Standard length excludes the tail fin, so these figures are not directly interchangeable with total length.
The name refers to telescopefish’s tubular eyes, not to a giant body. The reported numbers are maximum sizes, not average lengths.
How large is each telescopefish species?

Thomas L. Jackson’s NOAA-hosted family account gives those species-specific maximum observed standard lengths. Separately, Smithsonian Ocean says neither species grows longer than 26 cm, and FishBase lists a maximum length of 26.0 cm total length for G. indica. Because total length includes the caudal fin and standard length does not, these values describe different measurement conventions.
The concise answer is that telescopefish are no longer than about 26 cm according to Smithsonian Ocean, while the NOAA-hosted account’s observed standard-length maxima are 17.7 cm for G. chuni and 22.3 cm for G. indica.

Why the measurements are not perfectly comparable
Fish researchers use more than one way to measure a fish:
- Standard length (SL) runs from the tip of the snout to the base of the tail fin. It leaves out the caudal fin.
- Total length (TL) runs from the tip of the snout to the farthest end of the tail fin. It includes the caudal fin.
The NOAA-hosted account reports standard lengths, while FishBase’s 26.0 cm figure for G. indica is total length. Smithsonian Ocean’s group-level 26 cm summary does not specify a measurement convention in the cited passage. Treat the figures as sourced size descriptions, not as a precise head-to-tail comparison.

What is a telescopefish?
“Telescopefish” is the common name for fish in the family Giganturidae. The family contains one genus, Gigantura, and two species:
- Gigantura chuni
- Gigantura indica
Smithsonian Ocean describes the adults as elongated, with tubular eyes, ribbon-like tails, silvery coloration, and no scales. The name comes from their remarkable tubular eyes, not an unusually large body.

Where do telescopefish live?
Smithsonian Ocean and the FAO describe telescopefish as occurring in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. FishBase reports a depth range of 17–2,100 m for G. indica; that is a reported range for that species, not a universal depth limit for every telescopefish.
The Australian Museum reports that both species occur in Australian waters. Telescopefish are deep-sea fish, and the available source material does not establish a dependable estimate of their global abundance.

Do telescopefish look different as babies?
Yes. The NOAA-hosted family account notes that telescopefish larvae look very different from the transformed adults. A larval image should not be assumed to show the adult body form.
