If you suspect your cat has been exposed to something poisonous, contact a veterinarian, emergency veterinary clinic, or animal poison-control service promptly—even if your cat seems normal. The right next step depends on the substance, amount, route, timing, and your cat’s condition; do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinary professional directs you.
If your cat is having trouble breathing, collapsing, or having a seizure, prioritize emergency veterinary care and call ahead if possible.
What to do if you think your cat has been poisoned
- Move your cat away from the exposure. Prevent further access or contact, and move other pets away. If the substance may be on your cat’s skin or fur, ask a veterinary professional what to do before washing.
- Call for professional guidance immediately. Contact your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary clinic, or an animal poison-control service. For US readers, ASPCA Animal Poison Control lists (888) 426-4435 and Pet Poison Helpline lists (855) 764-7661. Confirm service access and any fees directly; these are not worldwide numbers.
- Share what you know. Tell the professional what may have been involved, when and how exposure happened, the possible amount, your cat’s weight, and any signs you have noticed. Do not delay the call to gather details.
- Keep the label or a photo available. Save the package, product label, or a photo of it. If a plant may be involved, provide its name or a photo if available.
- Follow professional instructions for transport and first aid. Keep your cat secure and quiet, and follow the veterinary team’s directions.
Poison-control advice does not replace emergency treatment when a cat is critically ill. If severe signs are present, seek emergency veterinary care.
Why poisoning can be difficult to recognize
Poisoning does not have one predictable pattern. Signs and urgency depend on the substance and exposure, and a cat may show no obvious symptoms at first. A normal appearance after a suspected exposure does not establish that your cat is safe.

Symptoms of poisoning in cats
Possible signs include:
- Vomiting, diarrhea, or drooling
- Lethargy, weakness, or changes in behavior
- Poor coordination or difficulty walking
- Breathing difficulty
- Tremors or seizures
These signs do not identify a particular toxin and can also occur with other illnesses. Some poisoned cats may have few or no obvious signs at first. Seek professional advice after a suspected exposure even if your cat appears well.
What not to do
- Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional directs you. Pet Poison Helpline’s emergency instructions say: “Do NOT induce vomiting without consulting a vet or Pet Poison Helpline®.” Vomiting can be harmful in some situations.
- Do not give home remedies. Do not administer milk, oil, salt, charcoal, human medicine, or another treatment unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional specifically instructs you.
- Do not wait for symptoms after a suspected exposure. Contact a professional promptly for advice based on the substance and circumstances.
- Do not delay the call to collect information. Share what you know, then provide the label, amount, timing, and route details as they become available.
How veterinarians treat cat poisoning

Whether vomiting, activated charcoal, an antidote, or another intervention is appropriate depends on the substance and the cat’s condition. Merck Veterinary Manual cautions that inducing vomiting may be inappropriate when a substance could injure the esophagus on the way back up, too much time has passed, or swallowing or airway protection is impaired.
