Can cats eat onions? No—onions are unsafe for cats in raw, cooked, dehydrated, powdered, granulated, and soup-mix forms. Onion can damage feline red blood cells and cause life-threatening anemia, and signs may be delayed for several days. Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly after suspected ingestion.

Onion is not a safe treat or flavoring for cats. A cat may encounter it in leftovers, gravy, broth, seasoning blends, baby food, or a dry soup mix, so the ingredient list matters even when no visible onion pieces remain.

Key takeaways

  • Onions are unsafe for cats in raw, cooked, dehydrated, powdered, granulated, salted, and soup-mix forms.
  • Onion toxicity can damage a cat’s red blood cells and cause Heinz-body hemolytic anemia, with serious signs sometimes delayed for several days.
  • Merck Veterinary Manual reports toxicosis in cats after less than a teaspoon of cooked onion and after 5 g/kg of raw onion, but neither figure is a safe-dose threshold.
  • Garlic is 3–5 times more toxic than onion, according to Merck Veterinary Manual, and garlic powder, chives, leeks, scallions, and shallots are also concerns.
  • After a suspected exposure, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly; do not give hydrogen peroxide or induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional specifically tells you to.

What happens if a cat eats onion?

Onion can cause Allium toxicosis, a poisoning syndrome that can injure red blood cells. The sulfur-containing oxidants in onion can produce Heinz bodies, methemoglobinemia, and red-blood-cell destruction called hemolysis. Hemolytic anemia can reduce the blood’s ability to carry oxygen and may become life-threatening.

Cats are especially susceptible. Merck Veterinary Manual states, “Cats are the most susceptible species, followed by dogs.” The toxic compounds can be released when onion is chopped, chewed, or cooked, and gastrointestinal microbes can further act on the plant material.

Cooking does not make onion safe for cats. Raw onion, sautéed onion, baked onion, dried flakes, onion powder, onion salt, and dry onion-soup mix can all be dangerous. Concentrated seasonings may deliver more onion material in a small-looking amount than fresh onion.

Are cooked onions toxic to cats?

Yes. Cooked onions remain potentially toxic to cats, including onions used in sauces, gravies, broths, soups, casseroles, baby foods, leftovers, and table scraps. “Cooked” describes the preparation; it does not remove the risk of Allium toxicosis.

Exposure form Examples Risk consideration
Fresh onion Raw, chopped, sliced, or diced onion Potentially toxic; amount and cat body weight matter.
Cooked onion Sautéed, baked, fried, or boiled onion Still potentially toxic after cooking.
Dehydrated onion Dried flakes or pieces More concentrated than an equivalent-looking volume of fresh onion.
Powder or salt Onion powder, onion salt, seasoning blends Concentrated exposure can be easy to overlook.
Prepared food Soup mix, sauce, gravy, broth, baby food, or leftovers Check the ingredient list for onion, garlic, and related plants.

How much onion is toxic to a cat?

There is no universally safe onion amount that owners can reliably calculate at home. Dose depends on the cat’s body weight, the onion’s form and concentration, the amount eaten, the time since ingestion, and individual health factors.

According to the Merck Veterinary Manual (2024), toxicosis has been reported in cats after less than a teaspoon of cooked onion and after 5 g/kg of raw onion. These are published exposure observations, not guaranteed toxic thresholds or permission to wait below those amounts. A small cat, a concentrated product, or an uncertain serving makes internet dose calculations particularly unreliable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that a tiny amount is harmless, but do not assume that every trace exposure will cause illness either. If a real exposure occurred, provide the product details and estimated amount to a veterinarian or animal poison-control service rather than trying to convert a published case into a safe-dose calculator.

Are garlic and onion powder dangerous for cats?

Yes. Garlic and garlic powder are dangerous for cats, and garlic is more toxic than onion. Merck Veterinary Manual states, “Garlic is 3–5 times more toxic than onion.” Chives, leeks, scallions, and shallots are also Allium plants that should be treated as potential poisoning risks.

Pet Poison Helpline specifically warns about concentrated onion and garlic powders or salts. Keep these ingredients away from cats, including when they are mixed into seasoning packets, meat rubs, instant soups, sauces, gravies, and human snack foods.

Ingredient Should a cat eat it? Where it may be hidden
Onion No Fresh produce, cooked dishes, sauces, soups, and leftovers
Onion powder or salt No Seasoning blends, soup mixes, gravies, and packaged foods
Garlic or garlic powder No Meat dishes, broths, sauces, supplements, and seasonings
Chives, leeks, scallions, or shallots No Garnishes, recipes, salads, stocks, and prepared foods

What are the signs of onion poisoning in cats?

Signs can begin with gastrointestinal irritation and later progress to red-blood-cell injury. A cat may initially appear normal even while toxic changes are developing.

  • Weakness, lethargy, or reduced activity
  • Pale, white, or yellow gums
  • Rapid breathing or a rapid heart rate
  • Exercise intolerance or marked tiredness
  • Dark, red, or bloody urine
  • Jaundice, collapse, or death in severe cases

The ASPCA’s onion toxicity guidance and veterinary references describe gastrointestinal and anemia-related signs, including weakness, pale gums, rapid breathing, dark urine, and collapse. A cat with breathing difficulty, pale or yellow gums, dark urine, collapse, repeated vomiting, or a sudden major behavior change needs emergency veterinary care.

How long after eating onion will a cat get sick?

Onion-poisoning signs can be delayed for several days, so a cat that looks normal immediately after eating onion may not be out of danger. Merck Veterinary Manual reports that Heinz bodies and methemoglobin can increase within 24 hours, while clinical anemia may take several days to become apparent; hemolysis commonly occurs three to five days after exposure, although timing varies.

My cat ate onion—should I call the vet?

Yes. Contact your cat’s veterinarian, an emergency veterinary hospital, or an animal poison-control service promptly after a suspected onion, garlic, chive, leek, scallion, shallot, onion-powder, or garlic-powder exposure. Early advice may allow options that are no longer appropriate after symptoms develop.

What information should you provide?

  • Your cat’s current weight, age, and relevant health conditions
  • The exact food, ingredient, seasoning, or plant involved
  • The estimated amount eaten and whether the amount is uncertain
  • Whether the ingredient was fresh, cooked, dehydrated, powdered, salted, or concentrated

Remove the food and prevent further access. Keep the packaging, recipe, ingredient label, or remaining sample for the veterinarian. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s toxin guidance can help owners identify the information professionals may need, but a source page cannot replace individualized triage.

Can I make my cat vomit after eating onions?

No. Do not make a cat vomit at home unless a veterinary professional specifically instructs you to do so. Cornell Feline Health Center states, “Importantly do not try to induce the animal to vomit unless specifically instructed to do so.” Cats should not be given hydrogen peroxide as a home emetic.

Pet Poison Helpline warns that hydrogen peroxide can injure a cat’s stomach and potentially cause fatal bleeding. Do not substitute salt, oil, milk, butter, human medicine, supplements, or a “detox” product. The benefit of activated charcoal for Allium exposure is uncertain, so activated charcoal should not be treated as an automatic home remedy.

How do veterinarians diagnose and treat onion toxicity?

A veterinarian evaluates the exposure history and symptoms and may use a physical examination, complete blood count, blood-smear examination, urine assessment, and repeat monitoring to look for Heinz-body hemolytic anemia and related complications.

Treatment is individualized according to the product, amount, timing, symptoms, and laboratory findings. Possible veterinary care includes professionally supervised gastrointestinal decontamination when appropriate, intravenous fluids to help protect the kidneys, oxygen supplementation, blood transfusion for life-threatening anemia, and other supportive treatment. Owners should not use home doses of emetics, activated charcoal, antioxidants, or other medications.

Merck Veterinary Manual’s clinical reference explains why monitoring can be necessary even when a cat initially seems well. Treatment is time-sensitive, but the correct intervention cannot be selected safely from the ingredient name alone.

Keep food packaging available because the exact ingredients and concentration can affect triage.
