Project RattleCam offers free public livestreams of wild rattlesnakes in Colorado, California, and Pennsylvania, alongside research and community science. The Colorado stream is associated with a site where hundreds of Prairie Rattlesnakes gather, but schedules vary by location and season; check the official project page for current feeds.
What is Project RattleCam?
Project RattleCam is a public livestream and community-science project that lets people observe wild rattlesnakes remotely. Its Colorado site is a den and rookery where hundreds of Prairie Rattlesnakes gather. The project also lists streams featuring Western Rattlesnakes in California and Timber Rattlesnakes in Pennsylvania.
Hundreds of snakes are not visible at every camera or at every moment. The “hundreds” description applies most directly to the Colorado site. Schedules differ by location and season, so check the official project page for current availability.
This is not a staged snake encounter or a webcam pointed at an enclosure. The cameras observe wild animals at communal sites while researchers and viewers look for patterns in behavior. Exact locations are undisclosed to protect the snakes and research sites; do not try to locate them.

Where are the Project RattleCam streams?
| Location | Species | What is distinctive | Operating details |
|---|---|---|---|
| California | Western Rattlesnakes | The original off-grid stream, focused on a relatively small rookery | Daytime-only; no night vision |
| Colorado | Prairie Rattlesnakes | A large den, or hibernaculum, and rookery where hundreds gather | Infrared nighttime monitoring; check the official page for the current schedule |
| Pennsylvania | Timber Rattlesnakes | The project’s first eastern U.S. installation | Announced as a free YouTube stream operating around the clock during its 2026 season; check the official page for current schedule and availability |
The exact locations are not published. That is an important feature, not a missing detail: the project is designed to make observation possible without directing curious visitors toward a vulnerable den or rookery.
What can you see on the rattlesnake livestream?
The most interesting moments are often ordinary ones. Instead of showing snakes being handled or provoked, the cameras provide a long-term view of how rattlesnakes use communal sites. Researchers investigate questions about social interactions, mother-and-young behavior, predators, rainwater drinking, and possible communication; these are research questions, not settled answers.
- Basking: Snakes may position themselves to warm their bodies.
- Movement and social contact: Several snakes may pass, rest, or shift around one another.
- Shedding: A snake may become less active while preparing to shed its skin.
- Responses to weather: Researchers are interested in how rain and changing conditions relate to snake behavior, including possible rainwater drinking.
- Reproduction: Viewers may see newborns or young snakes. In a September 2026 update, Cal Poly reported newborn observations in all three states and more than 60 newborn rattlesnakes observed in Colorado. These are observations from 2026, not a guaranteed annual calendar.
- Nighttime activity: Colorado’s infrared system can reveal activity a daytime camera would miss. California has no night vision; check the official page for Pennsylvania’s current stream schedule.
A quiet or apparently empty view is also normal. Weather, season, light, temperature, camera position, and the snakes’ location within the site all affect what appears on screen. Entwined snakes can be hard to count; the project’s image-classification guidance advises estimating by counting visible heads rather than assuming every individual is easy to distinguish.
Are rattlesnakes communicating by twitching their heads?
One of Project RattleCam’s research interests is a behavior viewers describe as head twitching. The project asks viewers to report possible twitching in chat with a timestamp.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteResearchers are investigating whether this behavior plays a role in communication. It is more accurate to call head twitching an open research question than to describe it as a proven rattlesnake language. A brief movement on a livestream can be difficult to interpret without reviewing the surrounding footage and considering the animal’s posture, nearby snakes, and environmental conditions.
How viewers participate in the research
Project RattleCam turns watching into a form of structured observation. A viewer’s report is not automatically a confirmed scientific finding, but it can help researchers locate footage for later analysis.

The RattleResearchers activity gives participants a more organized way to make observations. Consult the project’s learning pages for current instructions.
4. Classify images through Zooniverse
Project RattleCam also uses image-based community science through Zooniverse. Volunteers classify time-lapse images, helping researchers work through more images than a small research team could reasonably inspect alone.
Community observations can help identify footage for review, but they still need scientific interpretation: a timestamped viewer report is evidence to examine, not a final conclusion about what a snake was doing.
Why livestream rattlesnakes instead of studying them only in the field?
Rattlesnakes are secretive and seasonal, and observing them can risk disturbing them. Occasional field visits may capture only a narrow slice of behavior. Remote cameras can record for longer periods and capture behavior when researchers are not present.

The peer-reviewed study by Bachhuber and colleagues, published in 2025, documents the 2024 Colorado off-grid livestream season, which ran from May 15 through November 5. The researchers reported 13,761 new subscribers, 1,616,398 livestream views from 122 countries, and 175,306 watch hours for that season. These are historical, season-specific metrics, not current audience totals.
The Colorado technical setup includes a high-definition camera with infrared monitoring, waterproof fiberglass housing, a wiper and heated lens, two solar panels, and an LTE router. California’s system has lower resolution, no night vision, and daytime-only operation. These are research installations, not recommendations for viewers to buy comparable equipment.
Can Project RattleCam change how people feel about snakes?
Project RattleCam has a human-dimensions goal as well as a wildlife-research goal. Rattlesnakes are often described with frightening or hostile language even though the animals seen on the streams are generally engaged in normal snake behavior, not pursuing people.
The 2025 study examined a small sample of viewer comments, but it was not designed to measure whether livestreaming changed viewers’ perceptions. Comments may offer anecdotal examples of people responding positively; they are not proof of an overall change in public opinion.

For pet owners, the practical lesson is balanced: rattlesnakes are venomous wild animals that deserve distance and respect, but fear-based descriptions such as “killer den” or “snake invasion” do not explain their ecology. “Mega-den” refers to a large communal overwintering and reproductive site, not a threat to a neighborhood.
RattlEd: a classroom extension
Project RattleCam is used in RattlEd, a curriculum for students in grades 3–5. It uses the livestream to teach observation, study design, data collection, and presentation. Check the project’s learning pages for current curriculum details and availability.

A field guide is optional further reading; the project’s image-classification FAQ directs contributors to its field guide for identification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to watch safely
Watch the snakes online; do not try to find the camera sites. Project RattleCam withholds exact locations for conservation and safety reasons.
- Do not travel to a suspected den or rookery.
- Do not approach, handle, feed, harass, or attempt to photograph a wild rattlesnake at close range.
- Keep children and pets away from snakes and supervise outdoor activity in areas where rattlesnakes occur.
- Use a leash and stay on maintained paths where local guidance recommends it.
- If a rattlesnake is near a home, kennel, yard, or other occupied area, move people and pets indoors and contact qualified local wildlife or snake-relocation professionals.
Rattlesnakes are venomous, not poisonous. “Venomous” means they can deliver toxins through a bite; “poisonous” generally refers to harm caused when a substance is eaten, inhaled, or absorbed. The correct response to a close encounter is distance and professional help.
