To get rid of sugar ants without only killing the workers you see, remove food and water, wipe away trails, use a bait the ants will accept, and seal entry routes. “Sugar ant” is an imprecise common name, so choose a product labeled for the target ant and placement; persistent or inaccessible infestations may need a licensed pest-management professional.

What “sugar ants” means

“Sugar ant” is a broad household term, not a precise species diagnosis. Different small ants may be attracted to sweet foods, grease, pet food, or moisture, and species and current feeding preferences affect whether ants accept a particular bait.

1. Remove food and water attractions

Clean up crumbs, spills, sweet or greasy residue, pet food, and food-container residue. Store food in tightly sealed containers, rinse food containers before discarding them, empty trash regularly, and address leaks or damp areas. Sanitation reduces competing food and makes bait more likely to be found, but it does not by itself eliminate an established colony.

2. Wipe away ant trails

Use a sponge or cloth with soapy water to wipe visible ants and their route, including nearby counters, cabinet edges, windowsills, and baseboards. This removes the scent trail and can reduce recruitment, but it does not reach the nest. Pair trail cleaning with food-source reduction, baiting, and exclusion.

  • KILLS THE QUEEN & THE ENTIRE COLONY: TERRO liquid ant bait contains borax-based formula that attracts worker ants to consume and carry back to the colony, effectively eliminating both visible ants and hidden nest populations for complete indoor ant killer control
  • EFFECTIVE ELIMINATION: Fast-acting ant killer bait reduces ant activity within days as worker ants transport the liquid ant bait back to their colony, providing widespread elimination of entire ant populations with these sugar ant traps indoor
  • EASY TO USE: Ready-to-use ant bait stations require no setup and can be placed along baseboards, corners, countertops, and other high-traffic areas where ants commonly travel for optimal ant trap indoor pest control results
  • LONG-LASTING: Once placed, the bait continues to work for weeks, as long as ants continue to visit the stations. Complete control may take up to 2-4 weeks, depending on the infestation size

3. Place bait ants will accept

Workers can carry bait back toward the nest and share it with other ants, making bait more useful for colony control than simply killing exposed workers. Bait works only when the target ants accept and consume it. Use an enclosed liquid bait station or gel bait whose label covers the target ant and the intended indoor or outdoor location. There is no universally best brand or formulation.

How to choose and use bait

  1. Check the label. Confirm that the product covers the target ant and the location where you plan to use it.
  2. Place it near active foraging. Follow label directions and keep bait away from children, pets, competing food, and water.
  3. Let ants feed. Continued activity at first is not necessarily a sign of failure; workers need time to carry bait back.
  4. Keep sprays away. Insecticide spray near bait can repel ants or contaminate the bait, interfering with feeding.
  5. Reassess if ants ignore it. Check placement, competing food, species, and formulation; reposition or try another labeled formulation if appropriate.

The University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program says it can take 5 to 10 days to see fewer ants. UF/IFAS notes that some baiting programs may need bait available over several weeks. These are not guaranteed timelines; if activity does not decline, reassess the situation or seek professional help.

Raid Ant Killer Baits, For Household Use, Child Resistant, 8 Count
  • Kills ants where they hide for up to 3 months
  • After ants feed on the bait, they return to the colony and transfer the bait to the queen and the others, thereby killing the entire colony
  • Use indoors in corners, along walls and near entry points
  • Child-resistant

4. Find and seal entry routes

Trace trails to gaps around doors, windows, plumbing, utility lines, and baseboards. Seal suitable gaps with caulk and improve damaged weather stripping or screens where practical. Reduce conditions that support foraging or nesting near the building, including plants or mulch close to the foundation. Exclusion supports treatment and can reduce re-entry, but it does not replace baiting when ants are already established indoors.

5. Give treatment time and get help if needed

Allow bait time to work, then check whether activity is declining. If ants continue or return, consider whether the bait is accepted, correctly placed, and suitable for the species, and whether the nest may be outdoors or inaccessible. Contact a licensed pest-control professional for persistent, recurring, unidentified, or inaccessible infestations, especially when moisture or structural problems may be involved.

Keep bait and pesticides away from pets and children

Boric acid bait can cause serious illness if ingested by children or pets. Keep all bait and pesticides inaccessible to them, use products only as labeled, and store them in their original containers. “Natural” or household ingredients are not automatically safe, and homemade pesticide recipes are not a universal substitute for labeled products. If a pet or child may have swallowed bait, contact a veterinarian or appropriate poison service promptly and keep the product container available.

What to remember

  • Clean food residue and correct moisture problems to reduce attractions and competing food.
  • Wipe trails with soapy water, but do not treat trail wiping as colony control.
  • Choose a labeled bait that ants accept; keep sprays away from active bait.
  • Allow time for baiting, then seal entry routes and reassess if activity continues.

FAQ

How do I get rid of sugar ants without just killing the ants I can see?

Remove food and water sources, wipe trails, and place a labeled bait that the ants accept near active foraging. Workers may carry bait back toward the colony; sprays generally kill exposed ants and can interfere with baiting.

How long does ant bait take to work?

What if ants do not eat the bait?

Check that the bait is labeled for the ant and placement, and consider competing food, location, species, and formulation. Reposition it or try another labeled formulation if appropriate. Persistent activity may warrant professional identification.

No. It removes visible ants and their scent trail, but does not reach the nest. Combine trail cleaning with sanitation, appropriate baiting, and exclusion.
