unusual illness. Sudden deaths or a cluster of sick birds can have several causes but warrant prompt advice and reporting.

What farm workers and animal handlers should know

People who work with infected poultry, dairy cattle, sick or dead wildlife, or contaminated animal environments have a different exposure risk from the general public. Follow your employer’s biosecurity and occupational-health plan, use task-appropriate protective equipment, and avoid bringing contaminated clothing or equipment home.

Do not touch sick or dead birds or mammals with bare hands. Keep people and animals away and report the event rather than attempting to collect or transport an animal yourself. If you have had contact with an animal and become ill, tell a healthcare professional about the exposure.

Human health and public risk

MDARD’s September 14, 2026 update says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention assesses the current public-health risk as low. That assessment concerns the general public; it does not mean there is no risk for people exposed to infected animals.

CDC’s October 2, 2026 monitoring update reports national exposure-monitoring figures: at least 33,300 people monitored and at least 1,340 tested from February 2022 through September 26, 2026. These are national figures, not Michigan case or monitoring totals. The sources reviewed do not establish a Michigan-only human case total for 2026.

Food safety

MDARD advises proper handling and cooking of meat and eggs, and avoiding raw milk. Follow current public-health food-safety guidance and distinguish animal-exposure precautions from the handling and consumption of food products.

The Bottom Line

Michigan’s 2026 picture differs between domestic animals and wildlife. MDARD reported three spring flock detections and no domestic-animal detections since March in its September 14 update, while wildlife surveillance records include a later Macomb County mallard detection. Keep those sources and time windows distinct, protect domestic birds from wild birds and contaminated gear, and report unusual illness or deaths promptly.
