Promachocrinus fragarius, commonly called the Antarctic strawberry feather star, is a feather star described as a new species in a 2023 taxonomic revision. A 2025 review reports that it has 20 arms and a central body structure with a strawberry-like outline. The comparison refers to that central structure, not to the whole animal.
Why is it called the Antarctic strawberry feather star?
The name refers to the shape of the animal’s central body structure, called the centrodorsal. A 2025 review describes it as rounded-conical, widening slightly before curving back to a rounded tip—a shape it compares to a strawberry.
Does it really have 20 arms?
Yes. The 2025 genus review diagnoses P. fragarius with 20 arms. This is a species-specific count reported by that review.
What kind of animal is it?
Promachocrinus fragarius is a feather star in the genus Promachocrinus. Its common name is the Antarctic strawberry feather star.

How did scientists identify the species?
McLaughlin, Wilson, and Rouse published a taxonomic revision in Invertebrate Systematics in 2023. The work combined mitochondrial DNA sequencing, additional genetic evidence for some representatives, and reassessment of physical characteristics.
The revision recognized eight species in the Promachocrinus complex, including four previously unnamed species described as new. P. fragarius was one of them. The authors noted that some members of the group cannot be reliably distinguished by morphology alone, so DNA evidence matters for identifying those species.

What the research establishes—and what it does not
- Established: P. fragarius was formally described in the 2023 revision.
- Established: The 2025 genus review reports 20 arms and a strawberry-like centrodorsal.
- Important qualification: The 2023 revision recognized eight species in the complex and described four previously unnamed species as new.
- Not established here: A complete species-specific distribution, depth range, abundance, or specimen measurements.
Why does the revision matter?
The revision shows how a group of similar-looking feather stars previously treated under one broad species name could include several distinct species. The research combined genetic evidence with anatomical reassessment, and its authors cautioned that appearance alone is not enough to distinguish every member of the group.
