The Burmese is a compact, muscular, short-coated cat known for being people-oriented, playful, and fond of company. Its coat is relatively easy to maintain with weekly brushing, but its social nature makes daily interaction and plans for time spent alone important considerations.

Burmese cats can suit a range of households, including homes with children or other pets, when individual temperaments and introductions are handled thoughtfully. Breed tendencies are not guarantees, so consider the particular cat’s needs and health history.

Burmese cat at a glance

Characteristic What to expect
Breed type Medium-sized, muscular, short-coated companion cat
Temperament Often people-oriented, social, playful, and interactive
Activity and enrichment Enjoys play, games, and interactive toys
Grooming Weekly brushing is generally recommended
Social needs May become lonely when left alone for long periods
Health questions Ask about HCM screening; health considerations can vary by lineage and registry

Appearance, color descriptions, and breed standards vary by registry. A breed profile can help you plan, but it does not replace veterinary advice or review of an individual cat’s health records.

Is a Burmese the right cat for you?

A Burmese may suit you if you want an involved companion and enjoy regular play, attention, and company. Many are described as following people around and seeking laps, but individual personalities differ.

Hzuaneri Cat Litter Box Enclosure, Hidden Litter Box Cabinet Furniture
  • More Privacy and Less Odor: This cat restroom provides your cat with a hidden and relaxing toilet space without the odor and litter, and you can reduce the unpleasant mess
  • Separate Corridor Design: It makes the entry route for cats curved, which not only greatly improves the privacy of cats, but also prevents dogs from intruding
  • The Perfect Blend of Family: This rustic style and unique barn door shaped litter box cabinet can be used as a cat litter box or as a finished cat house, giving your cat a comfortable home
  • Rich Features: Carpet inside the litter box to prevent litter from flying around; cat scratching ball with bell to keep cats playing happily; sturdy latch that won't open awkwardly on its own
  • More Stable: This litter box enclosure has 4 adjustable feet at the bottom to solve the problem of uneven ground causing the front door to tilt

Consider another fit if you want a highly independent cat or your household is away for long periods without a companionship and enrichment plan. TICA notes that Burmese may become lonely when left alone for extended periods; a second cat may be worth considering, but it is not a guaranteed solution.

  • Potentially good fit: A household able to provide regular interaction, play, and a safe environment.
  • With other pets: Possible when temperaments are compatible and introductions are gradual.
  • More challenging fit: A home seeking a low-interaction pet or routinely leaving a cat alone for long stretches.

History and breed identity

The modern Burmese is commonly traced to Wong Mau, brought to the United States in 1930 and bred with a Siamese. TICA says the resulting dark-brown offspring founded the breed; CFA says it began registering early Burmese in 1936 and granted championship status in 1959. These are milestones reported by the respective associations.

American Burmese and European Burmese descriptions have developed along different paths. When comparing a cat with a show standard, check which registry and variety are being discussed.

American Burmese and European Burmese

Comparison Burmese European Burmese
Body type in CFA descriptions Compact and cobby More moderate
CFA color list Sable, champagne, blue, and platinum Ten-color palette
Other registry descriptions TICA describes a broader set of solid and tortoiseshell colors Standards and descriptions depend on registry
Health discussion TICA identifies HCM as a health concern to discuss with breeders CFA identifies hypokalaemic myopathy as a heritable concern detectable by genetic testing

Color and type descriptions are registry-specific, not universal. Ask a breeder which registry and variety applies and request relevant health records. A pet-quality cat can be a wonderful companion without matching a show ideal.

Appearance and physical characteristics

TICA and CFA describe the Burmese as medium-sized and strongly muscled, with substantial bone, a rounded head, expressive eyes, and a short, close-lying, glossy or silky coat. CFA describes gold eyes. The exact appearance varies between cats and registry standards.

CFA says Burmese reach full growth at about 18 months and that a mature male may reach or exceed 12 pounds, with females usually smaller. These are CFA’s breed-profile descriptions, not a target weight for every cat. Ask a veterinarian to assess an individual cat’s body condition.

Personality: affectionate, clever, and involved

TICA describes Burmese as outgoing, people-oriented, playful, and social; CFA says they tend to follow people and seek laps and attention. Many enjoy interactive games and toys, but no breed description can predict every cat’s personality.

Offer opportunities for play and interaction, including games and puzzle or interactive toys. A cat’s voice and sociability vary; notice changes in behavior and discuss concerns with a veterinarian rather than assuming they are simply breed traits.

Children, dogs, and other cats

TICA describes Burmese as potentially suitable for households with children and other pets. That does not mean every cat will suit every household. Supervise interactions and let each animal adjust at its own pace.

  1. Give the new cat a separate starting room with food, water, litter, hiding places, and scratching facilities.
  2. Allow the animals to become familiar with one another’s scent before direct contact.
  3. Use short, calm, supervised meetings and provide escape routes or elevated areas.
  4. Do not force contact or leave a new cat unsupervised with a dog or young child until behavior is consistently safe.

A second pet may provide company in some homes, but compatibility, introductions, and continued human interaction still matter.

Exercise and enrichment needs

Offer regular opportunities for play and interaction. Games and interactive toys can help provide stimulation for a playful, intelligent cat.

A practical indoor setup can include:

  • Interactive games and supervised play
  • Puzzle or interactive toys
  • A stable scratching post
  • Safe places to climb and rest

Introduce new toys at a suitable level and check them for damage. Indoor living can work well for a Burmese; if outdoor access is offered, consider a secure enclosure or supervised access rather than unrestricted roaming.

Grooming and routine care

TICA and CFA recommend weekly brushing with a rubber brush to remove loose hair and help maintain the coat’s gloss. CFA says regular bathing is unnecessary. Brushing does not eliminate shedding or replace veterinary care.

Routine care also includes nail trimming, ear cleaning as needed, and tooth brushing with veterinarian-approved pet toothpaste. Provide fresh water, good nutrition, exercise, and a scratching post. Ask a veterinarian for advice tailored to the cat.

Feeding and weight management

Provide a nutritionally complete diet appropriate to the cat’s life stage and needs. Measure portions and monitor body condition; ask a veterinarian for help choosing an appropriate amount and diet. Keep fresh water available.

CFA notes that some sources suggest a possible diabetes predisposition in older Burmese, while heritability research is inconclusive. Do not treat this as a certainty for an individual cat. Discuss changes in appetite, thirst, weight, or urination with a veterinarian.

Health priorities for Burmese cats

Breed information can help guide questions to breeders and veterinarians, but it cannot predict an individual cat’s health. Health concerns and testing discussions may differ by lineage and registry.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

TICA identifies hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) as a health concern for Burmese. It recommends breeder screening with echocardiography performed by a veterinary cardiologist and notes that HCM may not appear in the first years of life. Ask breeders about the parents’ screening records and discuss an individual cat’s care with a veterinarian. A screening history is useful information, not a guarantee of future health.

Hypokalaemic myopathy

CFA’s European Burmese profile identifies hypokalaemic myopathy as a heritable concern detectable by genetic testing. Keep this distinction clear: the research does not establish that this condition or a particular testing requirement applies universally to every Burmese. If you are considering a European Burmese, ask the breeder whether relevant genetic testing has been done and request the records. A veterinarian can advise on an individual cat’s symptoms or testing needs.

Diabetes and other health questions

CFA says some sources suggest a possible diabetes predisposition in older Burmese, but also says heritability research is inconclusive. Avoid treating the concern as certain or quantified. CFA also reports that feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) cases were historically above average in Burmese, but that careful selective breeding has reduced incidence so it now occurs no more often than in other breeds. These association descriptions are not a prediction for an individual cat.

Keep up with routine veterinary care and seek advice about changes in appetite, thirst, weight, activity, breathing, or general behavior. Do not try to diagnose or treat a cat based on breed information alone.

A simple Burmese care routine

Routine Useful tasks
Daily Provide fresh water, suitable meals, litter care, interaction, and opportunities for play
Weekly Brush the coat and check whether nails need attention
Regularly Maintain dental care, scratching facilities, and veterinary care appropriate to the cat
Before purchase or adoption Review health records, ask about relevant screening, and discuss lineage and registry

How to choose a Burmese kitten or adult

Ask for available veterinary records, vaccination information, identification, socialization details, and written contract terms. Clarify which registry and variety the breeder represents. TICA lists member breeders who have signed its Code of Ethics; CFA offers a Find-A-Breeder resource and suggests visiting a cat show. These are starting points, not guarantees of an individual breeder’s practices.

For a Burmese, ask:

  • What health screening has been performed on the breeding cats, and can I review the records?
  • For European Burmese, has relevant hypokalaemic myopathy testing been discussed or performed?
  • What cardiac screening has been performed, and who performed it?
  • Is there a known family history of significant illness?
  • How was the cat socialized, and what support is available after placement?

Meet the cat when possible and observe its movement, breathing, alertness, and response to handling. If adopting from a rescue, ask for available medical and behavioral information and allow the cat time to settle.

Frequently overlooked Burmese care details

  • Time alone matters: TICA says Burmese may become lonely when left alone for long periods.
  • Standards differ: Body type and color descriptions vary by registry and variety.
  • Health guidance is not a guarantee: Screening can inform decisions but cannot promise an individual cat’s future health.
  • A companion is not an automatic fix: Another animal may help in some homes, but compatibility and introductions matter.

Do Burmese cats need another cat?

Not necessarily. TICA notes that Burmese may become lonely when left alone for long periods, so consider your schedule and companionship plan. A second cat is not a guaranteed solution; compatibility and introductions matter.

How often does a Burmese need grooming?

TICA and CFA recommend weekly brushing with a rubber brush. CFA says regular bathing is unnecessary.

What health screening should I ask a Burmese breeder about?

Ask about cardiac screening for HCM; TICA recommends echocardiography performed by a veterinary cardiologist. For European Burmese, ask about the hypokalaemic myopathy concern and relevant genetic testing. Request records and confirm which lineage and registry apply.

Can a Burmese live indoors?

Yes. Provide interaction, play, scratching facilities, and safe places to rest and climb. If offering outdoor access, consider a secure enclosure or supervised access.

The Bottom Line

The Burmese is a short-coated, muscular cat often described as social and people-oriented. Weekly brushing is a straightforward part of care, while company and interaction deserve particular consideration. Ask about health screening relevant to the cat’s lineage, review records, and consult a veterinarian about individual needs.
